well a french horn isnt "really" a brass but more categorize it like a woodwind, because of his more "soloistic" sound and versatility. Compared to other brass instruments, it can be more close to any woodwind's sound than other and it adds color to the ensemble, so yeah

French horn is brass but it, like all other brass and woodwind instruments, is in the family of wind instruments which means an instrument that uses wind throughout the instrument to make noise. It is in a wind quintet also, not a woodwind quintet, those are different things. If there was a brass instrument in a woodwind quintet then things would be incorrect

@@fredericbeaudoin6850 hi there, i don't wanna get to into a petty youtube argument, just say what i was taught: instruments are classified based on how the sound is produced. The horn player buzzes their lips on the mouthpiece, creating a sound the same way other brass instruments create sound. This is a little looser for woodwinds, especially for the flute, but it at least makes sense for brass.

From what I know, it bridges a range gap between clarinet and bassoon. Woodwind quintets have existed before the saxophone was invented so, horn was the only thing at the time able to fill that gap. It also has a timbre that fits the sound of the ensemble so after the invention of the sax, people just kind of left it as is.

It's an early piece, before he developed his characteristic style. Also, it's originally for piano four-hands, then an orchestral arrangement (not be Debussy, but in a suitable style). Very hard to effectively arrange it for just five winds.
