New for 2018
The F-Type gained a new base 2.0-liter turbocharged engine for the coupe’s mid-cycle refresh and a limited-edition 400 Sport model featuring a 400-hp supercharged V-6 engine. The refresh adds new front fascia with redesigned headlights, new paint and wheel options, new lightweight slimline seats, ventilated seats are now available, and two new interior color options include noble chrome and Sienna Tan. New driver assist safety features have also added to the F-Type lineup.
Vehicle Summary
The F-Type is Jaguar’s only two-door car and convertible, and also the sportiest and quickest vehicle in the British automaker’s lineup. The F-Type starts below the flagship XJ but can be optioned to be the most expensive vehicle in Jaguar’s lineup.

The Jaguar InControl Touch Pro infotainment system is now standard and features a faster processor. New for the infotainment system is a GoPro connectivity feature dubbed ReRun, an app that can record track data including speed, lateral acceleration, gear selection, and throttle and brake position. The data can then be overlaid with GoPro footage and downloaded on a smartphone. For added look and bite, you can opt the SVR model with the available Carbon Ceramic Brake package that will likely return for 2018 and includes yellow brake calipers and 20-inch Maelstrom five twin-spoke forged alloy wheels. The Extended Leather package adds a leather upper dash trim and leather sports sun visor with mirror while the Exterior Carbon Fiber package adds carbon fiber hood louvers, mirror caps, front splitter, and side vents.
Safety
Jaguar improved the safety on the 2018 F-Type by offering Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, and Driver Condition Monitor that can sense driver fatigue. Also new is Adaptive Speed Limiter, the feature uses Traffic Sign Recognition to determine if the speed limit has changed and automatically speeds up or slows down the F-Type until the vehicle reaches the new speed limit. Safety features from 2017 should carry over and include blind-spot monitoring, Forward Collision Warning, and parking sensors.
What We Think
In Motor Trend’s 2016 Best Driver’s Car competition, we felt the 2017 F-Type SVR was the most capable F-Type ever with the new all-wheel-drive system and improved chassis: “A really satisfying car to drive on corner entry; power doesn’t seem to change the car’s balance a lot. It’s like I’m carving the friction circle.”
The Jag impressed us by still feeling like a rear-wheel drive car: “Its steering remains fluid, linear, and marvelously uncorrupted by torque inputs into the front wheels.” However, the eight-speed automatic lagged behind the rest: “The biggest letdown is the eight-speed automatic, which in both auto and manual modes always feels a beat behind the rest of the car. Feels unsophisticated compared with the other automatics here.”
In the end, the F-Type finished in ninth place out of 12 cars driven on the track and on public roads.
In a First Test review of the 2016 Jaguar F-Type R, the coupe’s new all-wheel-drive system improved performance by allowing the Jag to perform better in acceleration runs and in our figure-8 handling course. “While I do miss the ability to do monstrous, adolescent burnouts at the drop of a foot, the 2016 F-Type R Coupe is more fun to drive on a winding road than the car it replaces. That’s what confidence-and traction-does for you.”
Cool Fact
Jaguar’s 3.0-liter supercharged V-6’s horsepower output ranges from 340 hp to 400 hp but the torque output only ranges from 332 lb-ft of torque to 339 lb-ft
