CAIAPHAS:
We've been sitting on the fence for far too long.
ANNAS:
Why let him upset us?
Caiaphas, let him be.
All those imbeciles will see,
He really doesn't matter.
CAIAPHAS:
Jesus is important,
We've let him go his way before.
And while he starts a major war,
We theorize and chatter.
ANNAS:
He's just another scripture thumping hack from Galilee.
CAIAPHAS:
The difference is they call him King,
The difference frightens me!
What about the Romans?
When they see King Jesus crowned,
Do you think they'll stand around,
Cheering, and applauding?
What about our people?
If they see we've lost our nerve,
Don't you think that they deserve,
Something more rewarding.
ANNAS:
They've got what they want,
They think so, anyway.
If he's what they want,
Why take their toy away?
He's a craze!
CAIAPHAS:
Put yourself in my place,
I can hardly step aside.
Cannot let my hands be tied.
I am law and order.
What about our priesthood?
Don't you see that we could fall?
If we are to last at all,
We cannot be divided.
ANNAS:
Then say so to the council,
But don't rely on subtlety.
Frighten them, or they won't see.
CAIAPHAS:
Then we are decided?
ANNAS:
Then we are decided.

This is my favorite Caiphas/Annas. Annas has that light, ghostly voice, while Caiphas is dirty, gritty, and deep. You can’t beat that.

Interesting point, Annas is willing to let Jesus go until Caiphas says he threatens their priesthood...then he is all in on his death.

I love this duet so much. So simple and yet says so much about what's going on behind the scenes and those conspiring against Jesus. Always hoped they'd put it into a production at some point.

If they did this like they insist on doing musical films nowadays with "names" - I could almost see Caiaphas being Christopher Lee. Another epic bass.

This really puts things into another perspective. In reality Annas was Caiaphas’ father in law and was apparently quite instrumental in the case against Jesus while Caiaphas was a little more open to ignoring him. I hate that this song isn’t performed in the stage musical, it’s one of my faves for adding to the plot. Plus JCSS is a really short musical, anything to add a few more mins.
@catkeena

FinleyMcB the other thing that I’ve always hated with JCSS is the way that it ends. To me it always gives the impression that Jesus’s death is the end of the story.

Okay so like, this is probably one of the most important songs in the movie for me, and one of those elements that pushes the characterization of the movie over the edge, in this case for the Faracies...or however you spell it. Regardless, in most other versions, they cut straight to "This Jesus Must Die," and tbh...it comes off as a little anti-semetic? At least I always felt it got a bit too close to that for my liking in most versions. But not this one. And it's because of this song. Here, we get to see Kaiafas's thought process, and we learn that it's not ALL just "bleh we're gonna lose our poweeeeeer." It's more than that. Jesus, by all accounts, is pretty anti-authority, and has been getting people to think along those same lines. Problem is, you know...the Romans are an occupying force. Here we see that Kaiafas at least is genuinely worried how the Roman's will react to Jesus, to the comotion he's causing, when they're already on such shakey ground with them. It's a survival instinct. Beyond that, like obviously they're afraid of losing power, but frankly they don't have much to begin with under the Romans. Rather, I take it as they're afraid of losing what is essentially they're whole way of life and their people. They're not perfect, but this song makes them more understandable, and that does the rest of the show wonders imo.

probably neither caiaphas nor hannas were pharisees, but sadducees. pharisees were a inner-judaistic sect focussing on the 'ordinary people', which esp. was important in the provinces like galilee (pretty much like jesus - allegedly), while the sadducees were the 'ruling class' (of course under roman thumb) of religious leaders in jerusalem - and within the hebraic people they had a lot of power (and lots to loose - as would become obvious when the romans destroyed jerusalem incl. the temple). basically the sanhedrin (high court dominated by sadducees) had more or less the same power as king herod in the north - *but* in the capitol *and* holy city of jerusalem (the city where most of the devoted jews went to at least once per year for several days). unlike the pharisees (and allegedly jesus) the sadducees didn't believe in an afterlife, only accepted the torah as holy book (not the other scriptures of the old testament), often didn't believe in other supernatural entities like demons/satan and tried to focus on the duties in the temple while more or less ignoring the 'more dialogical debates' of the 'peasants in the synagogues'. almost all remaining strains of judaism *and* christianity today are based on the pharisee believes - condeming the elitist (and temple-focussed) sadducee ideas. or to go out on a limb: _jesus_ (if he ever existed in a way more or less fitting the gospel's narrative) _was a pharisee_ - maybe less strict in some practical regards, but still believing in the religious basics of the pharisees (believed in an afterlife as well as satan/demons, accepted old testament prophets like isaiah as holy books, visited synagogues ...). the very fact the gospels mention pharisees so often (compared to sadducees) as jesus' counterparts in debates is a sign _how close_ they were ideologically (most debates are about very minor details of religious opinions), whereas debating sadducees often wasn't worth the effort, since their believes just differed way too much (and jesus allegedly spent most of his time outside of jerusalem, where sadducees were quite rare). and debating religious questions was by no means seen as something negative in the pharisee tradition (and still isn't in some judaistic schools of thought today), but as an essential part of the religion itself.

@@montanus777 Y, además, Jesús, según los evangelios canónicos, tiene algún allegado conocido entre los fariseos. En efecto, Jesús discute con los fariseos y los critica porque tiene cercanía con ellos.

There is no evidence, less than no evidence that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. There is plenty of evidence to indicate that she was a woman of means. She may have been eccentric, but not a lady of the evening. As a person who has been through nearly as much religious training as those who have been ordained I really despise this inaccurate depiction of one of Christ's most loyal disciples. Jesus had way more than 12 disciples and many of them were women. This is of course the action of those attempting to discredit Christianity.

I love this musical and yet I also can’t help but dislike it slightly. There are a few things that have always bothered me. To me it hints that Jesus and Mary Magdalene had a relationship beyond that of teacher and follower. Also, I’ve always hated the part where Jesus gets angry and starts screaming at God to watch him die. One of the other things I tend to knit pick about is when they are singing the Superstar song. Judas is singing it but he’s already supposed to have died. Why do they ask Jesus who he thinks is like him? Why did they mention Buddha and Mohammed? They hadn’t even been born at that point in time. The only other problem that I tend to have trouble with is the ending of the play. I don’t know why but it always seemed to me as if they ended the play with Jesus’s death as if that was the end of story and it’s not. It’s as if the Easter Sunday portion of the story (the most important part of the Easter story) doesn’t exist. I don’t understand that.

I think you did understand nothing at all. The great strength of this musical is Jesus and Judas as human beings instead of being god and evil.
@Winnablegaming
@Winnablegaming Год назад
I think you were wanting/expecting this to be the story of Jesus being the song of God and his deaths and resurrection, but that’s not the story the writer wanted to tell. It’s really supposed to be about his death and the fact that it ends with his death and doesn’t continue to his resurrection is supposed to be sad and surprising, just as it was in real life when it happened. That’s how I’ve always understood it.

Jesus is constantly pissy and sour in this. Not very likable. Kinda makes it a relief when he gets flogged.
