C.R.A.P.: Mackinac Bridge Cable Light Change

Walking up the cable to change out a bulb is business as usual for a Mackinac Bridge worker. But for a fake TV host, it was a big deal. In 2007, a lot of viewers got a better appreciation for what it takes to keep upper and lower Michigan connected.
And I got the rare opportunity to crap my pants on international television.
And speaking of, in this week's CRAP, you can have a talisman from that particular day.

The harness has a fall arrest device attached to the D-Ring at the back. If you were to fall it lets out another 6 to 8 feet of cable as it slows your fall speed so the sudden stop does not injure or kill you. Mountain climbers INVENTED a lot of the safety gear that we use on our jobs. So anybody who looks at them guys climbing cliffs and mountains and ask why would somebody do something that crazy---I say THANKS guys for saving a lot of lives.

Mike that had to be one of the more exhilarating job experiences you've had. It would seem overwhelming to the mind and body, but it's intestinal fortitude and willingness of one's own mind to overcome and conquer a perceived impossibly. Good job Mike!

I just watched this episode. Ive seen it many years ago but still wanted to watch it. I was having ANXIETY when they climbed up change the light bulb and wnen they climbed down in the tower to paint the inside.B-day 1961 and grew up in the UP and have lived in Michigan all my life. I grew up a yooper and in the mid 80s went to the Detroit area to work. I have some relatives in that area. I always referred to myself as a transplanted Yooper. I just moved back to the central UP after 30+ years. Ive crossed the bridge i don't know how many times. Riding with somebody else or driving myself. My late brother-in-law from Detroit area was dating my sister during the time the bridge was being built. He drove up every week or two weeks. He of course took the ferry across while the bridge wss under constuction. If he had taken pictures, you probably could've lined them up and saw the bridge taking shape. He wasn't too...?sentimental about that kind of thing. I've started 'claiming' the bridge as mine. The part i dont like about driving on the bridge is when it's rainy and you have to drive on the grates in the middle. It's greasy(i think it is) and feels like my car's gonna slip and slide and fly off the bridge 😱 Do i love this bridge? YES. Do i want to do painting/maintenance on it? NOOOO ! That's for someone else braver than i am😊
@theresemalmberg955

You're not the only one who thinks the grates feel greasy. Even on a dry day they feel greasy to me. Don't like driving on them.

I'm very proud of Mike for doing this. I've been over this bridge at least a dozen times, maybe more, when I used to live in the area. I watched one episode where he was painting it. If you look up the stats you'll find that the Mackinac bridge is longer and heavier than the Golden Gate. The inside lanes in both directions are steel grate, and make a humming sound when you drive on them. If you live on the north side of this bridge, your known as, and called a "Yooper". Thanks.

Damn! The clip cut before the best part! Mike: "I suppose we'll have to climb down the cable now." Worker: "Well, we could, or we could just take the elevator over there", and points to the elevator only a few feet away. It's priceless. (Quotes are approximate)

In 1983 I was working at WIDG/WMKC, the radio stations in St Ignace at the north end of the bridge. Every year they shut down two lanes of the bridge on Labor Day and people can walk the bridge from St Ignace to Mackinaw City. The Bridge Authority called the radio station and asked if we’d like to broadcast from the bridge during the bridge walk. We said, “Sure. Where do we set up?” They said, How about the South Tower?” “On TOP of the tower?” “Yes.” So we get taken to the south tower and take that elevator up to the top and you end up popping out a porthole in the top. You can’t describe the view from up there. It was so windy we had to huddle over the mic so we could be heard and our trusty old Marti wireless unit worked like a charm. I’d go back up there in a minute…using the elevator, again, though. The day they recorded this I was crossing the bridge with my friend as we rode up to do our weekly prison ministry at the prisons 35 miles north of the bridge. We couldn’t figure out why they had half the bridge blocked off and a helicopter was circling around. Once this hit the air, then we knew what had happened.

Biggest bridge in the USA and was once biggest in the world. Far bigger than the Golden Gate Bridge. Many people out west don’t know about the Michigan Mighty MAC Mackinaw bridge. In fact, it is a whopping 5 miles longer than the golden gate and tall like skyscrapers. The bridge is even on the Michigan license plate…

I just did the annual bridge walk on labor day, the thing this episode doesn't do a great job of depicting is that even on an extremely calm day the bridge swings and oscillates about a foot or so. It's a crazy tensor workout just to walk in a line, so as he's climbing and dealing with not knowing where his next step is going to land he can feel the muscles steadying him slowly giving out. Must've been terrifying!

Been across Mighty Mac a lot. Always drama, usually due to high winds. I'm getting vertigo just watching. Mighty Mac is even very scary to drive across, so they have a shuttle service that will drive your car across for you. Don't know of any other bridge that does that.
