In this episode of The Larry Arnn Show, Hillsdale College President Larry P. Arnn interviews C.S. Lewis scholar and theologian Michael Ward. The two discuss Ward's path to becoming a scholar and priest and his fascination with C.S. Lewis. Later, Ward dives into the contents of his books Planet Narnia: The Seven Heavens in the Imagination of C. S. Lewis and After Humanity: A Guide to C.S. Lewis’s The Abolition of Man. This interview was conducted on September 15th, 2023.

Hillsdale College is an independent institution of higher learning founded in 1844 by men and women “grateful to God for the inestimable blessings” resulting from civil and religious liberty and “believing that the diffusion of learning is essential to the perpetuity of these blessings.” It pursues the stated object of the founders: “to furnish all persons who wish, irrespective of nation, color, or sex, a literary, scientific, [and] theological education” outstanding among American colleges “and to combine with this such moral and social instruction as will best develop the minds and improve the hearts of its pupils.” As a nonsectarian Christian institution, Hillsdale College maintains “by precept and example” the immemorial teachings and practices of the Christian faith.
The College also considers itself a trustee of our Western philosophical and theological inheritance tracing to Athens and Jerusalem, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.
By training the young in the liberal arts, Hillsdale College prepares students to become leaders worthy of that legacy. By encouraging the scholarship of its faculty, it contributes to the preservation of that legacy for future generations. By publicly defending that legacy, it enlists the aid of other friends of free civilization and thus secures the conditions of its own survival and independence.

Larry never shies away from a heavy lift. Well done gents. But as academics you dropped the naming of the Dao, in that you attributed it to Confucius instead of Lao Zi. It would be like quoting an apostle words as that of His son’s words. That said the substance and continuity of the flow of this interview is wonderful and most serious. Thank you.

Totally relatable ... Ive always marveled Tolkiens work and never particularly liked C.S Lewis'! And I always wondered why others like CS Lewis.... I will have give Narnia another honest go

The Kabbalah teaches the Earth is at the bottom (Malkuth). But all is conjoined in a Field in fact. Physics takes us way beyond the Atomic model into Waves etc. I'm surprised Michael does not study Philosophy or at least Anthroposophy (Rudolf Steiner et al). He would be fascinated by the Astrological impact of those works. I studied his CS Lewis course with Hillsdale and thoroughly enjoyed the way he teaches. Thank you both.

Also works by G K Chesterton are available as audio books. I suggest Heretics, Orthodoxy, Everlasting Man, and THEN The Abolition of Man as a wonderful set to listen to or read. (GKC was immensely popular from 1903 until his death. American Protestants seem to shy away because he was aggressively supporting the Catholic Church. But then, almost everyone CSL knew was Catholic, if they were Christian.)

Both Tolkien and Lewis had to do a lot of smoking for inspiration or mental activation but I don't think that quality of tobacco is available today

39:08 Note to Mr. Ward, Lao Tzu not Confucius developed the philosophy of "The Tao" and Taoism or "The Way". Confucius developed Confucianism which emphasized "filial piety" and one's responsibility to "The State". Arguably Confucius was antithetical to concepts of "natural law". All those laws and duties Mr. Ward referenced at 43:21 sounds very much like Confucius. Lao Tzu never made any references to one's "duty" or obligations. He only elaborated on how the universe works within the compliments of positives and negatives. Arguably he never made a case for good nor evil. Lao Tzu merely elaborated on how the universe just "is".

How can you know that CS Lewis REALLY had deep skills? Read the books aloud, The word just floooow. They flloat, The rhyhthms propel everything forward and you don't notice until things/events are far advanced

I both deny and challenge the notion that doctrine is not essential to Christianity on the shear basis that Jesus Christ is the Word made flesh.

Perhaps Lewis's categorization of doctrine as accidental or subsidiary to the essence of Christianity is why he can categorically identify both Catholicism and Protestantism as Christian faiths in Mere Christianity.
