Let me share my experience with these and other muzzle loaders as well as the best load combination I have found !
Is one better than the other?
What about the CVA Wolf? Is it worth buying?

Missed two does and a buck. That was me this year. Git the targets out and laid three in the bullseye. Not the equipment. Next day i dropped an eight pointer and a large doe

I have the optima v2. Went through same circus with loads. Problem is here in Idaho we have restrictions that say no 209 primers only loose powder and all lead bullets and no optics. After many shots and loads I ended up with 75 grains by volume of triple seven powder shooting a 460 grain no excuses conical bullet with musket cap ignition. (Had to purchase a different breach plug) with a William's peep sight. I can hold a 3 inch groups at 100 yards. I am sure I could tighten that up with a scope. I hunt deer and elk with it. So far I haven't shot an elk but it sure does flatten a deer. I am getting toward the end of my elk chasing days at 65 yrs old but found I have many more opportunities with elk in the muzzle loader season. I really like the v2. I had a long time muzzle loader fellow at the range tell me that powerbelt bullets that are legal here were inadequate and he had wounded a couple of deer that he couldn't recover. At least I avoided that.

I got a cva stag horn in 2001. Great gun. I shot triple 7 pellets and hollow point powerbelts. 10 years never had any issues shot probably 25 deer. I decided to get a new gun and retire my $99 staghorn so I contacted traditions and special ordered an ultralight. Got a Nikon scope in all I spent close to $700. Shot it a few times to sight it. Thought it was good went hunting and did the same you did. Shot one and never found it. Took it home and it wouldn’t group. I spent a lot of money buying and testing but I found what worked. Found the best powder to use is blackhorn 209.

I have an optima and use granulated powder 100 gr with the powerbelt platinum 270 gr aerotip. Only time Ive had a problem siting in is trying to switch to the 50 gr pellets for easier loading. I was all over the target. Was telling a friend of mine that is a gunsmith the problem is was having and he asked if i had done anything different. I told him i switched from powder to pellets. He said go back to powder. I did and was back to normal. Never would have thought it would make a difference, 100 gr powder or 100 gr pellets. It sure did. Love my optima tho. Every deer ive ever shot I dropped them right there, even heart shots.

That’s really good info and feedback buddy! I have had issues with broadcasting the pyrodex pellets and triple 7 pellets in the past. I marked my ram rod so that it seated exactly the same, but every now and then I still had some issues. When I went to the White Hot pellets it seems like they pack and break into a granular form much easier than the others. Plus I only have to use 2 pellets and get speeds that are between the speed of 2 and 3 triple 7 pellets. I’m good with that! Thanks again for watching and leaving a comment buddy! It helps folks who might be having issues to hear more than one opinion! I appreciate it!💯

I put some Lucas gun oil that's blue in color in a one ounce bottle and a small amount of STP oil treatment together. Like 4 to 5 drops of Lucas gun oil and 2 drops of STP oil treatment and mixed them together and put a small amount of the mixture on the threads of the breach plug and you don't have to tighten it really hard just run it up snug not real tight and I don't have any problem's with my breech plug getting stuck. I applied the oil with a Q tip to the treads on my breech plug and it works great for me. I have used slick 50 that came in a small 2 ounce bottle but I can't find it in the stores any more and that was some slick stuff and only took a small film of it.

@Hunting4Hookers 9 месяцев назад
That’s a good tip! I’ve tried a bunch of breech plug grease with mixed results. I’ll give the Lucas and STP a try. Sometimes the plug comes right out, some times it’s a pain. For me it depends on how many shots before I break it down.

I have the Optima V2 as well. I was contemplating the Accura V2 but decided to try the out the cheaper flavor first. It ended up all in price of $396 shipped to my door with a CVA zipper soft case. It included the scope mount and the Konus Pro 3-9x40 BDC reticle scope. I was leary of the scope but it's actually fantastic! I used T7 to sight in with Hornady 250gr SSTs and I couldn't have been happier. I now shoot Blackhorn 209 loose powder with the same 250gr SSTs. I use the Federal 209A primer with the BH209 due to it being much hotter. At 100 yards I can make one ragged hole. It was about 1.5 inches with T7. Cleaning is much easier with BH209 as well. All in all, like this fine gentleman has said, the CVA Optima V2 is relatively inexpensive and just flat out performs. No need to spend 1k+ on a muzzleloader. Happy hunting and straight shooting!

The CVA optima is a good rifle and the one I have takes up to 150 gr. Of powder for some light bullets up to 300 gr. Sabot 45cal. Bullets and they are very deadly . And then they are heavy bullet's over 300 gr. And I step back to only 2 white hot pellets that do a fine job delivering them down range and they don't play around they are heavy and deadly and have good accuracy. I always like the sabot bullet because they leave no rifleing on the bullet and the bullet is smooth with less drag .

I've also got the Optima V2 LR and love it. Don't know if I just got lucky or they all shoot as good as mine does, but it's very accurate. Mine was the nitrated and cero coated barrel with the thumbhole stock with the Camo like yours and the Konas Pro scope that came with it. I bought mine from Walmart on clearance and it still was high, but I think it's the highest priced Optima they make, so still happy with it. I've also got a plain Jane Wolf and love it too. Open sights. About as good of a brush gun as you could ever ask for. Also own an OLD Hunterbolt Magnum that came to me from a pawn shop for $109.00 and had a never shot .50 and a very good condition .45 barrel with it, plus a whole box full of accessories. Last purchase was from the same pawn shop, and it was a Traditions Vortex Striker fire. It is also camo, cero coated, and had a Nicon MZ drop compensating scope on it. $350.00 for that one and I love it too. It doesn't specify Long Range on it but had a long barrel. Quick remove breach plug. Haven't shot it enough to form an opinion on accuracy but seems to be pretty accurate. Your Firestar pellets are thirty-three grains each, that's why it takes three to equal a one hundred grain equivalent load. I shoot four, they kick, believe me. I get good accuracy out of them, but I also shoot several other powders.

I was shooting 3 , 50 grain 777 pellets and they would rock the heck out of my shoulder! Brother I'm living your story!!! This is DJ with SuburbanHunt365. I'm going through all the combo testing that you spoke about and you ain't kidding the money spent is unreal!!! You mentioned you used a chronograph for your test and I'm curious what FPS you got. I'm my experience the Winchester T7 Muzzleloader primer is one the, if not the single most, slowest primers out there. Granted my test was with Black Horn 209 at 70gr by weight, in my opinion its the only powder cleaner then the White Hots. Regardless the ELR is second in group size only to the Hornady Bore Drivers, which you mentioned. The only thing that I see the Optima V2 has over the Optima is that CVA recommends the loose powder plug when using loose powder of any kind. I plan to put that to the test very soon with both pellets and loose powder. Full disclosure I'm a reloader and because of that I LOVE the loose powder aspect as I can dial in a load for any combo. Myself I went from the Wolf straight to the Optima V2. I loved you video and would love the opportunity to touch base with you and maybe get you out to Tennessee and hunt with you. Love what you are doing keep it up brother. Best of luck in the hunting woods. PS the main difference that I found between the blue and the black tipped ELR projectiles is the Blue are 45cal and the Black are 50cal. Interesting that you said they shot the same out or your Optima V2.
@Hunting4Hookers
@Hunting4Hookers 8 месяцев назад
I tried the Blackhorn 209 and didn’t actually see the benefit being worth the time and money to do it. ( My Opinion) The Whitehots are the cleanest burning and most reliable of all the pellets I’ve used. Chrono speeds were more consistent as well. My average speed was in the low 1600 fps with a 330 grain ELR. The differential between slowest and fastest was less than 20 FPS. I just tested it a few weeks ago on my Optima and got about the same performance. I picked the scope up 7 clicks and rock and roll! I take both muzzle loaders so that I have a backup! I totally gave up on the new 777 pellets! It takes 3 to equal 100 grains and bullets we’re all over the place.

I had good luck with accuracy on the green powerbelts! But I had a couple of deer shot at close range that didn’t bleed much and were never found and I know the shots were good because they hit hard and the deer ran with the front leg dangling so I know I hit the shoulder. Almost an extra 100 grains in the bullet hits a lot harder and causes more mushroom effect ! I think for my distances and and setup they work awesome! Let me know how it does for you! @Hunting4Hookers 11 месяцев назад
When I had my wolf I noticed it a little bit when I would go hunt for multiple days and leave my gun loaded for up to a week. When I got the first optima and was using triple seven pellets, I didn’t notice the problem too much or at all About four years ago, I loaned my Optima to a buddy because he didn’t have a muzzleloader and I had just got the optimal V2. He brought the rifle back to me and said he shot it and cleaned it. I just pulled the rifle out of the case, and set it back in my safe. The next year I got both muzzleloaders out before the season to check them, and the Optima was still loaded! They do hadn’t shot it or cleaned it I noticed the discoloration in the bottom of the barrel, but no real pitting. I guess the stainless barrel saved it I just started with a white hots last summer, and only hunted with the V2. The only thing I’ve noticed so far is that the muzzleloader is super easy to clean with the white hots. Thanks for the comment, buddy!

My thoughts are , this is the only gun You don't have to buy commercial ammo for ( in a pinch , You can make Your own black powder ) . I like the idea of a flintlock rifle for the same reason. ( there may be a time percussion caps may be hard to get . My thoughts of a hawken style rifle would be the best choice.. fifty cal. for ease of finding commercial ammo when available. ( hopefully this gun will shoot both conical and round ball ammo w/ same powder ) . Any recommendations ( both gun and twist rate ) ?

Honestly I’ve never owned a flintlock . They seem like an awesome choice but all I’ve ever dealt with were precision cap and shotgun primer muzzle loaders. I had a TC Hawken Cap rifle that was awesome! But traded it off years ago like a dummy! Let me know what you come up with! The idea of owning a flintlock is awesome!!

Did you buy it? It’s either a CVA or Traditions. Both are great Hawken style rifles!! If it’s an affordable price and good condition I would grab it! Make sure you shine a light down the barrel first. Make sure it isn’t horribly pitted with rust . A little is ok. It will work its self out shooting and cleaning it a few times.

That breach plug should not be hard at all to remove. None of mine are with just a little bit of anti-seize on them. I want to say someone has overtightened it and caused it to leak gas back into the threads gumming it up after a few shots. The seal on them is set the first time they are installed, and you do not want to get carried away with it or they will leak when finger tightened as they are intended to be. The answer is probably to buy a new breach plug, (they are not very expensive), and don't overtighten it the first time it's put into the breach. If the gun will close easily, it's tight enough and it will seal correctly. I've got a Traditions Vortex Striker fire and the breach plug on it is sealed with a small O-ring. I've already bought five extras anticipating problems with that. Although after about twenty-five shots I've had no problem with it yet, but you can see a small amount of carbon does find its way past it. I don't like that design, but on the other hand the Traditions breach plug screws out with only three turns where the CVA's take about thirty.

Those firestar pellets I don't like them because all the air space in those groves and you know what air space in chambers or bullet shells do. I don't think it's safe to have that much air space in the chamber and I think it would be like not loading enough powder in a shell casing and seating a bullet and leaving a air space which is dangerous. And loading a muzzle loader rifle and not seating the bullet all the way to the powder is dangerous and could cause high dangerous chamber pressure . that's why I don't like those firestar pellets that's a lot of air space that I think would be dangerous and the ones I tried didn't work well with bullet groups that I had useing the firestar pellets. I went back to the triple 7 pellets and they worked very well for me and had a tight group. And then I tried the white hot pellets and they are amazing I went from a 2and 3 inche group at 100 yards with the triple 7 to a 1 and half inch group useing white hot pellets and I always use sabot 300 gr. Hornady 45 cal. Bullets. I have been thinking about trying Thor bullets because they say they are very very accurate and that's what I am looking for the most accurate bullets I can get for my CVA optima 150 magnum and I found out 150 gr.three pellets are good for certain bullets but not all bullet types. I get the best accuracy useing two 50 gr. White hot pellets and useing Winchester triple 7 . 209 primers. I have tried different shot gun 209 primers and they all made my bullet groups different. I have used Remington 209. Federal 209. But to beat them all I started reloading my 209 primers with large magnum CCI pistol primers and I think I got the right combination all my rounds are consistent and really good grouping and seems like my barrel stays cleaner with the white hot pellets. I always every shot swab my barrel and keep it nice and clean and it is so easy to load and I have way better groups on paper.and when I load my rifle I use a bore mop with bore butter and lightly grease the barrel just a light film of bore butter and when I make my shot I use a cleaning rod with a patch and wipe out the barrel then lightly grease it with a patch just enough to put a film in the barrel. Load my pellets and then my bullet and push it home and it always pushes really good. Then I lube in front of my bullet with a light amount of bore butter. I think what helped me the most was when I bought my rifle my father and myself lap my barrel before I ever fired a shot through it. We laped and polished my barrel with 2000 grit bore Polish and it looks like a mirror down through the barrel and the rifleing looks great. My father told me look down your barrel when I first got it. Hold the light down at the breech and look down the muzzle end and I did and he said see those little scratches and rough edges on the land's of the rifleing we need to polish those out and that will get rid of those little Burr's on the land's also and it will shoot really well and be easier to load and clean. And my father was a good man and I'm glad he taught me things like laping and polishing a barrel because it makes a whole lot better shot . He told me all those high end rifles they have a man stand there and lap and polish those barrels and the lower end guns don't get laped and polished that's why they are cheaper and the higher end guns cost more and shoot better because it has been laped and polished and they are all the same kind of barrels just and the only difference is the ones that cost more and shoot better has been laped and polished. And I remember when I was real young my father and my uncle would be in my uncle machine shop polishing barrels and then my uncle and my father would go to a rifle tournament and shoot. I wish he was still with me because they was so much more I needed to learn from him. Hey if you decide to polish a rifle barrel don't pull your polishing swab out of the barrel stop right before the muzzle end and then push back the other way and it only takes about 40 push and 40 pulls and then clean your barrel really good and it will look so nice like polished chrome and will shoot really good and less lead and copper fouling. And we always use 2000 grit and 2500 grit that only polishes it doesn't cut
@Hunting4Hookers
@Hunting4Hookers 8 месяцев назад
That’s some good stuff buddy!👍 I’ve polished the barrel on center fire rifles with great results! Never tried it on a muzzle loader. Our only muzzle loader season is early with tons of leaves and foliage here in the mountains of SC. A 60 yard shot is about the norm. If I were shooting longer range I might take the time. I sight in and hold 2.5”groups consistently at 100 yards . Good stuff you wrote there though! Good food for thought!

To be honest, in this situation I think having an older style breech plug with a tool is the answer. @@Hunting4Hookers Black powder substitutes are harder to ignite, that's why it's not commonly used in percussion rifles.. slow or no ignition. test burn them yourself, it's evident.
