It almost time. Muzzleloader season is only a couple weeks out and its time to tune in the rifle. In this video we are testing how well the Hornady ELD-Xs group using Black Horn 209. And how far can we push it.

I think you proved, to me at least, that 250 yards is the absolute max, under the best conditions, with even the best substitute (BH). Thanks, DJ.

It really depends on the caliber you're using I have 50 caliber and 45 caliber muzzleloaders and with 50 caliber yeah most likely your max distance will be 200 yards to 250 yards. But that's because 50 caliber travels at a slower velocity and is less aerodynamic than a 45 caliber muzzleloader bullet of the same grain weight. The farthest I have harvested an animal with a 50 caliber was 100 yards but the farthest I have harvested an animal with a 45 caliber was 305 yards. So the caliber you are using even at the same grain weight does make a huge impact on how far you can ethically harvest an animal in terms of yardage.

try out the Barnes Spitfire EZ bullets.. I shoot 150 grains of White Hot and a 250 grain Spitfire bullet out of my CVA Accura V2/Begarra barrel topped with a Nikon BDC 3x9x40 scope... killed deer easily at 209 yards, shot it at 300 and it was 23.4" low using the crosshairs, no BDC . I have it sighted for 4" high at 100, 3" low at 200. I love this combo, very accurate

So you sighted in zero at 100 yards, correct? If you shoot using those bdc marks in the reticle you MUST have the scope at max power. Did you do that? I have the same gun and I'd like to do exactly this same thing. Thanks in advance and nice shootin brother!

Not that I've ever even seen a bottle of Blackhorn 209 or could afford it if I did. (I think they keep it in Fort Knox), but that 80 grain load looked like the recoil was pretty brutal. Four of the Firestar pellets is about all the recoil I can handle and that looked a lot worse to me.

DJ, can you tell me how many inches the bullet dropped from 100 to 200 yards?
@suburbanhunt3653
@suburbanhunt3653 Месяц назад
Honestly I would be guessing to answer that. I was using the 200 yard mark on the BDC, which would have moved the 100 yard farther up the target. I would guess around 4 to 5 inches above. Then the shot landed 5 to 6 inches low. So please note this is a guess from re-watching the video but I would say around 9 to 10 inches if not slightly more. 340gr projectile dropping pretty quick.

a couple of things. i noticed you don't shoot with your ramrod on the gun. you should. the barrel harmonics will effect your groups at longer ranges. also you should try the new breech plug that uses variflame primer (LRP). the load does not get pushed buy the force of the 209. do not go into the woods with a clean barrel when using bh209. the filthy barrel works way better with 209. i don't swab my barrel until 30 shots. a good rule for me for longer ranges using 270-300 grain bullets is any shot at 200 yards i hold the crosshair level on the back of a deer will put the round in the lungs. any shot ove r250 that i hold slighty over the back about 3 inch and your good. you should check out articles from toby bridges if you can find them. he is the king of muzzleloading. to many variables in bullets and barrels thats why blackhorn works better when used in a dirty barrel. just my opinion from my twenty years of experience with several guns and manufactures.
@suburbanhunt3653
@suburbanhunt3653 6 месяцев назад
Thank you for watching. The ram rob and changing harmonics I definitely understand. I have not heard of the variflame primer so I will look into. As for the dirty barrel. I can see the “ sacrificial shot” to foul the barrel… but I’m having difficulty with not cleaning for 30 shots. Most hunters I know don’t shot that in a year. How does the barrel hold up with leaving the residue in the barrel for that length of time? I don’t have 20 years under my belt, so please let me know. Thanks again for watching. Anything that I can do to improve my skill with the muzzleloader I welcome.

i never fully clean the barrel. bore snake once after thirty and send one down. i shoot all summer and never a problem. blackhorn is the only powder you can do this with.i have accuras and a paramount. i wont use any other powder. clean your breechplug as it will corrode unless its nitride coated.@@suburbanhunt3653

Look at the Leupold Ultimate Slam ML 3x9x40mm scope. Where u turn your power up and down. It has for 100 gr and 150 gr of powder. U sight it in at 100 yds. And has a place for a shotgun slug sight in. U can shoot out too 300 yds with it. I am shooting 84grs of blackhorn by weight. And a hornady 290gr bore driver bullet. Burris E1 3x9x40 ml scope. If u get your Velocity bullet and powder. Sent it in they will make a custom knob for that gun and load. No hold over. Just crank to the yardage u want and shoot. I would like u see how your gun. Likes the hornady 290gr bore driver bullets.

Out of all the test I’ve done the FTX 290 Bore driver is 2nd only to the ELD-X across all pellets. Including the loose powder. Check out any of the Pellet challenge videos. lots of folks don't understand scopes and the hash marks in the reticle. Second focal plane scopes, which are most of the under $500 scopes out there, are NOT accurate unless you use full magnification when using the 'holdover' hash marks. Better to just shoot and use the results for 'kentucky windage' holdover. Know the gun and the ballistics, never mind the damn hash marks.
@suburbanhunt3653
@suburbanhunt3653 4 месяца назад
I agree the hash marks point of aim point of impact will shift depending on the load. It is always best to test your ammo and rifle. And at the root of it you are using "Kentucky windage" when using harsh marks. Thank you for watching.
@jeffhays1968
@jeffhays1968 4 месяца назад
@@suburbanhunt3653 The problem is the hash marks on a second focal plane scope ( which most are ) is they are totally wrong at anything but full magnification. If you have a 10 power scope but calculate a shot with the hash marks a 5 power you may miss entirely or make a bad shot. If you know your gun and the load you can simply estimate stuff in your head and do it correctly. Way too much reliance on tricks and tools and not enough shooting time.
