C2C (Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness) - DRIVERS EYE VIEW [Part 1/2]

A real treat for my viewers, a drivers eye view over the entire London, Tilbury & Southend Railway! Covering the entire system meant I needed to split them into two parts, so part 1 is where we travel from London Fenchurch Street to Shoeburyness over the Barking-Pitsea direct line via Basildon.
We parallel some of the District line to Upminster from Bow and then run out into rural Essex, calling at all intermediate stations en route, explore Southend-on-Sea before continuing onwards to the terminus at Shoeburyness.
Filmed in real time back in September 2021 we have sunny skies throughout. My thanks go out to the c2c team for allowing me to film on their network, without their help this film wouldn't have been made! Of course narration and trackside shots have been included throughout this programme, so sit back relax enjoy the ride from London to Shoeburyness!
Part 2 is currently being filmed and will be released later this year

I’ve never known a more beautiful EMU than the Electrostar class. Looks beautiful and the graceful yet powerful motor sound has no equal. This was the true successor to my childhood fave the Networker class of EMU/DMU. The new Seimens trains have no soul and don’t look great imo. Long live the Electorstar 🙌🏾

I used this line regularly in the late 60's early 70's when living in Basildon. This was before it's dedicated station. If going to London we'd walk to Laindon and if Southend then Pitsea. The stock was old class 302 and 307 units. Most had no corridor just the individual compartments. They were very noisy and rattled a lot. I used to bemoan that Fenchurch Street had no tube connection but it never occurred to me to get off at Upminster or Barking and join the district line there.

Ah the memories of when this was called the LTS line run by network southeast. Used to have days out in London from chalkwell on a one day travel card. Used to love the old slam door trains

Lots of memories of being on the school coach passing though West Horndon via the bridge at St Mary’s Lane from Brentwood to Upminster (1962 - 1972), believed that British Railways were running steam train around 1962, and may have seen them in service.

My great-grandfather was a signalman on this line with a sideline in cobbling shoes. I'll admit I jumped forward to Leigh-on-Sea, Westcliff and Southend Central, where all my mum's people come from.

Enjoying from Vancouver. In 1990 I got a 2 week BritRail pass (1st class) & travelled all over UK. I even went to Tilbury Dockside by train to board the Royal Princess (the one dedicated by Princess Diana). Cheers

What a fantastic video. Many years ago during the summer I would catch the train from Barking and visit Southend seaside for the day with mum and dad. They were great times. It's wonderful to see the full route and listen to your commentary. Thank you so much for doing this.

Well done - an excellent video with pleasing mix of cab-view and lineside and a very well-researched, appropriate and well-spoken commentary. Having used this line for 60 years this year, it's so enjoyable to see the driver's eye view for a change.

Hey Paul, thank you for filming and uploading this railway cab view video. I would also like to see the railway line from Shenfield via Wickford, Rayleigh and Rochford to Southend Victoria filmed. As well as Colchester via Thorpe-le-Soken to both Clacton and Walton-on-the-Naze. Many thanks in advance!

I knew this was going to be good when you said "Shoeburyness" and got it right. Great to see Joan Sims is commemorated at Laindon - I was waiting to be disappointed, but you mentioned her! This is a route I've long wanted to see from the driver's point of view. Thank you.

I love this video because, when I was 6, we moved from Dagenham to Cranham, where the District Line train sidings are, and our house is next to the line. I remember the incredible noise of the steam engines followed by the almost quiet carriages, followed by the clanging of the home signal as it bounced in its post, to danger. The signal box which controlled it was near Frank's Woods, about two hundred yards from my house. I still live there but the modern stock is much quieter and you can't see it through the trees that have grown since then. I tried to see my house, not far from Front Lane Bridge, the first one after Upmister Station, but again, the trees are too dense.

Excellent video and commentary highlighting the local sights and history of the Eastbound line out of London. I especially like the shots of the train and the station details, which are usually omitted from cab-rides. One of the best ways to view travel out of London from my armchair in Southern California.

Lots of memories for me in tbis video. I grew up in Benfleet and my favorite stretch of the railway was going past Hadleigh Park and the castle and then by the river between Leigh and Chalkwell. A view I never got tired of. That little church by the railway was another favorite spot I used to walk to by the railway line between Benfleet and Pitsea.

Good video! A small criticism I have is that I believe we lose sections of the cab ride when the footage changes to local landmarks for example at 44:26 . It would be better if after showing the other footages the cab ride restarted from exactly where it left off. Yes its rather pedantic but just a small criticism. Thanks!

It's difficult for the video producer to please everyone, and I think he got it right with the balance between cab views and other interesting views and local information. As a result I've subscribed to this channel. There are lots of other pure cabview videos out there, but I like having the extra information.

There was another fatal train crash in 1965 just after the Dagenham East station. A train was derailed at the River Beam crossing, at which point there was a noticeable “kink” in the line, eventually stopping on its side behind the houses in St Andrews Avenue, Elm Park. The enquiry however decided that there was an obstruction on the line that caused a derailment….a conclusion some found hard to accept as the driver was one of those killed in the crash as well as the fact the line was straightened the following year.

They have mulled many times to put the connection back in at Upminster but it would mean having to actually signal the branch if they wanted to run trains around on it, one idea based on the Fife circle seems attractive at times of demand running a kind of circle between Stratford, Romford, Upminster and back up but it all hangs up on the Rom-Up being a "closed" single train running working and its just too much bother to change all that lol

c2c have got some of their new rolling stocks being delivered and are to do test runs before they enter service sometime this year. 12 5-Car Class 720/6 Aventra units that are replacing the Class 387/3 but will not replace the 74 Class 357 units that c2c should start refurbishing those units. As the Class 357 came into service in late 1999/early 2000.
