C5 Corvette Active Handling System Errors

Surprise! Our 21-year-old Corvette is having more electronic issues. Over the last few weeks, we have been experiencing Active Handling System errors. We are still attempting to diagnose the problem, but are suspecting the dreaded EBCM. The following codes show up each time we get the failure message:

The mystery I’ve had with my 04 C5 is while driving normally on the highway, the car will do a little bit of a tire squib. The DIC will Report ACTIVE HANDLING. This will happen again two three times before the DIC will report SERVICE ACTIVE HANDLING SOON, Accompanied by the yellow warning symbol. Turn the car off, start it again and it’s gone. The best explanation I’ve heard so far is the suggestion the module has lost communication with a wheel sensor. I’m as baffled as you are and believe me they’re are lots of C5 owners equally lost! I’ll be following along as you continue to troubleshoot. Good Luck!

Frustrating indeed! The closer I think I get to one solution, the more it seems like a dead end. I have at least fully tested the EBCM, so I'm relatively confident that's not it.

I purchased my c5 a few weeks ago and this just happened to me on the highway. Pretty scary when it happened. Now I want to know what caused it and how to fix it

One guy in the forums said that his Aftermarket LED 3 brake light was his culprit as it was mine! I installed my OEM light back on haven’t had it pop back up,even when I tried by hitting the flashers. Blew my mind cause I was about to order a hazard switch (because in my situation the switch would trigger it 100%) but thought I’d give this a shot first. Seems like I lucked out

I have actually been waiting to fully confirm this before making a video, but I was able to solve it with a fairly inexpensive diagnostic tool and a good brake system flush

I get this all the time. I believe it is the battery voltage. Starts up and you get the standard active handling stuff. If i drive for approx 30 minutes then shut car off and turn back on wait a minute or so everything Goes away back to normal. This consistently works right now.

I have narrowed my condition down to specifically aggressive right hand turns, especially when the car is hot. It leads me to believe there is something wrong with the steering position sensor in relation to the other sensors. I am getting some knocking with some of my ball joints and bushings as they are pretty worn, going to replace those and then evaluate if I need a new steering wheel position sensor

EBCM. 2002 coupe is what I’m driving. I had this problem last month (and a few times prior it was intermittent) and finally bit the bullet and repaired the unit myself. There are several RU-vid videos on how to remove, repair and reinstall the unit. I tried everything else before I pulled it for repair. Checked different ground points. Most were corroded and needed cleaning, but didn’t solve the problem. Changed fuses that appeared about to fail, no help. Replaced the battery…. Again! No help. Checked endless amounts of wiring. Not that either. It’s such a common problem, that you can fix yourself. Bad solder connections inside the module… you can either send it out for repair, (2001 - 2004 cars only) or do it yourself. I'm sure that's the direction I'm headed. I've tested all the ABS functions and inlet/ outlet valves for each wheel and everything seems to be working fine with the EBCM, it is directly related to a specific steering angle so I've got one more chassis idea to tackle first

Steering wheel position sensor under dash is my guess. Most ppl unplug it for track days so active handling is completely disabled as it can cause issues (throw error code) like your having mid corner and spin the car.

That's what I'm leaning towards as it seems to be related to steering angle specifically. I've tested all the wheel speed sensors and the ABS pump and all are working fine

I did! I made another video about it a few months later, you can probably find it in the playlist. I fully flushed the EBCM and toggled the ABS pump as well as all the inlet/ outlet solenoids. No more problems.

I started having gremlins on my 02 C5... Before you open your wallet... find the ground points pertaining to your particular problem... better yet clean all the ground points... You can go on line for their locations... when the problem is intermittent, it's usually a dirty ground point... Good luck 🤞...

My only advice is to take it to your GM DEALERSHIP I have had problem with my electrical problems on my C6 where I just couldn’t figure out what’s going on they were able to find the problem

A Chevy dealership was able to work on your C6? Must’ve been an old-school mechanic that knew something about corvette’s. Glad they found a problem with your car.👍

Rear bearings went out on mine and abs ,tcs and active handling stopped working because of bad rear hub bearings

I had to change my battery in my 2005 c6 and for the first few miles it showed 0 psi in all my tires then I tried to turn off active handling but it just turns on/off traction control doesn't even show active handling anymore any idea whats going on?

I had active handling error, i changed the front outer tie rods and the rear and the AH light went away, the rubber was shot and maybe throwing the code

Good tip! The more I look into it, the more possibilities there are! Some things as simple as an alignment or changing tire sizes could be the problem.

Code 1214 is usually the code that pops up if the EBCM is toast.

That one hasn't popped up yet, just every other sensor in the active handling system. Trying to troubleshoot grounds first

Hey guys my c5 starts when cold 100% of the time but if i drive it for about 30 minutes and cut car off it turns over but has trouble starting. Fuel pump is cutting on i can hear it, any ideas? i do have headers someone said they could be over heating the crank sensor but ive had them for years and car just started doing this

While I haven't had that problem with my C5, I've had a few other vehicles with similar symptoms. Most commonly it was a bad MAF sensor.

off top a little,do these c5's have heated seats are they good for long drives say 3-400 miles and one more please,auto or stick ae always wanted a better just about ready to pull the trigger c5-c6 c7 is too much for now thanks

Heated seats are not an option on the C5 as far as I know, but replacement seats (such as the corbeau) are available heated. My personal opinion on the manual vs auto debate is that this is a driver's car. A manual will give you a more pure experience. The later generation DCTs are fine, but the C5 auto trans is from a pickup truck

My 2003 does the same thing both Hot and Cold conditions I just reset the error code

I have been working to narrow down the exact scenario that causes it and think I found it, next step is to take it to a dealership with a proper computer to diagnose the issue

I got an alignment and found i really haven't had much of an issue afterwards. I also cycled the abs pump and all the inlet/ outlet valves in the EBCM while flushing the system. Not sure which one did the trick but it's working well now
