Dunno if anyone mentioned it in comments but if you stare at the harmonic balancer where the grooves are it’s not wobbling. My new 1 day old dayco one does same thing as yours. it’s the rubber circle on the outside balancer. It’s not cut 100% perfect from factory. Wont harm anything. Just looks like it wobbles because of lopsided rubber on outside.

Take this 🍺!! That's exactly what it is! Update: until this day, zero problems!

@@livingchilling2217 yea man. Many others inc me at first thought my brand new dayco was bad from factory. It’s not. It’s the bead of rubber on outside leftover from the mold that put the 2 metal pieces together. I was so angry when I saw mine wobble after paying a mechanic shop $500 labor. I thought I should have bought a gm or Ati for $400. Nope. So to all that read this and see your video, if you replace it, stare at the balancer grooves that the belt rides on and not the front of the balancer….the front looks like it wobbles from the rubber on outside thats not flush to the metal. It comes like that. Peace. Thanks for the video too.

mark harvey Hey great video, happy you got your balancer done your self. Wanted to give me experience on balancer wobble Have a 2000 corvette 6 speed and there was a wobble like yours when I bought the car. Didn’t fix it until the car throw both belts on freeway 😢 Put on a power bond $80 replacement did all the work you did and started the car and the engine was still wobbling just as much as yours. I was really sad 😭😭😭 Researched and found out that the ATI super damper has no rubber in the balancer. Got a ATI SUPER DAMPER AND ARP BOLT. $500 Did the job again. Which sucked Turned the car on and 90 percent of the wobble was gone at idle and 100 percent gone at 2k rpms Really happy i did the job twice to get rid of my wobble mostly 😬 Best of luck to you

Thanks so much for sharing your experience with us!! I have to accept that I've been kinda worried about the wobbling, it's "fun" to do the job the first time, but can't imagine doing it again at least the same week 😅 Thank God, so far so good, but I have that in the back of my mind when trying to have fun with it "you know what I mean" lol usually over 5,000 rpms 😅 However if I ever have that problem again, I'll try to upgrade not only the balancer but the Camshaft too! Just to feel im not doing the same thing again for nothing more than the balancer. That balancer you have in your car is definitely the one to go to, to get rigde of the problem 100%. I bet you enjoy it with peace of mind now!!! Thanks so much for your comment, sending good vibes to you my frend!!!

Thanks for posting! Considering on doing the job myself now after watching your video. Any tips about taking out the steering rack? Everyone always says it's the most "fun" part lol
@livingchilling2217
@livingchilling2217 3 года назад
Nash! Thanks for your comment and subscribing bro! 👍🙏🙏 Tip #1= it's not necessary to take the steering rack all the way out, you can just move the rack to the passenger side it will give you the space you need to do the job! However if you decide to take it all the way out to have extra space, it's easier to the out from the driver's side! #2: the return lines that conect to the steering gear box are a pain in the ass to unscrew them, just be patience you got this! (Remember those words when you get to that part lol) To take out the rack is challenging im not going to lie, but if you have patience and some knowledge you'll be just fine! It was my first time ever doing this kind of job and till today 1200 miles later still quiet and running strong!! For me the hardest part from the job was to unbolt the crankshaft bolt, dude that is some serious torque right there you'll see! I did it by hand tho, didn't use power tools because either didn't fit, or they didn't have enough torque to take the bolt out, so it's harder that way... also when I put it back, there's a lot of turns lol, but after all a fun job to do to learn!! Good luck man!! Let me know how it went!!

Hey I did the same thing to a C4. When I was reinstalling it, the crankshaft bolt broke off. Cried for a little.. but eventually got it all sorted out. For the wobble: could be balancer didnt have the pin weights installed, wasn't torqued down correctly, hub is worn, didnt add the washer inbetween the bolt/hub, or it was just a bad balancer to begin with. I could be missing something, but message me if you'd like more info or see some diagrams from my FSM. great job though loved the video. Installing underneath is the way to go
@livingchilling2217
@livingchilling2217 3 года назад
😲😲😲😲😲 duuuuude!!! You mean the head of the bolt came out???? Did you use a torque wrench? Well the wobbling is still there, I even double checked the torque, because one of the things I don't want to do twice is this job lol... as far as the balancer it self I don't really know.... but as an update, I already put 1000k and still no noise! 👍 And it hasn't move a bit!... Thanks for your comment and good vibes man I appreciate it 🙏🙏🙏
@user-rh1nw7ef5z
@user-rh1nw7ef5z 3 года назад
@@livingchilling2217 I did a lot of things wrong. I used the wrong torque spec from the FSM, cheap sockets too. Aside from what broke the bolt, I didnt even match balance the old balancer or put the 1st cylinder in top dead center with the balancer pointing at 12 o clock. I had to dig the old one out of the trash like some kind of animal to see where the pins went lol. That wobble isn't bad at all, but it's enough that it will walk the seals off the balancer over time. I believe for C5's, you have to use a balancer installer to mount the balancer on real tight before reinstalling the giant crankshaft bolt? but enjoy the car while you save up some money and maybe give it another try once you're comfortable/ see it get worse. Make some more videos!

Hi Good work. I also need to change my balancer. How did you do with ABS modules, was it enough to loosen the bolts and move it. Or did you have to loosen all the pipes as well?
@sspp3065
@sspp3065 3 года назад
So not sure if budget was an issue although since you were there should have at least changed the oil pickup tube O-ring.Only for piece of mind because people have had low oil pressure readings and it was as simple as that O-ring.
@livingchilling2217
@livingchilling2217 3 года назад
Hey man!! First thanks for the comment! I appreciate it. 🙏 I understand what you are saying but that would've meant, taking the water pump out, coolant, timing chain cover and replace the gasket, just to get to that o-ring, on top of everything I did just to get to the balancer!...budget wouldn't been an issue if it needed to be replaced I could've done it, but that wasn't my issue tho, however that could be a problem tomorrow or in the next 10 years! Who knows 🤷‍♂️ . I think that the parts I replaced just to be safe and because I was down there already, like the A/C tensioner and belt was good because I was already there and those parts where basically in the way, but what you are saying is going deeper without the needing of doing it, how ever I totally understand what you are saying, I could've gone deeper and replace the o-ring too just to be safe, however I think that if I ever need to replace it I already know half way to get there, for now I feel pretty happy with what I did! Considering that it was my first time doing something like that on a vehicle!! A Corvette is not to learn how to work in a car but I risk it this time because it needed to be done, but I didn't wanted to go deeper in the engine if I didn't needed to at the time!!
@livingchilling2217
@livingchilling2217 3 года назад
Also low oil pressure could be that o-ring or the oil pressure sensor, oil pump, even the oil thickness 🤷‍♂️i guess ill figure it out whenever I get that problem, if i ever get it!

Good job buddy! Thanks for the video and all the explanations in the comments. It def helps! I have a question though, what causes the harmonic balancer to start to wobble in the first place? What wears out and why? I can't seem to wrap my head around it. Thanks in advance!
@kallo182
@kallo182 Год назад
It is made from 2 Parts. One inner Rim, and one outer Rim. After the time the Rubber between them both begins to get weak, and it start to wobble. If you have to change it, buy the one ATI. It is made for Racing, and way better than the Original Ones.
@jeffb520
@jeffb520 Год назад
@@kallo182 Thank you very much, I get it now. Yeah I will likely put the ati or summit on since I'm building a drift car and will be abusing it.
@kallo182
@kallo182 Год назад
@@jeffb520 Do you have the C5 already? I am not a Drifter, but from what i heard, the Corvette C5/C6/C7 are really bad Cars for Drifting. Because of the 50/50 Weightballance, and the Low Center of Gravity i heard it is really hard to Drift with the Car. Like i sayed. Never try it by myself, just heard that Cars with the Weight in the Front or the Weight in the Rear are way better for Difting.
@jeffb520
@jeffb520 Год назад
@@kallo182 I do have the car already and as far as I know most drifters are looking for a 50/50 weight balance. Everyone is different and I think it really comes down to preference. Having a lighter rear does make it easier to get the back end to slide and it helps transition faster. But drifting is finding the balance between grip and sliding and I think with the right tire size and right power from your motor you can fine tune to your liking. Also the car will have some modifications so it will handle differently than completely stock. There are a lot of people using the Corvettes for drifting so there must be a reason why. Also one of the biggest problems for drifting a c5 is the stock steering angle... it sucks, you need more angle lol. You need to modify it with an angle kit to drift properly. With all that said I guess I will find out if the c5 is good or bad for drifting but I'm def gonna full send it!!! Haha

What’s the purpose of the harmonic balancer ?
@livingchilling2217
@livingchilling2217 3 года назад
They absorb and remove unwanted vibration due to torsional twisting of the crankshaft. They are in effect vibration dampeners and are frequently called dampeners. Dampeners are like torsional shock absorbers used to dampen torsional twist and vibration in an engine, It basically absorbs the engine vibration

I hate how they all wobble even when new so its harder to tell if they are worn. They will never be 100% wobble free since its such a large balancer and the outer layer is just held in by rubber.

250 ft lbs? Are you sure? I am doing this soon and I am hearing other say that it's mfg is 150 ft lbs and that if you do 250 ft lbs you could break the bolt off inside the crank shaft. I am going to pin mine, so I am thinking 150 lbs after pinning would be fine, what are your thoughts?
@livingchilling2217
@livingchilling2217 3 года назад
I'm 100% positive! Whenever you install the new balancer, you have to use a tool to press the balancer into the crank shaft just enough so you can put the old bolt and torque that bolt to 240ft lbs, (if you put 150 ft lbs your balancer won't seat good and you won't be able to install the a/c belt because the alignment of the belt. The pin is just for the balancer not to rotate in the crankshaft but has nothing to do with seating the balancer... whenever you install the new bolt, put 37ft lbs and turn it to 140° and you will be done! Do not put more torque because then it could be possible to brake the bolt! The new bolt is Ready to stretch to 240ft pounds, no more!

No it's not supposed to wobble. But then again most guys heat the new one in the oven at 250°F which I think could damage it. That part never gets that hot under normal usage and the main dampener is just rubber. His best bet would have been to get the "Summit Racing" balancer for around $200 or go "all out" and get the "ATI Super Damper" for around $400. My DD is an '04 Vette and I had a shop install an ATI Super Damper. At first I brought them an OE replacement but they said NO and to return it. Then they ordered the ATI Super Damper and installed it along with an ARP bolt. So far it's been okay. Way better than a stock OE harmonic balancer.
