This is my first is a series of short, concise, C6th Lap Steel lessons, going over the basics of your first instrument, tuning it, the basics of a tone bar and finger picks, and then easy upgrades, strings, pickups, and finally a volume pedal.

Thank you Marie - I put this series together as I was trying to learn Lap Steel on my own. These were the things I wish someone had told me early on.

I put a John Benson 63 Strat pickup in my Rogue. Worked out great and no hum for a standard single coil. I play thru an old Peavey Special 130. The Rogue lap steel is a great instrument for the money. $79 new.

Thanks for the C6th lessons you have started, they are helpful. I was wondering about the 920D dropin though. There just are no comparison videos of stock rogue and then with a 920D drop in, not even from their company.. do you have any songs on the Lap Steel to hear/see the difference? I am still waiting to hear a whole song from you with the little 59 actually..:) thanks again for what you do offer.

I love this idea of comparing with stock vs the 920D drop in. I'll work on that. As for songs,So far I mainly use the lap steel as a backing instrument in a band, but I'll post some videos or other music.

Thanks for this. Two questions: 1) your custom set of strings (15/17/20/26/30/36) is available commercially by GHS - did you know this, and if so, why not buy off-the-shelf GHS’s? And 2) yeah; you’re not plugged in! (So how are we hearing this!?) Thanks again -
@DThompson55
@DThompson55 3 года назад
Hi Bob - Funny story about the strings. Not ha ha funny, I spent far too long looking at equations and engineering models before coming up with those string specs and the story gets even more boring after that. I'm glad GHS has that set. And you're right, I'm not plugged in. It's quite the magic trick. Hopefully that doesn't make the information any less useful.

Thank you for the video. I have someone similar from GEAR MUSIC. I see is one from China similar to yours or another from Harley Benton. My question is: i see the nut in my case is a plastic one. I don´t know if with thicker strings the nut will resist. Is there any way to change the nut for an stronger one?. I see the nut is attached with two screws.Cheers. Eduardo.
@DThompson55
@DThompson55 Год назад
It's a great question, but I'm afraid I don't know how to answer it. If it were me, I'd just put the thicker strings on and see how it works, but if there was a problem with it I'm not even sure where you would purchase a matching replacement nut.

I'm a new eletric guitar player (just bought my lap steel). which pedals do i need to buy? which are the most essential for a begginner that will play western swings on C6 tuning? Clean Booster pedals? Reverb pedal? Tremolo pedal? Pedal equalizer? Delay pedal???
@DThompson55
@DThompson55 3 года назад
Traditionally I'd say reverb or slapback delay pedal. There are so many to chose from I went with an inexpensive Behringer DR600, fine for a beginner, but if I were buying today I'd go much fancier. Maybe a Keeley Caverns or Strymon Big Sky. And potentially you might like a volume pedal for those big swells, but not necessary. Go for the sounds you love.

I dig it. You do you. Something about lap and dobro chew up my thunb, and I just get better town with picks on my fingies. But there are no rules. Just do what works.

Hi Dan. Great channel ! Have subscribed. I bought the RLS-1 about a year ago and am still in the learning process of course. Thanks to people like you it makes the learning curve a lot quicker. Since there are quite a few different tunings for the lap steel, I also purchased a Roadie 2 tuner. It has many different tunings for different instruments, plus you can create your own custom ones. I highly recommend it to anyone starting out on lap steel or even seasoned players. Here's a link to a video in case you haven't seen it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jU1KClujKLE.html I also purchased a loaded pickguard upgrade with a DiMarzio pickup from Sigler Music today. Thanks again for the great channel. Have a great day ! All the best....John

It arrives in about a week. I’ve never played one, I play guitar and ukulele, I just want to see if I like lap steel, and the Rogue seemed like a good entry level.
@DThompson55
@DThompson55 3 года назад
@@Bigbuddyandblue That's kind of where I was 5 years ago. My kid was putting out a new record and wanted a lap player and nobody we knew played it. I went to Carter Vintage and realized how much i could spend, and then said to wife, I might only play this for a few months so maybe something entry level is good. It's been a joy. You don't need to upgrade the pickup, but I like the no hum option.

Do yourself a favor and start w/ finger picks. You'll get much better tone.

Certainly true. I just get blisters after an hour and can't play again for a while. Also, I get better control and better tone with them than without. But that's me. finger picks are matter of personal preference.
@stevenhickenjr
@stevenhickenjr 3 года назад
@@DThompson55 Finger picks are certainly important when it comes to tone and control. Some people can make it work without them but the majority use them.
