Hi Troy: one of my favorite persons; and your video is awesome. Gotta question dear friend? What are the names on strings 7 and 8; on your guitar. For I have some Trivia about C6 you might like. Because Jerry Byrd and I were close; he told me many things; that were not privy to it at the time. So Jerry told me, that he invented the C6 tuning. Later I was told, he didn't. But I still believe Jerry did it. In any case, this is the story: Jerry as you know, was like NO other SG player ever. And he was always thinking up ways to embellish the SG. Thus he invented C6; while the Hawaiians were using mostly: A major, C#min and E7th tunings. So at first; the Hawaiians did not take much to C6. However, when they heard what Jerry was doing; they began to use it more and more. Like: Alan Akaka, Jeff Au Hoy and Bobby Ignano would have a fit; if they could not use C6 NOW. For it fits the way Hawaiians sing; like few other tunings. Fast forward; and Jerry wanted a real 7th chord on his C6 tuning' without using substitutional 7th chords. So he raised his 6th string from C to a C#. Then he had a 5 string full A7th chord; muting the 2nd string. After a while, he got so fast at changing the string back and forth; he would do it in the middle of a song. UN-believable. For his ears were so keen to music; he could do it an a microsecond almost LOL. But true. And dead on. Fast forward again; and Jerry on his new 7 string SG and later Double 8 string SG; he put the C# on string 6 and C on the 7th string. This allowed him to have a full 7th* strum. And then he tuned the 8th string to a LOW LOW "A". That drove us nuts; and we asked, how in the pluperfect Hallelujah; does he get that bass sound; when Jerry would pick that string while playing melody. Sorry I took up so many words Troy. May Jesus rest Jerry's precious soul. I miss him so much; and I shall never forget him. THE greatest laptop SG player; there will ever be. Regardless of what some say. Phooey! LOL!😋 * The "Denominate 7th" is 2 frets lower than the Tonic chord. And it was so handy; when the music calls from a G7th chord; to the Tonic C chord, etc; AND...vice versa. For what it's worth.

Thanks for sharing, Pat! Question about Jerry - did he play a standard guitar much, either acoustic or electric? Like when he was just noodling around the house for fun, or was he always on the SG?
@MrPatdeeee
@MrPatdeeee 2 года назад
@@dylanhenson7146 Oh indeed he did. And when no one wanted laptop SG on their songs any more. Because pedals had come in. And very few didn't want the PSG in their recordings. So to live; Jerry became a rhythm guitar player for a few yrs. on TV shows. But he hated it. Because He loved to play a SG mostly. And he would NOT ever go to pedals. "Dadgum him". For he robbed us; of what he might have done on PSG. Even Buddy Emmons said, he was sorry that Jerry was not playing a PSG. I;m sure Jimmy Day felt same and others too. So Jerry moved to Hawaii where he lived until he died*. And the Hawaiians went crazy over him. So much that they made ONE day a "Jerry Byrd Day". And most of the SG players just idolized him. And many licks that you hear with Hawaiian SG today: came from Jerry. Alan Alan Akaka even took lessons from Jerry. As many others did. Thanks for the reply Dylan. * I called Jerry on his death bed in the hospital. Just before He passed away. It tore me up. And I shall never forget Jerry and our friendship. May Jesus rest his precious soul.

Are you placing the tuning bar in between each line of the fret or on top? Does that make sense?
@jimcox3380
@jimcox3380 4 месяца назад
technically you are placing it on top of the fret, not in between. If you think about a guitar fret (where you actually press the string onto the fret) the fret is what "breaks" the string to create the higher pitch from an open string. On guitar you do press in between because that bends the string down to touch the fret. But on lap steel you aren't touching the fret with the string. If you go in between your pitch will be a little "flat", meaning a little lower than it should be. So you have to aim for the fret and then use your ear to "fine tune" if the pitch seems a tad off. It will become second nature after awhile.
