Derivatization is a chemical method to modify a compound functionally to produce a new compound with an appropriate property for an analytical process that was not attainable for the compound in its initial state.
Derivatization is generally necessary for the analysis by GC of compounds that exhibit one or more of the following properties:
Low volatility, poor chemical or thermal stability, and poor detectability at the detectors.
