A relatively short video today, consisting of what's left of SR 71. Originally signed in 1934, the road went as far south as US 80 (modern I-8) along what is largely now I-15. In Corona, it would veer west onto 6th St cosigned with US 91 and SSR 18. It then went north near the modern alignment and Prado Dam. This bridge was removed after the dam was built due to the reservoir. It then continued north onto modern SR 83/Euclid Ave, turning right on Pine Ave, headed north again along El Prado Rd, continued onto Central Ave to Chino Hills Pkwy (which becomes modern SR 142) to turn right on Peyton Dr. Near the modern SR 71 and SR 60 interchange, Peyton Dr either became, or merged onto Garey Ave so SR 71 could make it's final connection to then US 66/Foothill Blvd. It is widely believed that this road was then signed as a North/South route.
In 1935, US 395 was extended to California and certified to run along a large chunk of SSR 71 in 1939, from US 80 to Temecula/Murrieta. At that same point, SSR 71 was extended east along modern Temecula Pkwy, replacing SSR 79 to Aguanga. (Why? No clue. California does what it wants.) At this point, SSR 71 being primarily an East-West route, it was resigned accordingly. In 1959, the State Highway System adopted LRN 277, running from Aguanga (at the 71/79 Jct) to just east of Anza at SR 74. This was also signed as part of SSR 71.
During the Great Renumbering of 1964, SSR 71 became simply SR 71, one of the few routes lucky enough to keep both it's signed number and not be truncated (again). It continued to be signed as and East-West route. However, when AASHTO and the feds approved the funding of the SR 31 freeway to become the new western I-15 replacement and extension to San Diego in 1974, California was not kind to SR 71. It transferred the segment from Temecula to Corona to the new Route 15 (this would eventually be upgraded to the I-15 freeway), making the route largely discontinuous thanks to California's hate of multiplexes (which in this case would have been completely okay because it would have been uanessacry when I-15 was built). The segment from Temecula to Aguanga was transferred back to now-SR 79, and the segment from Aguanga to SR 74 east of Anza was transferred to the new SR 371 (again, a very rare instance of a new route taking on a 3 digit variant of it's former routing, the only other one I know of was SR 30 with SR 330).
The multiplex along modern SR 91 (previously US 91 and SSR 18) became unneeded and was removed. Previously running over 80 miles from Pomona to Anza, the truncated route was shrunk to just 15 miles - Pomona to Corona. That is the section that still exists today. California reverted it back to a North/South route, however the mile markers were counted from when the road was renumbered in 1964, meaning it's actually counted North to South, instead of South to North. Oddly enough, the exits are counted in the correct order. The southern terminus of the highway with SR 91 is located at Route 71 R-MM 3.0 (R = 1 Realignment since 1964), which is interesting and the only explanation is that in 1964, since US 91 was truncated to SR 91 that the overlap that SR 71 had with 91 was counted towards SR 71's milage and not SR 91's. This would be due to California's prioritization of Routes when it comes to multiplexes (Interstates, US Highways, and State Routes, in that order. The lower number is given the milage along said multiplex, meaning 71 took precedence over SR 91).
This relatively short route actually runs through five cities (Corona, Chino Hills, Chino, Pomona, and San Dimas), 3 counties (Riverside, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles) and 2 Caltrans Maintenance Districts (D7 - LA County and D8 - SB and RVI Counties).
Thanks for watching!

Having been up and down the 71 a few times in the last couple of months, I can report that the traffic lights on the expressway section between Mission and the 60 have been turned off and the intersections sealed. I'm assuming this is permanent and in anticipation of the section (finally) being upgraded to freeway spec in the near future.

Probably because I mentioned the city of Corona, and anything mentioning Corona, Coronavirus or COVID automatically gets that label to cover RU-vid's butt lol

Didn't 71 between Holt Ave and Mission Blvd used to be US 60?
@ForgottenHwy
@ForgottenHwy 7 лет назад
+FirebirdCamaro1220 Yes it was. 71 between I-10 and Holt was also US 60/70/99. The pre-freeway alignment was paved over by the freeway through Kellogg Hill. Even after the freeway was paved, US 60 took modern 71 to reach Mission. At that point, SR 71 still ran up Garey.
