What amazes me about the Nicholas Brothers doing the splits over and over and over again is not them doing the splits, but how they returned to standing up. They didn’t push off the floor with their hands, but pulled their legs together. Amazing!

Back in the 1960's ,when I used bet the ponies ,I would run into Cab Calloway around the $100 bet window in the clubhouse sections at both Aqueduct and Belmont race tracks .He was probably in his 70's then ,but still very dapper with a "cool" aura about him . He lived in Queens ,near both tracks . I didn't know him ,but we were nodding acquaintances and he seemed to be charming and gracious .

My dad was a huge fan of the Nicholas Brothers. As a former cheerleader, the diving splits great, even for men. (Ouch). But the hidden gem is their ability to return to a standing position without assistance from a person or prop. That’s where strength, training and talent really shows just how incredible these men performed. I am paying for those splits now and so did the Nicholas Brothers in their later years.

Cab Calloway was one of the main bandleaders at the mafia controlled Cotton Club.Later, when this movie was made (1943), there were just 2 movies made with an all Black cast, QUITE an accomplishment! And, these movies were not shown down South to White audiences. When the beautiful Dorothy Dandridge and lovely Lena Horne appeared in all White movies as singers, that part would be excised from the reels shown in the South. I only mention this because it is an important part of our history. And, so that young people will understand how hard if was to be a Black performer back then. BECAUSE THEY OPENED MINDS AND HEARTS, we have newly minted millionaires, actors, singers, artists who are freely able to ply their craft. The Nicholas Brothers were PHENOMENAL dancers. NO ONE has EVER replicated the dance on the stairs! Cab Calloway was AWESOME. People who keep their minds open to something other than RAP, can see it. Cabela was a band leader, music arranger, actor, singer and fantastic showman. Check him out in the Blues Brothers part 1. And listen to Minnie the Moocher from back in the day and compare it to him doing the same song in The Blues Brothers ( I think he was 68). If you pay attention to the LYRICS in the song, you'll see that the old folk you see crippin around now ( I guess I should speak for myself I'M crippn) are cooler than you thought! HAH!

When you see the entire end of the clip, Cab comes back in as the nightclub audience comes on the floor to dance, then closing credits. This is a movie that should be seen in its entirety, because of performers like Lena Horne and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson . This was the period in Hollywood cinema history when the movies were segregated. When black people were in mainstream movies, they played the stereotypical roles of maids and railway porters.

@jnagarya519
@jnagarya519 Год назад
@@BritPopsReact The closest to "RAP" is actually folk blues "Talking Blues". For the latest of that you need to go to Bob Dylan's early work; and he got it from Woody Guthrie, who got it from early "plantation" Black musicians who were musically illiterate. And the only thing they have in common with "Rap" is the illiteracy. But at least they, unlike "RAP," included melody, which is essential to music. And Cab Calloway was out of New York and Los Angeles (Hollowood), not New Orleans. And he was light years more sophisticated than illiterate "Rap" "musicians" who mistakenly believe that they are doing "poetry" as revealed by their embarrassingly obsessive focus on obvious over-rhyming. During the 1980s or 1990s, as I recall, there were so-called "Poetry Slams". It was young people strutting their egos on stage spouting "poetry". Actual poetry is composed in solitude, and doesn't make of the poet an obnoxious public ego engaged in a competition of egos, each attempting to outdo the others in attention-getting by being "shocking". Cab Calloway is in "The Blues Brothers" film.

@@BritPopsReact Nowhere near "Rap". see my first comment giving brief contextual history based on the actual history. In short: even the musically illiterate Black "plantation" blues musicians were musically superior to "Rap" by including MELODY. From there Black music evolved to R&B, and then uptown with such as Motown. "Rap" regresses to pre-musical grunt.

@@jnagarya519 You use the word "illiterate" a lot. Just because someone SOUNDS "illiterate" to YOU, doesn't mean they actually are. There's this tiny thing called a *dialect* that has absolutely NOTHING to do with someone's reading ability. Someone reading ability has absolutely nothing to do with the way they sound. Secondly, poetry and rhyming are not synonymous. Just because rap has traditionally included rhyming doesn't mean rappers believe they are "doing" poetry. And even if they did believe that, just because YOU don't think rap is poetry doesn't mean it's not. Who are you? You are not the arbiter of what makes poetry poetry. Lastly, rhyming hasn't featured heavily in rap music for at least 20 years. Clearly, it's an artform that goes right over your head and is not meant for you. The fact that you don't understand it and don't appreciate it means nothing.

@@jnagarya519 And it's funny that you call Cab Calloway "sophisticated". In his day, he and other black entertainers like him were NOT considered sophisticated by mainstream white society. This form of entertainment was considered low-brow. White people spoke about black entertainers like him in literally the EXACT same way you speak about rappers now. It's the reason why people know Fred Astair and Gene Kelly, but not the Nicholas Brothers. It's nothing new to black people. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Cab Calloway? You guys are going WAY BACK. I believe his movies were at the end of the golden age of Jazz. And there was no sound in movie at it's beginning. But there are sound recordings. Jazz with 'Scat' singing is one influence Rap may have come from. 2:47 I see BP2 is saying the same thing.

@Hardtack & Beans This was picked for our "Jazz" random wheel section that we did and as we said, it's not often we get asked to react to something as far back as 1943 so we decided to give it a try and we are glad that we did as we learnt a lot from watching this video. Hope you enjoyed and let's see where we go next.

@@BritPopsReact I liked it. I'm sure the Jazz fans loved it. I saw him in some movies then again in the Blues Brother's movie. I think then was when I came to appreciate what he had done.
