One thing that I think a lot of people overlook: When they're doing the jumps and landing the splits on the beat, the timing is all down to gravity. That means not only did they have to know how to jump and do the splits, but they had to know exactly how high to jump to come down at the right time, and be able to repeat it.

If you don't do "Calloway Boogie" or "Minnie the Moocher," you're missing a lot of Cab Calloway. My late paternal grandparents were massive fans of his music when he came on the scene back then, swing dancing together in their farm house kitchen while cooking supper after a long day of sharecropping. They passed that love to my dad who passed it to me. Nobody in my family can sit still when Cab's playing.

There’s a movie called Tap (1989). It’s starred Sammy Davis Jr. and Gregory Hines. But it also starred all the legendary tap dancers from back of the day. Harold Nicholas at the age of 68, still had those legendary moves. Now that’s a film you should take the time to see.

You're reaction to the Nicholas Brothers is perfect and very common. Not too many people these days understand how influential they were to modern dancing. I'm a professional dancer myself and I have loved the Nicholas brothers for years and still am amazed at what they do. But you will not believe all the influence from these old dancers in movies. Breakers didn't start in the 1970's in the Bronx, it goes back many decades before. Check out a clip from the movie "Hellzapoppin" with Whiteys Lindy hoppers. No singing, just unbelievable dancing.

Yes tap in itself takes years to learn and is as much a difficult skill as ballet and those hip hoppers who can spin on their heads. People can learn these things but only certain people can perfect them and invest their whole beings and lives in them, and some elevate their skills to the next level, like The Nicholas Brothers. An example is, I personally am a trained Tap dancer, that's all you could call me, but the Nicholas Brothers are on a whole other stratosphere, you won't find ANY tapper who does exactly what they do, even now. In a sense tap is so wide berthing in ability from person to person and country to country that so many styles can come out if it. And you'll never find too many tappers much like the one next to them. Especially those who tap from their soul

Most dance routines are practiced countless times before they’re performed, but the legendary Nicholas Brothers could dazzle audiences on the first take. A clip from the movie Stormy Weather (1943)-featuring Cab Calloway and his orchestra performing Jumpin Jive-captures Fayard (1914-2006) and Harold (1921-2000) Nicholas jumping into tap-dancing action to perform an incredible routine that was completely unrehearsed and recorded in one take. Harold appeared in The Five Heartbeats as their dancing coach.

That dance was several takes, but there were no cutaways, which suggests each take used was perfect! Loved these guys, saw them often on TV when a boy (63 now), and have since seen clips of them from a few years before; they were barely out of their teens in this performance in Stormy Weather.

Love this. Cab Calloway was such an entertainer. This is big band/swing music. Its awesome. It gets you moving. You should react to couples swing dancing...bet no one nowadays could do it. Fred Astaire was once quoted as saying this was the best dance routine ever recorded on film. He felt his talent could never even hold a candle to theirs, and he was the most famous dancer in history. The Nicholas Brothers deserve a lot more recognition than they get. And most of all....no slutty stage performance to hide the fact that some entertainers have no talent.

In the 40's rock n roll was only a glimmer in someone's eye. The blues surely made its mark on RNR, but the music of the time was called swing and big band. A great video to watch for an example of the awesome dancing found throughout history would be under the title "'Step Back In Time' - Old School Dance Mashup." The song playing for the video coincidentally goes with everyone's dance routine as well.

WOW! This is SO good! Thank God it is on videotape so that future generations might discover Cab and the Nicholas Brothers. I'm wondering how many hamstrings they pulled doing those crazy splits! Probably NONE because they were obviously in GREAT shape and so athletic! I remember seeing them in old movies on TV when I was a kid. And tap dancing is now a lost art. The last one I can remember was Gregory Hines .... back in the 80's I think. He was SO good at it that he and Barishnikov (not sure of the spelling) made a MOVIE together, blending ballet and tap dancing. It was just thrilling to watch BOTH of them -- they were masters of their art/craft.

The best part is that they weren't even winded at the end...how does that work? I love this video...
