Flashing red light with no antenna = end of train marker. Flashing red light with antenna and hook up to air hose is an end of train air system which sends a signal back to the locomotive to tell the driver the rear of train air pressure and that the train is complete.

Great! Whats the deal with the flagmen? In the UK we call them handsignallers. Presume they were providing some sort of prtection procedure for the train and men on the track. EMD sounds sweet!

Were the crews at 2:30 putting ballast on the tracks? It looks like they might be to me since they've got a truck with rocks in it and an excavator.

Yep,laying new tracks.

Why don't they use rock cars to lay ballast down? Or don't they have rock cars? I've worked a work train before where the maintenance crews laid ballast from the rock cars we had on our train.

***** It depends on the job, the access and where the stone comes from. Sometimes it's just easier to bring it in by truck.
