Well here it is everyone my latest Cab Ride video. For more then 2 weeks I've been planning to ride the Cynwyd Line. On 3/6/18 that adventure happen. Its hard to believe that this was the day before we got our second Nor'easter storm. I got to suburban Station early so I could get the 1071 train out of the Station. Silverliner 5 #729 was the car for this trip and since not many people were taking the train I got my front row seat easily. Train 1071 departed right on time and headed eastbound. Along the way we pass a MOW crew and several other trains. The we took the new connecting track that now starts the Cynwyd Line. I didn't know what to expect but the line reminds me of those Interurban Lines that were very common in the United States. We arrived at Cynwyd at 12:47am and I had about 13 minutes before the train departed. I took some pictures and then filmed the return trip now on train 1072. I had a great time on this trip, and I highly recommend when you get time please ride the Cynwyd Line!

Up until the 1940's, the line had through service to Reading, Pottsville, Hazelton & Wilkes Barre with connections to the Lehigh Valley Railroad. There was also a connector from Phoenixville to Fraser and West Chester. Passenger service was cut back to Reading in 1948, cut back to Norristown in 1953 and cut back to Manayunk in 1960. It was extended to Ivy Ridge in 1979 and cut back to Cynwyd in 1986.

This line went to Norristown and beyond back in the mid 1950s parallel to the Reading Railroad after crossing the Schuylkill River on a beautiful concrete arch bridge.

Besides the fact that this train is painfully slow, it`s amazing to me that there`s that much ridership on this route at all.....as a previous poster put forth, it wouldn`t surprise me if the Cynwyd route was discontinued.

I like how beat up this old industrial track looks in places. It has the look of old iron that has worked hard for years. Real working class Philly infrastructure. Great video!

Same here it adds character and you can see the history of the line because of that. Thanks again, I am glad you enjoyed the video!

If u look thru the cynwood videos from maybe 2yrs ago..u can see what u missed...a ride across the iconic 52nd st cross over ..that line use to run across the schuylkill river..one of the most scenic rides on the commuter line

Thanks for posting this. I can't believe how slow this thing goes. I used to take this from either Ivy Ridge or Manayunk and then they changed it so it only went to Cynwyd. I don't understand the thing about low ridership. When I took it there were plenty of people on it.

No problem and yeah the outbound trip was super slow. Oh I bet back then it was a fast ride. The inbound trip we were rolling. Yeah on this day I think going to Cynwyd including myself it was like 3-4 people. Inbound Philly trip maybe 6-14 people. I can't remember exactly.

Yes indeed it used to be double tracked. SEPTA used to run trains to Ivy Ridge, but feared that the Manayunk Bridge appeared unsafe, resulting in the discontinuance of running trains past Cynwyd. The bridge was proven safe but due to low ridership SEPTA decided to have Cynwyd as the terminus.
@Ih8kone
@Ih8kone 4 года назад
Wrong. SEPTA condemned the Manayunk Bridge in 1986 because it was found to be structurally unstable. The bridge was rehabilitated and restabilized in 1999, but service to Ivy Ridge did not resume as expected. Instead, trackage was removed in 2008-2011 and the righ-of-way is now a trail. Believe it or not, in the 1990s, low ridership led to SEPTA considering abandoning Regional Rail service to Bala Cynwyd altogether. I wouldn't be surprised if that happens.

aww looks like the viaduct tracks are already showing signs of rusting. The new alignment was a fantastic idea. saves so much time. The line was built all the way to Pottstown, but PRR kept cutting it back. The line used to be double tracked the entire route to Pottstown.

Yeah I notice that also and indeed it was a good idea. Yeah someone was telling me coal trains use to use this line. Yeah I noticed that it use to be double tracked.

I didn't know that they were constructing high-level platforms at each station! (Well, maybe except Cynwyd.)

I'm wondering why the Silverliner V wasn't announcing stations for the first few stations?
@stevebullock6084

There was no service the next day because of the snow storm.

Why was the train stopping (6.40) look like a emergency stop. Yes indeed the infrastructure is old and rusting.
@EMDSD14R
@EMDSD14R 6 лет назад
For some reason the buzzer in the cab kept going of so if the driver doesn't hit the controls or touch them the train automatically stops. Not sure what the issue was but things were ok. Yeah we need to get things rebuilt here badly.
@Train538
@Train538 6 лет назад
It sounds more like the engineer (not driver ;) ) got a cab flip, meaning his cab signal unexpectedly dropped from clear to stop. It's extremely frustrating when that happens, especially when you're at speed.
@EMDSD14R
@EMDSD14R 6 лет назад
Yeah that's what I was thinking and yeah true very true.
@jetfixer170

With cab signals in general (as well as the ACSES implemented on SEPTA), the is no STOP aspect, only RESTRICTING. There definitely was a clear signal at INT 36th Street when the train had the penalty application which only leads one to believe that it was not a CSS flip but either a speed enforcement incident or failure to reset the alerter in time. I'm guessing speed enforcement. I've seen this thing happen a few times, resulting in a penalty application; once was on the Trenton Line crossing over at MORRIS from 1 to 4. All it takes is 3 or 4 mph over the posted speed limit to cause it.

wow thanks asking that question because I thought it was Train stop also. I used to ride the Manuyunk local to BSB (Broad Street Station) to the number 12 track where it pulled in front of train 603 Harrisburg Express which left 15 after the Manuyunk local left for its return trip... Great days
