In this video we visit Wellington, New Zealand, served by one of the most scenic commuter rail networks in the world. The system has been upgraded with new Electric trains, track upgrades and the overhead wires have been extended as far as Waikanae on the North Island Main Trunk Railway. During the peak periods the electric and diesel trains are busy transporting commuters to and from work, outside the peaks these regular modern trains are a great way for tourists to explore the Wairarapa, Johnsonville and Kapiti Coast lines. Maybe catch a train to Featherston to visit the Fell Locomotive Museum and learn about the legendary Rimutaka incline, or take an evening train along the scenic Kapiti coast to Paekakariki at sunset, the Johnsonville line, once part of the original North Island Main Trunk railway is a steeply graded, twisting line that climbs high into the Wellington suburbs offering great views over the city before plunging into a series of short tunnels to emerge onto a precarious ledge cut into the steep sided valley (try to imagine massive steam locomotives struggling with heavy trains over this tortuous route before it was bypassed by a tunnel in 1937).
We join the driver of our the diesel locomotive for a trip over the Wairarapa line to Masterton, skirting Wellington harbour on a beautiful sunny day, before making our way up the Hutt valley, climbing into the surrounding hills to enter the 5.5 mile (8.8 km) tunnel beneath the Rimutaka mountains, emerging to a splendid vista over Wairarapa lake, before descending to the plains far below, continuing through fertile farmland and attractive settlements to Masterton.
I used 3 different action cameras to make sure I captured this memorable return journey between Wellington and Masterton. Originally I intended to use the footage from which ever camera gave the best result, but as it turned out even though the cameras filmed the same trip, the perspective from each was quite different, leading me to decide on uploading two outward and two return trips.

Hi Robert, it was fortunate that the locomotive was fitted with a powerful headlight. Sensible train control makes good sense, I assume the unit would have stopped at more stations, delaying our train from Masterton.

Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed it, some of the stations were request halts, the train was not required to stop at all of them, so I am guessing it was running ahead of schedule, hence some extended station dwell times as the train waited to leave on time.

A ute to be specific is a car with a pickup rear end. It has car running gear and performance. Legend has it that a farmers wife asked Ford Australia to build a car to go to market during the week and take the family to church on Sunday. Ford Australia built the first one. My one is the green ute parked at the locomotive depot as come into Wellington.

as a child, like most men i loved trains and still do. in america trains are for cargo only. with the exception of some e. coast cities people don't ride trains. we have 1 long distance passenger train service called amtrak but their trains always seem to wreck, alot. i never rode a train and now im to old and crippled up to. in my next life im gonna chance it and ride a train.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 6 лет назад
Hi Bob, New Zealand railways are a bit like American railroads in that they are mainly used for freight with suburban passenger services around the two main cities, there are also three long distance trains, Northern Explorer, Coastal Pacific and TranzAlpine. I live in the UK where the railways cater mainly for passengers, so for many in Britain train travel is part of everyday life. Train travel is pretty safe, so I think its going to be worth giving it a go in your next life.

I think this bridge was part of general road improvements, although I was stunned to learn that around 10% of the buildings in Wellington are currently unusable due to recent earthquake damage, this link gives a little more information - www.stuff.co.nz/national/nz-earthquake/86674439/daily-earthquakeaffected-buildings-and-damage-updates-for-wellington-city

part of the Dowse drive interchange built about 10 years ago. see also a glimpse of the nearly completed haywards interchange at Manor park(1:18:30), after many years of neglect Wellingtons antiquated roads are finally getting upgraded.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 7 лет назад
I got caught in traffic jams in the Hutt valley as a result of road improvements taking place. Wellington does seen to be tackling the increase in traffic volumes on both the road and rail network. As an occasional visitor I usually stay just outside Wellington near one of the many stations, using the trains to travel into the city itself, as the train-fare is usually less than the cost of parking. It was good to see integrated rail bus interchanges at a number of locations around Wellington.

The GoPro camera does very good movies, so why is this poor quality here? :(
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 6 лет назад
Hi, I started out with the GoPro Hero 2 (a remarkable good camera), then I moved onto this camera Hero 3 Black (it was never a great camera) so I switched to the Sony FDR X3000 (a reasonably good camera), recently I purchased a Hero 6 Black (a good camera with excellent stabilisation) All my action cameras have trouble with certain shades of green, I've tried everything to overcome the problem, without any real success. GoPro's work well at low speeds but suffer as speed increases, even at high frame rates. Here are two videos taken with a Hero 6 Black (slow speed) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rsN9zhkNr2w.html (High speed on a shaking steam locomotive) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dT12qqDQAqA.html There is also a very noticeable drop in quality when I upload video shot at higher speeds with a GoPro to RU-vid. Do you use a GoPro, if so what are your experiences and do you have any tips.
@EdiINTERIA
@EdiINTERIA 6 лет назад
Timsvideochannel1 I used GoPro Hero + and, according to me, it worked fairly well even on the move. I did a lot of movies while car driving. In my films, I am surprised that all the vegetation is blurred, especially the grass. Maybe pay attention to bitrate, which is a very important factor affecting the quality. It can be 4k resolution but with poor bitrate the quality will be worse than regular HD 720p.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 6 лет назад
Hi, your comment prompted me to take a closer look and I stopped uploading the video I was uploading to see if there was something I could do to improve the quality. I edit with Pinnacle Studio, I typed "Loss of video quality GoPro to Pinnacle Studio" it was evident this is a problem so I downloaded a video conversion program - www.ufuware.com/load-gopro-hd-mp4-videos-to-pinnacle-studio/ I tried the trial version with some success, so I purchased the full version. The video I am working on was taken with a GoPro Herocam (entry level GoPro). The video is not that great and looked terrible when I edited with Pinnacle Studio. It will be interesting to see the result, if it is OK I will upload it.

A seven minute stop at Carterton! Stops in the Balkan countries make this look slow and inefficient. I am a Kiwi but I find such delays embarrassing.
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 6 лет назад
The trouble with cab ride videos is that you can't see what is happening on the platform, there may be people with a lot of luggage or a disabled passenger who needs assistance. All these things plus some recovery time can lead to what appear to be unnecessarily long waits, especially if there are no actual delays, trains to pass, disabled people or holiday makers with lots of luggage. It is better to have trains that are reliable than trains that run to overoptimistic timetables that are always late. I have been fortunate to travel on many railways around the world and it is quite normal to experience long dwell times at stations on largely single track railways, it is different with double track railways, because it is not necessary to pass trains in the opposite direction. I have visited the Wairarapa line a number of times and found it to be punctual, clean, comfortable, and the staff really helpful - that is something to be proud of.
