Happy to see Jake Shears shining as the Emcee; TV host Kelly Ripa was raving about his performance the other day; she'd gone to London for the weekend; she and Jake are friends. But I don't think she was just being nice...she honestly thought he--and the show--were terrific!

The beautiful actors covered with such grotesque make up? Why do new productions always have to push the limits?

I am worried that this comment may hurt someone's feeling but the recent Cabaret looks more like a circus rather than a musical. And why are there so many black people in the show. I am not saying that black people should not be on a show but what I am saying is that where Cabaret takes place is Germany not Africa. The show is not to show diversity of races but it is to show the tragedy of the era and how the characters went through the situation and seeing those background-wise unrelated black people is just distracting. I went to New York for the new year 9 years ago and watched Cabaret and it was very very impressive how the show got people into the moment. I literally felt like I was in a nightclub or to be more specific, a cabaret. The atmosphere was so dark as it should've been but also very entertaining and wonderful at the same time. It is not my job to judge a show but I must say that I am very disappointed for how it has changed. I really like Cabaret and indeed it is my favourite musical of all time that I am even willing to pay thousands of dollars again if I can watch the show as how it was with my girl. I really wanted to take my girl to New York one day and show her my favourite musical and taste the reminiscence of one of my favoutie memories together but I didn't expect the show to have changed like this. I'd still take her to watch the show together but I hope it would get better by the time I go there to watch. I hope I didn't hurt anyone's feeling if any member of the show read this comment though. It's just a personal opinion and I didn't mean to hurt anyone's feeling but rather what I want to say is that I want the show to be great so that it would be more enjoyable when I go watch it.

Maybe, there was a massive amount of diversity in europe for that time. I think the ratio was quite fair tbh. Could have had some serbians in there, swiss, polish you name it. Would that make you happier?

If we look at the source material, cabaret is about a club that isn't high class. It's a place where the performers are 2nd or 3rd rate at best. The people who gather to perform there are considered outcasts for their gender, sexuality, religion, ethnicity etc.. They were the people that were targeted by the Nazis (made explicit by the Master Emcee wearing a Holocaust victim jumpsuit with the star of david and a pink triangle to symbolize queer people). I don't necessarily think it would be too far off a stretch to have black people in the show considering there were black people in europe at the time and it's not like the only people who were being persecuted at the time were Ashkenazi Jewish. If you're saying that the revival changed from the movie version with Joel Gray and Liza Minnelli, that was never the original. They had to change a bunch of things about the characters and their abilities in order to keep movie run time. I would hope you give this version a chance in the future: it's just doing something new with the material art direction wise, in the same way that the movie did character wise :]

I mean also black people can play white characters when it’s not centric to the story? It’s not like there is only black people it’s a diverse cast

I love both Jake Shears and John McCrea as Emcee. Their talents shine in different ways, Jake does need to work on being able to raise his voice a bit so the whole theatre can hear him. The current Sally Bowles (Rebecca Lucy Taylor) for Autumn/Winter is fantastic. Loved her persona and amazing singing performance.
