*November 2023 - Seedling Stitch Knitting Podcast*
Welcome to a new episode! The themes of this episode are cable knitting & Xmas!
I made some new progress with the two Japanese cable patterns that I cast on last month (a Balaclava and a sweater) and explained their constructions with you. There are also quite a few new Christmas projects: a chunky colourwork sweater, a sock and a stocking MKAL! I hope you enjoy this episode, and thank you so much for watching!

I love your idea for sharing your creative knitting patterns! Yes, please do it! I think a lot of knitters would appreciate your recipes and modify on their own....Thank you!

Hello Athena, I discovered your channel thanks to the RU-vid algorithm, and I am really happy to meet you. I am Italian and usually I have trouble following English channels, but you have a very calm and pleasant way of speaking, and I understand everything perfectly! I love your style and the models you choose, you are delightful! Greetings from Italy.

I absolutely support you for saying you don't want to grade patterns. And to be honest, more designers should just stop doing it and simply release patterns like the japanese designs. Just include some schematics for one size and some charts and the knitters will do the grading themselves to whatever gauge and size they want. As soon as someone is no longer a beginner (which is literally everyone who knit one sweater) they will do all the calculations themselves. I really believe that grading and hand-holding is not a designer's job. Designer should just introduce the idea, give some measurements for one size (to indicate proportions) and some colorwork/cable/lace charts and the knitter will have no problem figuring out the rest. Everytime I buy a patters I literally just use the charts from it and never even look at all the sizes and stitch counts except to get a vague idea of the proportions. So all the designer's hard work for grading is lost on me and was done for nothing, because I will do my own calculations anyway. So if you have great ideas for a design, just publish general notes/schematics/charts for a couple of bucks, no need to even have it test knit. :)

I totally agree! I’ve seen a trend of “canceling” designers who don’t offer a large range of size in their patterns and had been stressed about grading. I think with the pressure of grading alleviated, I can put more energy in creativity.

Good thinking about your design goals at the present! Offering just instruction recipes and writing up your knitting project is also very valuable to those, who want to recreate some project or ideas - and it is also a documentation and learning process for you. It was actually very optimistic to make a living as a knitting designer by someone so new to knitting. You should still do it, you are very talented and resourceful, just make it a passionate hobby for now. BTW, you look happy and chirpy and more confident - congratulation! All the best with your job and all the things besides it

Thanks for the feedback! I think I have been a very ambitious knitter and brought my ambition to designing too 😆. Now I have a better understanding of my self worth and putting myself into a right position makes me feel much happier!

Your proposal to model patterns from a recipe is brilliant imho and I would definitely be on board to support you. It brings to mind Elizabeth Zimmerman’s percentage system. I’ve long been curious about Japanese and Chinese charted ‘recipe’ patterns wishing they were more accessible to me. If I could learn how to be more independent of the traditional approach of exacting instructions I would be liberated from their constraints. I look forward to seeing where you go with the idea. 💡 😊 p.s., best of luck with your job search, whoever lands you will be very lucky. 🍀

I think your idea of offering patterns based on your personal size/projects is a great idea. And if you’re not charging full price, there shouldn’t be an expectation for full size range etc.

Yes, I would love it if we could adopt a clear pattern/ recipe distinction with people understanding the difference and having matching expectations of what they will get. Then it could be a filter on Ravelry. I have designed a pair of lace socks and three baby bibs and have thought about sharing them but don’t have the resource to have them tech edidted and don’t think I would enjoy grading them. I loved this episode. I found myself smiling so much. Thank you, Athena x

Thank you for the feedback and support! I just hope this requirement for formality wouldn’t discourage people from designing, even if it’s just for their own wearing!

The Seedling piece you played at the end is beautiful-- maybe your theme song for the channel? I really like your plan for designing. It would help you to keep creating, it is so good for our spirits to be creators when we have that passion in us. I would love to support you in the pattern 'pattern' endeavors when I could. Keep making! Have a happy December.

Hello from France ! I'm one of those who joined in on the previous video ☺ Thank you for your videos, it's so inspiring to see all your projects and asian yarns and patterns. I think it's a great idea to offer your knitting notes without all the grading and stuff ! I really appreciate hearing your reflections about pattern publishing because I was wondering if I could do some pattern publishing myself 🤔 Thank you for sharing about the process and the challenges you face. I hope you'll have fun with this new way of designing with no pressure !

Congrats on new subs, you deserve it! 😊 I love your camisole no 5, beautiful decreases! I don’t have the time and skills to knit in tiny needles yet but love to see one. Btw I’ve tried Daruma Genmou yarn, so soft and nice for colorwork 👍 too soft, not good for cables, i want to frog my wip for colorwork.

Hello from Poland. I am one of the latest subscribers, too. You are skilled knitter, I am still learning. Can you explain how you made your winter hat longer. Do you have to rip the cast on stitches or do you simply pick up stitches? 😊
@SeedlingStitch

Welcome! For the hat, I simply pick up and knit along the cast on edge.

I think that you need to do what makes you happy. A recipe for a few dollars is fair especially if you are upfront with it in your pattern description. I feel that knitters are getting too dependent on the written pattern and need their hand held through out the entire process. I wish I had learned to knit with recipes instead of patterns.
