Since you asked, the wires are crimped on the Edge cables. :) Great video, Rick! Thanks for sharing info in helping DJ's understand why some cables are priced differently and what you might get for those upgrades.

@@littlecncshop proper crimps take shocks/vibrations better than soldered joints. aerospace standards is where it's at when it comes to reliability (obviously audio signal cables don't have to qualify for that). they do not rely on purely soldered joints... if you're interested i can elaborate sometime...

The Hosa pro cables are definitely thick and sturdy, one thing I'd like to say is that the female xlr connectors can shatter if they aren't taken care of. I've dropped these cables on concrete floors multiple times and eventually they did shatter but are still usable. Still a great quality cord just treat them with care :)

I have some GLS cables but I am not a big fan of them because the casing seems like it will wear out early. But I keep them in case I have an extra long run. I would also skip the Standard Hosa and go with the Pro. You get better connectors as you move up. If you can afford, the Edge connectors are the best out there.

Can you explain more about the health class part? Jk 😂😂 Speaking from a user of GLS and Hosa. GLS make pretty decent cables. I put them through hell and are still alive! Now Hosa... you can't go wrong no matter which one you chose. I still have a very old Hosa cable with a greenish cover where the Male connector goes in. And still works like new! But I agree with you Rick the Pro series is more than enough for a DJ. But doesn't hurt to go over board with the sexy Edge Cables 😆

Come on man, you're sponsored by the cables you champion, that's ok and all but it's difficult to believe there is absolutely zero bias on your part. While there are certainly problems with super generic China cables, there is little reason any XLR has to be priced at $2.00 per foot. There are quality options less expensive. I enjoy your videos, just keeping it real. Cheers
@DJRickWeb
@DJRickWeb 5 лет назад
I am not sure what you consider sponsored to be. But them sending me out a couple care packages is not sponsored on my part nor do they pay me. Companys reach out and want to send me stuff but I always stipulate I will not make a video unless I like the product and I can trash it on camera if I dont like it. Ben over at NLFX is sending me some of his cables to compare to what Hosa sent me.
@DJRickWeb
@DJRickWeb 5 лет назад
To your point though there could be a Chinese brand out there but since they rarely have good quality control you really will never know.
@chadnliz2k11
@chadnliz2k11 5 лет назад
Hey I'm all for taking quality products and giving them positive press but call it what you wish "care packages" are comps that save you from buying gear from your own pocket, that's a form of sponsorship and I'll just assume if your review isn't glowing you wont be getting more from them. Fair enough. I'm not dumping on you and have gotten value from the work you do. Cheers

FYI, we initially sent Rick a package of things to check out last year, no string attached. It so happened that he began comparing what we sent to what he had and emailed us back because he was really impressed with the Edge cables. And that's more how we prefer to work, in that we want people to genuinely believe in what we make and stand for as a company. When Rick reached out about comparing cables and including some of our lines, we were happy to provide them and at no point stipulated that anything positive needed to be said. As a company, you should be able to stand by your products and let them speak for themselves. I think the fact that Rick took the cables apart to show them inside is a testament in trying to be objective for the viewer so they can get a better grasp of the choices that are available. And yes, obviously Rick has an audience that some companies would like to market through. However, there are honest and dishonest ways of going about that, and what we appreciate the most about Rick is that he's been honest to himself and his audience. We understand how skepticism can arise when companies get involved with RU-vidrs, but not all relationships are created the same and you can rest assured we've never told any influencer what to say or paid them anything for an opinion/post.

They use crimp style is a better way to go if the crimp tool works properly. Most commercial aircraft and some miliary application use crimp style because it doesn't suffer from solder joint problems that can happen. I actually use ferrules on the ends of stranded wire then you can bite down without wires damage.

From what I understand from engineers and audio professionals,is the lower gauge(thicker cable_,offers less resistance,not that it allows more power.The better cables are built to be more durable,offer less resistance, and last longer,especially if you're primarily mobile,disconnecting and reconnecting constantly.The shielding really matters when cables and wires are close together,touching or almost touching,with gear that transmit strong energy fields.If you really are concerned about the cables,get Mogami/Canare in bulk,and then solder or crimp them yourself,or have an audio specialist make them.Out of all of them,the Hosa Pro cables are more than enough.I have a mixture of cables for different applications.... Vampires,which i got from a closeout place...Hosa,which i use mostly,and they are fine....Monster custom cables made by someone near an audio place near me..Mogami,for my guitar($50), some other decent cables,and then i have the standard interconnects color coded..

Look at the Warranty first. The fiber is cable filler it is the material inside multi-conductor cables that takes up extra space around the conductors to form the cable core into a certain shape. It's most commonly used as a way to create a shape for the cable. $5 cable has Chinese replicas of Switchcraft A3F & A3M connectors, foil shield with drain wire. GLS has Chinese replicas of Neutrik NC3FX & NC3MX connectors, the clamp is called a strain re-leaf. Standard Hosa cable has Chinese replicas of Switchcraft A3F & A3M connectors. REAN, a global brand from the Neutrik Group RC3F & RC3M are the XLR available in Nickel or Black with Silver or Gold contacts Hosa Edge has Neutrik NC3FXX & NC3MXX connectors available with Silver or Gold contacts. A true Switchcraft A3F & A3M are quality connectors, equivalent to the Neutrik NC3FX & NC3MX. I have dozens of Belden 8412 cables with switchcraft connectors I have used for over 50 yeas and still in service.

Rca has no grounding. Xlr does. That's it
@gordthor5351
@gordthor5351 3 года назад
@@DJRickWeb Actually both cables have ground wires and when dealing with balanced (differential) pre-amp/amplifiers, 2 of the 3 wires carry the signal. One signal is inverted at the source (pre-amp, DAC.....) and then flipped back at the amplifier. This doubles the amplitude and cancels out any noise that got on the cable. Both wires will pick up noise, but after flipping the inverted signal back to normal and joining both signals, one wire has the noise inverted. Noise + inverted noise = zero noise. RCA has 1 signal wire and a ground wire. XLR is definitely the better way to go with amplifiers.

When I saw "expensive", I would have expected that. $45 these days isn't that expensive for something you won't replace for years, unless of course you compare it to $5 junk. I use an XLR cable at home in a little room and I think $40 or so is an average price for a 10' cable; I wouldn't call it expensive necessarily; mid-priced I'd say. But it's not just the price, it's the quality and lack of interference. You just can't get a cable under $20 that isn't going to "humm" at some sound level. You can only hear it when you put a quality cable next to it. If it's not completely wrapped and shielded, you've wasted your money.

@@DJRickWeb I wouldn't buy them anyhow, my mic isn't worth that. I would like to see a Mogami torn apart though just to see. I watched your video twice (it won't let me "like" twice), and I just bought the Hosa Pro HMIC-010 (10'), the 20 AWG for only 20 bucks. I do some electric work, so I knew about wire sizes, so just made sense to go with it. Size does make a difference since sending a signal on a thicker wire creates less resistance. I shopped around a while before I decided on one you had. I appreciate you showing me the inside. Thanks much for your advice!

Mogami wins because it's the highest quality built/reliability pristine audio signal cables for DJ's. They're guaranteed for a "Lifetime" no excuses warranty. Pretty much you can walk into any Mogami dealer or Mogami direct and your cable end is bent, damaged, becomes noisy, no sound anymore just broken. They'll give you an exact replacement no questions asked. I still have my original Mogami XLR cable for 18 years doing mobile gigs in heavy use, stretched to the limit, wrapped poorly in the past and it still works perfectly and sounds like new. It's a piece of mind knowing I can get a free replacement if I have any issues. It's an investment for everyone serious about their services.

We also offer a lifetime warranty on any of our cables if you have any issue. Mogami makes excellent products, no doubt about it. We do post all the specs for our cables on our website if you want to compare any of our series to theirs. Edge would obviously be the most comparable when you're referring to high end options.

@ anyone reading I just watched a video comparing Mogami, HOSA and 2 others less expensive. 3 or 4 tests were performed... HOSA, Mogami and the 3rd one all blocked out EMF and RMI almost equally; The Mogami won. When it came to recording quality the HOSA and Mogami were within a 1/10th of a dB for Tonality (meaning neither changed the actual tone by more than that). FM it’s all about quality, but sometimes the difference between mid grade and high grade “Anything” cables or otherwise is marginal. That being said the extra money you save for going mid grade might go toward the better amplifier with a better signal processor... JMO you can’t stretch wire, but you can stretch money. If you find a wire stretcher let me know ;)

@DJRickWeb
@DJRickWeb 5 лет назад
You wouldn't see a difference electrical wise. You would need to analyze the wave form being transmitted through the wire and apply the same interference to both to see effects.

The cheapest xlr i have tried is 15€ and that works well. The finish on the connectors is not as good as the 60€ cables, they do not last as long, maybe 2-3 year for me while a 60€ is lasting 5 years and is more flexible and easy to handle. Some mics that have extra short xlr connectors do not work too well with cheaper cables because the connectors do not have to be as precisely made with larger tolerance. Honestly for pro use (not your 100€ gig) like a stage and 400+ visitors use expensive cables 60€ to minimize risk of fail and they are better looking but for your home studio, your small gigs etc. just get a pair of cheap 15-20€ cables for speakers and so on and one more expensive one for special use, like the microphone to make sure the fit is perfect and the sound transfer is the best, especially because people tend to move around when holding microphones and the cable need to last, fit good, do not come loose and be flexible

Been doing broadcast audio for a few decades. The rule is never use RCA cables longer than maybe 10-15 feet. Less if it's a low level signal like from a cartridge on a turntable. You'll get noise pickup.

@6:00 the gauge on an audio signal cable has nothing to do w/ how much "power" it can carry. @18:32 if one is not able to recognize what pin does what in a balanced xlr cable, one shouldn't review audio cables. !! xlr balanced cables reject noise, that is their purpose !! ps: an expensive cable sounds the same as a cheap one, considering both are properly wired, etc. the difference is usually in the shielding against EM interference (most sane people don't run the signal cables right on top of a computer power source) and the build quality (an expensive cable will last longer if abused).

Hosa and Mogami are rip offs. Monoprice and Kopul cables are my top 2 favorites. Monoprice XLR cables actually have a warm and flat sound to them. So studio use for them! While Kopul cables offer authentic Neutrik brand connectors. My mobile DJ use.

Cost of cables has a lot to do with manufacturing and labor, where it comes from. Mogami is made in Japan, hence their prices tend to be higher for comparable cables in spec. It also depends on the amount of hands it passes through, which is why some factories in China can offer very, very inexpensive cables directly. But you are right that the brand matters, as brands often have a threshold of quality they put their name behind. That requires more time, careful selection of components, and QC. But with all that being said, we offer several lines at varying price points depending on budget and quality needs for as many people as we can. While we simply can't offer cables as inexpensive as factories direct, many of those are unbranded or suffer inconsistent quality because they are built down to a price rather than up to a standard. We'd hope that a customer seeing the Hosa name on a cable would expect a certain consistency.

Ok so to cut a long story short, do you KNOW (no assumptions please if you are not 100% sure! ;) ) whether it's ok for me to just be buying ONLY DMX cables to use BOTH with audio AND with dmx lighting? (I mean, I've been reading that you should not do the OPPOSITE: use XLR cables for DMX lighting - cable "shielding", impedance etc etc, so that leads me to understand that XLR cables are more "limited" than DMX cables are, as they may cause problems with DMX lighting. So, what if I I justify bought DMX all the way? That way I can buy A LOT of only one cable type, DMX, and I can just use this for whatever I need. Whether lighting OR sound..) If my thinking/understanding is correct, then why would anyone even bother with XLR cables anymore. Just use DMX for everything and just stop producing XLR cables altogether to avoid confusion and mistakes! Right?
