Cadillac ATS NEW Differential Making Noise - Will Amsoil SVG 75w90 Help?

The dealer installed a new rear end. It was smooth but now its not. Time for "break-in" fluid change. I have heard good things about Amsoil SVG, but usually once a differential starts to growl it's too late but I'm going to give it a try! Happy New Year!!

Great move with all the jacks, you can never be too safe. I hope it fixed your problem!

The amsoil is amazing. Unfortunately these differentials are not lol. But the car has been usable with the last one the dealer installed. Still makes some vibration, but I suspect the mid-bearing (driveshaft) might be part of the issue. Thanks for the feedback :)

Thank for the kind feedback. Its a marvelous car. Ultimately I had to have the dealer replace the rear differential again, but its currently smooth as silk! Nice to hear from you my ATS brother :)

@@sstressfl Of course! so just to clarify it was the rear differential that was causing the car to run rich?
@sstressfl
@sstressfl 3 года назад
@@michaelguidice1663 No the engine had a vacuum leak in one of the active motormounts and connected hoses. They replaced them and it fixed the rich condition... which technically was a lean condition but the computer was compensating for the vacuum leak and dumping extra fuel into the system.

My diff did a gear whine from 30 mph to 45 mph on Amsoil 75W90. To get it to quicket down I purchased their SAE 250 and 75W140 and mixed both 50:50.

My guess is the dealership got in the new one and just left the old one on your car and changed the lube to a thicker lube to make it more quiet. That’s a typical thing for them to do.

Hey brother congrats on the solution. My 2013 rwd has 106k on it. But my rear diff did go out at about 85k and my radiator just cracked 3 weeks ago. Not cheap. But, I paid to repair them. I can’t see getting another car. My car is modded and tuned. They are so fun to drive, I get what you are saying. Is that SVG for AWD only?

Well done. Did you check the fluid level prior to drain? I changed both front & rear diffs about every 30k. Transfer case every 50k.
@sstressfl
@sstressfl 3 года назад
I need to do the front but want to wait until spring.... when it’s warmer. I don’t drive much now so hopefully it can wait. I poured out the old oil into one of my giant measuring cup and found it was a little less than 1 qt... down 4 oz. Not sure if that would be enough to make a difference.

Do you think that many of these failures are due to a stuck diff vent, which causes increased, internal pressure that slowly pushes oil out of the seals? Then, as the oil level drops, damage takes place.
@sstressfl
@sstressfl Год назад
I’ve actually decided the vent is for vacuum. It sucks the seals tight against the axles. I believe the fail comes from metal particles that rip the seals. Bearing failures. My second new rear diff had massive wondering tolerances between the ring and pinion after a few hundred miles. A guy on the Cadillac forum told me he went thru 4 of them before they found a good one. Such a shame. The car was amazing in the brief moments it was smooth. The dealer never could get it right.

@@sstressfl I am quite a bit older than you (63) and retired. I was interested in a lo-po, 4-door 2015 2.5 ATS for going out to eat with family & friends. But from what I have read and seen, I can't imagine buying it (Carvana / Carmax). Now, as a classic car hobbyist, I have seen vacuum pumps on racing engines in order to help with piston ring sealing. But on the diff? I haven't seen a hose attached to the vent or some such thing.

Hey you had a good run 🙏 126k is a lot for trouble free diff on a Cadillac 💪 If it’s rear wheel drive I have read that the rear diff is higher quality than the awd. Get it replaced (or replace it yourself) and you should be good to go. Just make sure it’s a good quality shop that understand the exact process, new bolts, proper torque specs, etc.

Any update on how the amsoil performed in your differential?
@sstressfl
@sstressfl 3 года назад
It is no doubt the most incredible rear gear lubricant I have ever used. The simple truth is that once a rear end is failing, it’s failing. Amsoil might buy you some time but it’s inevitable. My rear diff still has some rumble but it’s more difficult to make it happen. For now I’m good... but researching other options. Like buying a Ford 8.8” center section, custom axles, etc.

If you have some time you can follow the Cadillac ATS playlist I made. A few more vids in the story. But to answer your question, the fluid is amazing, but the rear diff died (it was a new one). Dealer replaced under warranty. Then it happened again. Found out they never installed the rear diff properly. The mounting bolts came loose. That’s what was making it vibrate and growl.

The opposite of oh what a feeling would be Toyota💛 Plus Toyotas’ are occasionally made in America and GM are what Mexico like Coca-Cola. sucks to work on a Toyota nothing ever breaks and if it’s a quarter century old and in the off chance something does finally fail it is four times the price. Cadillac parts are basically free upon recent research. Amsoil is best…Yes

Made in america is pretty sketch these days. I still tend to buy from the big 3.. although I owned a new 2009 Mazda MX5 that was absolutely elegant in its construction and design/materials/fit and finish. And one time I bought a new 2005 Pontiac Vibe and the sales guy said "and it has a toyota drivetrain so you know its good!" LOL! Can you believe it?

Crown and pinion probably made in India or China, same as the bearings. That stuff is made out of chocolate
@sstressfl

No idea but I also suspect they could have been setup poorly. You’re right about chocolate. These diffs have zero tolerance for anything going out of tune.

@@sstressfl I have a Land Rover with a "Bearmach" brand crown and pinion. The genuine Land Rover components are generally speaking Dana U.S.A. or of equivalent quality. About £1000 sterling compared with £450 for the Indian made Bearmach. The rear diff/final drive was forever swimming in dark grey oil , forever changing out the oil. The Dana ones stayed yellow oil. I know that many American manufacturers use Chinese and Indian components these days, even Eaton stuff is made in Taiwan these days. I hear good things about Amsoil 75 90. God bless America. Great videos
