A similar problem existed in the mid-'60s Mustangs, Comets, Falcons etc. producing loud squeaking. There were plugs located where grease fittings should have been anyway so it was an easy fix once you figured out what to do. Naturally this is a more complex problem and obviously can be VERY frustrating. Thanks for posting another great vid.

Thanks for the video Brian! I have a 2014 CTSV with this same problem but when I turn right it makes a clunk noise. Hopefully Tony corrected the thickness like you showed how hard they were to get in Car only has 34,000 miles and Bushings are shot

Great video, Brian! I'm about to tackle this project and replace the front upper control arm bushings on my '09 base CTS RWD. I too bought my polyurethane bushings from RevShift because GM only sells replacement control arms to solve this issue. Mine creaks like a 90-year old with arthritis in cold weather, which isn't a big problem here in sunny Palm Springs, but the handling has deteriorated dramatically! Any imperfections in the road bed makes the car shimmy, side to side, despite the steering wheel being held perfectly steady. I'm hoping the bushings for the base model CTS fit better than yours did, but I won't worry about it. I was about to buy a bushing press kit, but your hacksaw trick looks like an easy alternative. Thanks again for an awesome video!

Polyurethane bushings are the best suspension upgrade ever. Less flex, more control. On a MINI Cooper, it will help the car to not "tramline" when there are ruts in the road.
@briansmobile1

Put the bushings with the control arm in the freezer over night. The cold should shrink the bushings and the control arm should just slip in. If you have a lathe you can turn the bushing to remove some of the material.

Brian you said the arms were on back order from GM but can you buy OEM replacement bushes for this arm? The aussie Fords use the same type of ally arm with non replaceable ball joint and non replaceable bushes. BTW a new OEM arm here is about $500 retail from the dealer so when the customer recovers from cardiac arrest they tend to opt for the Peoples Republic brand.

My '06 Sonata w/100K miles makes a similar sound on the right side. It's more noticeable when the temperature is colder. A shop replaced the struts with Quick struts, but sound was still there. Took it back and they replaced the right Quick strut, telling me the strut was bad. Sound is still there. Having watched your video I'm now seriously thinking it's the A-arm bushings. Is it possible a professional shop could miss something as simple as these bushings? Hmmm.

The only way Tony is going to be made to do these right is when you make him put his bushings in himself. Oh, those are too wide, we have to sand off another millimeter, maybe two. Still super nice you got the replacements. I'm wondering all the time about why aren't you just using an angle grinder on the outside flat portion? Yes to grease zerks right in the middle on the underside if there is nothing in the way there. That teflon loaded silicone grease can't last forever, question is what could you put in there that won't eventually dissolve that particular plastic?
@Adierit
@Adierit 2 года назад
Silicone grease with PTFE additives is used for Polyurethane bushings. It's what they shipped with to begin with.

I have a question, when I drive anything over 78mph I get a vibration. I did balance my wheels and I have new brake rotors/pads. Steering wheel feels really tight and on center, car doesn't pull at all in any detection. No idea what it could be, any thoughts? Great video as always!!!

I was told today the bushings he used are incorrect (V1 version) he should have used V2. This is why he had some difficulty. Talk to Rev Shift in Warren Michigan for your correct version. ALSO, do NOT use Chinese made bushings. I have no association with Rev Shift. Do your research. Enjoy your CTS.

I'm confused. Did you order the wrong bushings the first time or did they send the wrong bushings???? Did you specify how you wanted the bushings trimmed or did you just ask them to trim the bushing shorter? The video seems to put the blame on Rev Shift. If they made all these errors, why should I want to do business with them?

Did you scratch the letter D into the control arm? That could cause corrosion later.
@nestrac
@nestrac 8 лет назад
it's aluminum.... the corrosion if any would be minimal
@jsnyara
@jsnyara 8 лет назад
+The Russian Bear its on a zinc plated cap. doesn't matter. also, if it was anywhere else on the aluminum control arm it wouldn't have mattered since they're not coated in anything anyway. just raw aluminum, which stands up to the elements very very well.
@therussianbear6900
@therussianbear6900 8 лет назад
+firebirdjimbo First of all, aluminum does corrode. I'm an Aircraft Mechanic and so I'm quite familiar with aluminum. Second, how would you know if that arm had a corrosion preventative layer or not? Did you manufacture that component? Third, it is a bad practice to scratch any component that is exposed to the elements and is necessary for safe Operation.
@jsnyara
@jsnyara 8 лет назад
Give me a break. its a tiny spot on a control arm that has nothing to do with structural integrity. And yes, I work in a foundry and do LITERALLY make those parts. that is a 319 alloy, degassed, poured at 1440f. Cars are not flying 10,000 feet in the air at 300 mph. I understand things corrode but it would take 200 years of being pissed on daily to have that scratch make a difference.

I put poly bushings in my Saab about 4 years ago (they're still holding up fine) and bought that sticky white silicone paste at the advice of many people online.... to this very day I have not encountered a more evil sinister product in my life. The internet said, "it'll stick to everything and never come off". Usually the internet exaggerates, but holy SHIT that stuff is pure evil. I was finding little sticky bits of it on my clothes, on my tools, and in my car for a month afterwards. Pure evil.

As I watched I thought maybe hold control arm at 90 degrees to shock mount ? spray a light coat of wd40 or whatever on bushings and rock it back an forth as you tap it? I had to do that on my jeep when putting a lift on it, And expletives were more frequent and loud. The Mrs. will confirm that. Got it done though. Love the work your doing, I would love a lift in my garage as well. Take Care God Bless.

@buggsyspam
@buggsyspam 8 лет назад
+09victoryrc I think you're missing the point a little. Brian even said in the video that they should fit right, but he's crunched for time. What he liked was the the vendor was willing to work with him, and sent new, smaller bushings for free after Brain cut them up. It sucks that they were still that tight, but again the vendor is working to get it right. When you are facing a huge back order of weeks for a the OEM part, you have to work with what you can get. Getting direct, fast support on an after market part like this can make your whole day feel less stressful.
