Bottom-line: Caeleb is just a good man. I want to believe after this psychological stress he's learned how to be a happy man with a healthy mental outlook also, I hope fatherhood helps him keep everything in perspective.
No matter his longevity and future results in the sport, I think it's fair to say that during his streak from Rio,Tokyo and everywhere in between, Dressel was easily the most dominant athlete in the sport by a long shot, arguably even in history, which in my opinion is so much more commendable and praiseworthy than any "defending world champion or defending olympic champion" title that other athletes may hold
Whew… congrats to Mel and Caleb on the greatest swimming interview we all didn’t know we needed to hear! And I love the shouts-out to Body Keeps the Score and The Untethered Soul. Books about how to grow up and process life. ❤
Thank you for baring your soul. It is useful and insightful and will definitely help me moderate my expectations as I go through this swim journey. We are always rooting for Caleb🎉!
Honestly I never care about celebrities life outside of their sport, movie, songs, whatever they do, but I’m so happy for caeleb, I’m happy he overcame his mental struggles, not because of his swimming (although we need him!!) but because he’s such a kind person who deserves it. I’ve met him he’s a funny, down to earth guy. I’d do anything to train with him for a day, he would obviously smoke me, he has a big age advantage and strength advantage, but it would be amazing just to meet him again.
Your are like Eric Heiden, but Eric Heiden probably would like to know you cause he is a normal guy. The guy from Wisconsin was kicking European skaters for 2 years. His 80 lake placid feat was easily the most impressive in history. Look at the track runners. He won the 100,200, 1500,3200,5000. He was 21 and was going to quit to go to Get his Stanford degree. The European skaters older than his told him to please just skate next season cause the fans want to see you. He could walk down a American city with ease. At 64 65 he couldn't walk in half of European countries without being noticed.
This conversation leads all of us forward in the most important task any and all of us have, addressing and removing the obstacles to a whole mind for our own good and that of others, especially the ones who look to us as examples as to how to live or not live, our kids. Congratulations Caeleb on becoming a dad. I listened on the way to the pool today. That was really fun.
He's a great athlete and great person. He's being nice, saying he's an introvert and he has to choose who he can talk to. In other words he has to watch what he says. I'll say it for him, there's a lot of crazies in the world today. He has to be careful who he let's approach him. We can't appreciate what some of these athletes go through and the people who approach them with crazy requests!!
a happier dressel is gonna be a really interesting dynamic to see heading into the paris olympic year. can't wait to see his progression back to (hopefully) his best with an entirely different mental perspective
Good for him. He's humble but also has a personal motivation to be amazing. Kudos to him for coming out on the other side - good things ahead going forward
Great interview. Love Caeleb and Mel but the intro was wrong. He hasn't won an Olympic gold medal time every time he's swam. 5th in the mixed medley relay in Tokyo.
Who compares him to Phelps? They've obviously not watched both of them swim because they are completely different. Last I checked, Pjelps didn't win gold medals for sprints, as well as Caeleb winning golds in the 400IM
after Phelps retired, there was a vacuum of a swimming superstar on the men's side. dressel more or less ended up filling that role for 5 years because of his success in his events. of course if you know swimming you'd know they're nothing alike but that doesn't matter to the larger media

This is Mel. Sorry. You are correct! My phone below up when this video went live with all of my friends/teammates. I was on the US National Team with Rick at the end of his career.
@@SwimSwamTV Rick was a incredible swimmer. He dreamed of gold while breaking the World record.I encourage all swimmers but matter what level enjoy your victories. Joy!
Mel, great interview. I understand the mental health break that was needed. But why was it not asked why he dropped out in the middle of a World Championships? He could not have finished out the meet? In my opinion, that is a let down to his teammates, USA swimming, and to potential qualifiers that would have taken his place.
I 100% believe dropping out of the meet was the last thing he wanted to do. For him to do that so suddenly should tell you just how bad of a mental state he was in.
(This is Mel) He addressed this topic. He didn't know what was going on at that time, only that he needed to find out and decide if swimming would continue to be a part of his life.
