Caerphilly Castle History & Tour / Largest Castle in Wales
Caerphilly Castle is considered one of the most remarkable mediaeval castles in western Europe. Its exceptional features include its enormous size, the second-largest castle in Britain after Windsor, its innovative use of water for defence and being one of the first authentic concentric castles built in Britain. Constructed in the late 13th century, the castle was a revolutionary masterpiece of military planning during its time.

I've been to Caerphilly and I must admit I was very impressed. Such a huge and formidable fortification. Thank you for giving us an insight to the history of this truly amazing place.

Just been. The Great Hall is currently shut for complete refurbishment but you can still peep down from the long Braose Gallery above. Still an excellent castle to visit and you get a free guidebook at the moment.

I'd like to see it fully restored! 'And there's quite a history there! By the way, that's the "Braveheart" embellished movie-story there. As I recall, King Edward the second; Longshank's son, was really into Hugh Despencer, and indulged him more greatly than a man might indulge "another man". Somewhat accordingly, King Edward II was killed, in the "end". (Look it up.) Quite a story, history from life!
