In this video I demo how to do cafe drawing using gesture and scribley line. This is a great way to get drawing, and to practice using gesture technique to sketch people. I’ll show you how to draw figures in a cafe; how it’s easy drawing figures in a cafe quickly. Learn to draw figures in a coffee shop, in your daily sketchbook series with gesture, and work with daily gesture drawing.
Let me know if you also like to draw figures from life, and how you apply your own technique to this kind of sketchbook work.

I sell my painting at art fairs and I try to draw people as they walk past my booth. I takes about 3-4 seconds.. I go for the shape of the hair, maybe nose and ear..it is good practice..

I love quick sketches like these. Personally I find them far more interesting and expressive than drawings that are made with more effort most of the times.

Thank you again for a wonderful, helpful video. The time and effort you put into these helpful videos is appreciated. I guess I’ve always been a little apprehensive about drawings out in public. Like drawing in front of people would seemingly be a little uncomfortable for me. But after watching your video I think I will give it a try. Thanks again! By the way, our dog’s name is Jesse too!

Hi Rolf! Yeah it's difficult to draw in public, but it I think it does help to improve your drawing, even if you just draw the location rather than the people.I don't like if people notice me drawing, so that's why they are really super quick sketches! haha. Ah that's great to hear - Jesse is a wonderful dog so I assume all Jesse's are as well :) Thanks again so much for watching and your kind words, it's very supportive.

Thanks for another great video. I think that advice of being very minimalistic with art supplies is very useful. Usually, when I am out I tend to grab as much as possible because I have these thoughts of " just in case"-) And of course, it turns that in the end I just use one pencil or fountain pen . I want to try drawing in coffeeshops it s just I m very shy to attract peoples' attention even being discreet somewhere in a corner...Love Jessie she is so cute
@Drawing-Life
@Drawing-Life 3 года назад
Ha! Yes me too, i'm also very shy to attract peoples attention... it was tough to film this :) plus people start to feel weird if you stare at them for a long time!! A good tip is to try to sit at a window if you can, and draw people outside the cafe, on the street etc, that way they don't notice you, and then when you get more confident then you can draw people inside, sitting closer. Hope that makes sense. It's really a good thing to try to draw from life, so I hope you give it a go. Thanks for the comment for Jessie btw! I'll tell her :)

Ok, I haven’t YET tested this technique out for charcoal or on paper, HOWEVER, a natural and historical fixative is - get ready for it….- skim milk! Lol It doesn’t stink or mold or anything. So far, I’ve used it on canvas with pastels. I will eventually test it on paper and with charcoal but, figured I’d mention that incase anyone wants to experiment ahead of me! Lol and if it works, there’s your sneaky fixative in a coffee shop method. You’re welcome! 😎
@Drawing-Life
@Drawing-Life 3 года назад
@ozyillustrates wow! Never heard of that before 😆 I'll have to try it out. Would be a great coffee shop method!! lol ...
@OzyIllustrates
@OzyIllustrates 3 года назад
@@Drawing-Life Lol yea. I stumbled upon that when I was trying to find a DIY fixative. Apparently all the great artists back in ye olden days would dunk their paintings (pastel, etc) in vats of milk with the fat skimmed off it (skim milk lol). Why I used it on my pastel painting it really made the whole thing pop! The lighter colors got darker and everything looked much more defined lol
@Drawing-Life
@Drawing-Life 3 года назад
@@OzyIllustrates wow, so interesting I've heard of using hair spray before, but never skimmed milk! Let me know i you try it out with charcoal?

Lovely loose drawings. Would you mind saying how much you speeded up the video? I'd really like to slow it down to real time and watch it like that. I've cafe sketched a few times but would like to do more. I choose a seat in a corner or against a wall so no one can look over my shoulder (if they notice me, that is!) and "phone zombies" are always completely unaware of being drawn..
@Drawing-Life
@Drawing-Life 3 года назад
Haha! I notice that too... people are much more interested in looking at their phones, so it's great! I sped the video 2.5X, I would definitely be keen to post a video at normal speed, just wasn't sure the actual drawings were as useful in this video as the overall advice on set up and materials. But thanks! I think at the time, i only drew each sketch for about a minute or so. Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment! :)

The main sketchbook is from Fabriano, and the smaller one is from Moleskine ... hope that's helpful to you. I don't really have a favorite type of sketchbook, i just usually use whatever I have or can find

I'm going to a Café today! I drew a lot of people on public transport, but it's a bit problematic with the masks currently. Also, they often just stay for 5 minutes and get out of the train/bus. I feel like a Café gives you more time to actually work on your motive
@Drawing-Life

Yes that's true, people moving around is much harder - just aim to get the pose or the gesture. Have fun today! Hope you get some good drawings done :)
