Cafe Racer Vs Bobber (New BMW R18 First Edition) 

Agree 100% the original was better... now customization will be popular with buyers who want to get back to the form of the concept.. and if BMW supplies the parts.... a good (though unethical) way to generate income. Thank you for this update on the R18.

The concept version looks far more better then the final build

Not a fan of cruiser/chopperesque type bikes, but understand that it's a huge market that manufacturers need to cash in on, and BMW have given the bike buying public a good blank canvas. Cheers mate, stay healthy everyone 👍🏻

The concept was stunning. But like most production models they have to run the gauntlet between, marketing, production engineering, financial and of course the dreaded legal department. That is how a production model is birthed.

Been following you sir for some time, this is my first comment. As a fan of the old R-series, I was quite disappointed of the stock motorcycle. You have answered all my questions with this video. How it could and should look. Thank you for taking the time.

Very nice bike. That last Photoshop cafe racer design looks amazing. Yea the seat somewhat more towards bobber but still it's a bad ass bike if you can tinkering and custom it.

All R18 looks incredible, but that cilinder blocks the leggs position to be more relaxed.

You nailed it with your attempt at the production version! I still want the concept too... inverted levers, those exhausts, the headlight... but yours would be a suitable replacement 😉👍

Good job on the 2 designs. Both are big improvements. You're right, BMW made this bike to be customized and we should see some beautiful custom bikes out of this in the coming years.

I’ve ordered the R18 here in Australia. Aside from the huge chrome exhaust I really like it. I agree the concept was better but seating height looked uncomfortable. Yes one can modify it with a plethora of accessories & that’ll be the individual’s choice. Hence why we customize isn’t it? I’m not a fan of your rendering of this as a cafe racer. There’s plenty of other bikes in the market place for that!👍🏻😎

Is all about the profit from the accessories i was hoping the production line to keep the upside down and the size of the wheels especially for the price of it i have one Yamaha xvs650 and i have customized bobber is looking almost the same but the engine is different and all the concept not more than 6000 euros.you always do excellent videos and they are so objective.

Nice video Racer. When I first saw the original concept I thought, not a bad bike. When I saw the production bike I thought no thank you. But that seems to be the way it goes with concept bikes, I do like your take on it as a cafe racer. Ride safe and stay safe in this crazy world we are in right now. Cheers

It will be interesting to see what customs come from this platform but I doubt a cafe racer. They designed it to compete against the American Baggers of HD and Indian and I guess they achieved their goal. But I doubt it will sell like R9Ts. The torque should be awesome and if they gave me one I would love to cruise the boulevard but it looks to be a bulky beast. I do love that chromed exposed drive shaft though. It will be interesting to see what Roland Sands does to it: if anyone can pull off a custom it would be him. Great video. 🇨🇦

A beautiful and magnificent piece of machinery

Reminds me of an old Electolux vacuum cleaner. This is a bike you buy based 100% on style and 0% on any particular quantifiable reason.....like a few other bikes out there.

When I first saw the the original concept I thought I would buy that even though it's not my normal style, when I saw the production bike I thought I don't even want to look at that.

I like the classic paint job, that’s about it.

I like your photo shop versions better than the original. Both versions have a lot of merit and I'm sure you will have inspired a few customises to put your ideas into metal.

I don't like the whole rear section (seat, fender, exhaust), the concept version was much more beautiful.

Bought one yesterday , ill be able to pick it up in about a month.

I largely agree that the cafe style looks more classy than the stock version. That tank, the profile, and the simplicity nod to a classic airhead. My only major disagreement is to have those exhaust pipes going right past the rider's upper thighs... it looks cool, infinitely more so than the bulbous exhaust ends, but scalding my thighs is a whole lot less appealing than having a bizarre exhaust shape.

Great video and a great transformation. I am a big fan of BMW, but to call it a R18 it should have been more "Light". I think, with this bike, they are trying to steel customers from Harley-Davidson. The colors could have been more toned down, it´s to shiny.

It will be interesting to see just how the production bike can be customized, with an obvious design that begs to be changed. For me, this idea was not lost on BMW designers...

Yaaaay, a BMW that looks like a Honda or Kawasaki, a truly courageous design...

They look good at first glance, but without riding one I can't give an opinion. The only I don't like is that giant, wide, simulated fishtail exhaust.

Desde que vi a R18 pela primeira vez adorei o estilo dela e minhas críticas, na época, eram apenas referente a sua funcionalidade e ergonomia, em especial a altura do acento. Assim, minha ideia de personalização visava principalmente melhorar esse quesito ( dirigibilidade ), alterando o mínimo possível aquele design.. isso de acordo com meu critério, claro. Talvez você discorde, mas penso mesmo que a R18 era tão icônica que nem mesmo uma customização para café racer lhe seria coerente: não que ficasse ruim, mas não seria justo com a personalidade dela.. enfim, isso seria uma outra discussão. Mas sim, fiquei desapontado com a versão final proposta pela BMW, seja qual for dos quatro modelos apresentados: ela alterou justamente pontos chave no design, reduzindo deliberadamente a "agressividade" das linhas.. ainda mais com a substituição daquelas lindas rodas originais, como mostrou no vídeo, por essas novas.. afff.. escape, etc.. Até minha esposa torceu o nariz p/ a nova R18 quando a comparou com a antiga: imagine, até uma mulher comentou que a nova versão havia ficado, como se diz no Brasil, "coxinha.." rs.. E até onde vai meu entendimento, não concordo com a premissa de que as mudanças foram p/ contornar exigências técnicas.. talvez um ou outro item pontual apenas. Em suma, intencional ou não, jogada comercial ou seja o que for, nesses novos tempos, a BMW parece ter pego o conceito da sua "moto de homem" e jogado na lata do lixo.. no mínimo dificultou o caminho, aumentou a distância para o resultado que queríamos. I was like you not that happy with the BMW changes from the proto to the production of the R18 but have to recognize you have change our mind we may consider this a next base for one of our customer ;-) ( love the idea to get back to the original tank THX for your great work

Very true what you said, the concept bike was much nicer as the factory version. No idea because BMW lost so much on the way to the production bike. I surely will no swap any of my bikes to this one, it's too ugly.

Your idea for a cafe racer is superb - the original R18 is very difficult to like. What BMW does with the R9T was way better. I don´t understand the bavarians.

As always your videos are exquisite pieces of art. As for the motorcycle in my opiniom it looks bad. I do not understand how BMW did such a poor job after such a beautiful concept. In my opinion looks like a mixture of pieces of Japanese motorcycles joined without any criteria. As an example the front headlight is totally common today, the previous one looked old but it was delicious for me... and these new mufflers... in my opinion no criteria at all

Great video, as always! In my opinion tho, The concept is incredibly beautiful, but the production version is too similar to other models from other companies. There will be custom motorcycles based on this model, but the price tag is already crazy high... Plus the customization! You can buy several bikes... 😂

Not my type of bike at all, but I have to say that technicaly it’s beautifull especially knowing it’ll pass the euro 5 norms, for an air/oil cooled 1800cc that’s incredible.

At first sight, I did not like the pipes at all. Over a somewhat long period of reflection, I sat back and tried to imagine a pipe that was more appropriate for this 21st century rendition of a classic 20th century milestone bike. I could not imagine a better pipe replacement compromise for this classic. Eventually I concluded that the pipe as fitted is definitely the most tasteful for this classic recreation. As time passes, my view and opinion on that pipe has further hardened to the present as being the most tasteful pipe for this milestone bike imaginable. At this time I like the pipe a lot and applaud the design team for their selection.

The seat height is right when it is in the same place as on the R5 as displayed on your cafe racer. The low seats are undriveable

There are 4 different versions and you're comparing the tourer with the concept model. The production bobber isn't that different. Customisation is a huge market that BMW are offering to customers.

Your version is better than anything BMW came up with. I cant believe they have made such an ugly and awkward bike, unless that was the plan from the outset, just so that they could sell parts to modify it. Whats the cornering angle? Not for me. Nice job in photo shop anyway!

Good observations. I think that they have kept reasonably close to the concept, certainly could have been much worse! Its mainly the rear guard and seat which altered the stance, and has somehow made the bike look flat, especially with a rider, it appears odd. The exhausts are an obvious oddity, why did they run with those?!

I love cafe racer version

I get that some people don't like this bike. However, to compare it in any way to a Harley is ridiculous. It's NOT a Harley....it's a BMW. It shares two wheels and is a cruiser....beyond that it would be nice if people stop trying to fit this bike into some sort of mould. I like cafe bikes...I don't think Triumph is necessarily the standard for all cafe bikes. I like Honda's, Triumphs, Norton's....they are all cafe bikes. (can be made that is) This BMW is "another" cruiser...let it be that. I think it looks cool and sounds cool. If others do they will drop the cash for this bike. If you don't like it...walk on by. It will be worth the extra cash (to some...would be to me if I could swing one) JUST to be different. It seems likely that this bike at any rally will stand out...and in an OCEAN of Harley's...that would be a good thing. I hope this bike sells well and that the nay sayers take a break. When a motorcycle company goes out on a limb to appeal to both their base AND new potential buyers.... THAT'S a good thing for the motorcycle community.

Can you share the specs of the parts you swapped, specially the handlebar, fork cover, headlight and rims. I am planning to get the bike, but would like to make the changes.

Will the cylinder head not get damaged to the point of it not being usable anymore if ever the bike tips over?

The concept blew me away. The production bike left me flat. I would not Cafe this bike, there are too many other bikes out there that lend themselves to the cafe style.

R18 is ugly、 and 1800cc?! That's ridiculous But the customizing parts for a different style is a great business idea. Sell the bike once、 and keep money coming in from the extra accessories. Be on the lookout for more manufacturers doing this.
