Hi there, simply the best non bmw review of the bike to come. Thank you for this, you gained a new subscriber. Oh and what a gorgeous motorcycle!

Gavin Lumley This is exactly what is needed for the USA, the engine is perfect! That's what makes BMW what it is. Well done BMW!

I love the concept and it's nice to see BMW testing the waters to gauge demand for what would be their biggest boxer engined bike yet. That said, I don't agree with your point about this is exactly what's needed for the USA. Motorcycle sales have been in a terrible slump for the past several years now, especially for premium, heavy weight cruisers. The reality is that Cruisers, which the R18 seems to emulate are among the lowest in overall sales among all the respective categories. There's still demand for Adventure bikes, Sport bikes, Heavy weight Touring bikes, but cruisers as a whole are a category of bike that many manufacturers are scaling wayyyyy back. Some of the big notable manufacturers no longer even offer a cruiser bike or have cut back their offerings to only a couple models. Even then, most of those bikes are ancient and haven't been changed in the past 10, 15 or 20 years, aside from different paint choices for every model year. The R18 if it were to come to market would be the first, the biggest, and the newest thing to hit the Cruiser market easily in the last decade. It would certainly make big news, but I fear that if Harley-Davidson sales are any indication, the only news the R18's might make is how BMW can't seem to move them off the showroom floors. Beautiful? Absolutely! Innovative? Yup! Visually appealing? Without a doubt? Market demand? Uhhhh......not so much! In short, I think BMW missed the mark by 2 decades. I think they tried something novel with the R1200C that made it's debut in the James Bond movie, Tomorrow Never Dies. That bike never sold well and BMW eventually put it out to pasture. I don't think the cruiser market was ready for a bike like that at the time. I do think however that the R18 would have been a sales beast had BMW offered it instead of the R1200C during that same period. Sadly, 2008 came along with the Great Recession in the US and frankly, motorcycle sales never returned to prior sales levels. The industry now is only a shadow of its former self. The last thing I'd like to mention is cost. I have no idea what the R18 might sell for, but if it's on par with offerings from Harley and Indian, it will be in the $20k+ territory and again, I don't see much demand in that segment compared to the lower end of the spectrum. I wish BMW luck. I own a BMW RT and would enjoy seeing them get in to different segments, but I don't think the Cruiser market is where it's at. My .02 cents worth anyway.

I purchased a 22 R18 and love it. It’s not the conventional cruise position but it’s a different bike. Handling , power , the engine alone awesome It shouldn’t be compared with HD. The boxer engine itself and how it sits is in a class by itself. It’s really what you like and not fall for its not a HD. The long 100 yr history tells the story. This is the fun part, Met some HD cats switching up to the R18 and seen a few HD trade ins heading out for auction. That’s my take. Enjoy the ride no matter what a person rides.

Well this report is 3 years old and I have only just seen my first one in the flesh…. It’s a great looking machine in real life. It can play with but is not a HD. Sadly I didn’t get to ride it. Hefting it off the side stand wasn’t as bad as some others have noted. And looking down at those two big jugs is a tour de force.

It seems to be a different opinion to place the dual cylinders projected outside. They are located towards both the sides below the gas tank and the gearbox in between them. However, I suggest it's an awkward design. It might help the cooling (I didn't look for its complete specifications about its cooling system) and again however the ratio of cooling may not increase in a larger quantity. It is possible to have major damage to its cylinders through crash and knocks. In the video they didn't assemble a crash guard.

The H.D. Softail Standard has the same ergonomics & the editor who tested it hated it. (Cycle World April 2020) One solution: optional springer seat, about 31" high. Opens up the leg angle & reduces slouch & back pain. And retro cool looking. Another thing; if I were buying one I prefer the looks of an 18" rear rim over the 16." Those small, fat wheels have been done & overdone since the 60s.

I own a 2014 Goldwing Valkyrie. It has absolutely perfect ergonomics for my 5' 8" height. The Valkyrie has a Corbin two up seat and I often drive 10 hour day trips. Also drive a BMW R1200R (boxer) on 10 hour day trips. Never have had to extend my legs or get a painful butt on either bike. While driving my Moto Guzzi Griso on 10 hour trips, I have to stand on the pegs to stretch my legs and reset my butt, often. After four consecutive 14 hour days (across Canada) on the MG Griso, both my hands were numb for 6-8 weeks. The summary to this story is; No one bike is ever perfect for every application.

@123456bpb 4 года назад
Yes. This works well for me as well. However it is only when 8 hours plus in the saddle that it is required to stretch my knees out. Definitely not significant criteria for me when shopping for a new bike. Drove my new Moto Guzzi Griso 4000 kilometers in 4 days. It was sufficient to just hang my feet off the pegs a few times each day. I was 68 years old at that time. Hardly seams to be a significant issue to be kicking around.

I'd still like to see the front fender to be more stylish like the R/51s were. They were full fenders and kept the road dirt away from the block, and in this case, the oil cooler would be protected as well. A hand damper and a large fuel tank. 1800cc motors are thirsty beasts, and a small tank is worthless.

I have owned bikes for almost half a century, preferring the sporting end of the spectrum, so when I was given the opportunity for an extended test ride of this cruiser, I didn’t expect much. But after an hour in the saddle, I am actually considering buying an R18 B. The deal breaker for me is probably the lack of adjustable wind protection. If you want to ride serious miles in any type of weather, you need wind protection to make it enjoyable.

I own 2 boxer engine BMW’s. One a 1980 R100S, the other a 2003 R1150R. From my perspective the R18 looks to be extremely close to the 1150R re seating position. That being the case the cylinder heads would not be a problem. I’ve ridden mine 400K’s + a day & have not suffered any discomfort. I am ridden a mates Kwaka Vulcan & for me it was bloody uncomfortable. Anyway my R18 is ordered & I’m rapt!😎👍🏼

I owned a 2009 K1300S and a 2010 R1200RT. To me the R18's seat is way lower in relation to the pegs than my R1200RT, you can see in the BMW R18 video the guys knees are level if not a little higher than his hips... very similar riding position to but not quite as extreme the Harley's Low Rider S which I found uncomfortable. I could spend all day on my R1200RT, I couldn't see myself doing that on the R18. I agree the factory Vulcan seat is uncomfortable, I've fitted a Mustang seat to my Vaquero, It's now a very comfortable place to be. Don't get me wrong, I believe the R18 is going to be an excellent and highly desirable bike, unfortunately it's just not for me.

I’ve always wanted the HD sound on my Boxer and I eventually got it. A nice HD roadster and unbelievably, that sound does so much to hide a remarkably ordinary bike. But I’d rather something that sounds nice sometimes. I know, I know but we all know what I’m on about. I think BMW should concentrate on another sport Boxer, my R1200S (the last one) is a dream of a bike and still the most stirring bike I’ve ever owned and I’ve had nearly every killer model of every brand. BMW. Do what you do best, Boxers! But get that sound a little different, maybe try a Guzzi style obtuse horizontal Vee. It would be the soothing off beat sound many love. I feel the R18 has already died. The black covers scream ‘it’s too wide and I’m trying to hide’. BMW is not enjoying its now S1KRR’s take up numbers and frankly, many of us are not able to cope with the decision speeds and regular G that this thing produces anymore. So it’s actually also a timing issue and recently BMW has been very Japanese like in their innovation. They seem to copy ideas and perfect rather than start and setting the trend. The cruiser market was hot with all of the 45 year olds (mid life crisis’s ), so the Harley’s were going bonkers, then the hipsters with shit box Deus crap and then the 30 yo’s getting the new Softails... all of a sudden HD is killing it outta no where. So BMW (my favourite bike company by miles) just copies. Now thus works for the sports bike market because they set the bar so far beyond it became Hypersport compared to a similarly priced ride. But Cruisers don’t need to do any of that style of innovation. So the the concept absolutely made sense but now the actual bike is going to be desperate attempt to show they have a bigger donk. Sorry guys, Triumph has already sounded that bloody trumpet on that. Make a fast boxer with a decent (not huge) sized pillion to take the missus hotties out for 50-140 km rides.

Great review. I rode a BMW CLC back in 04. This attempt to get back to those cruiser days is half-hearted. This concept would’ve been great in 2009; we’d be on its 4th gen by now. It just seems like an underwhelming and misinformed attempt to step into the American cruiser market. It’ll sell some because of its uniqueness- but I see a fail for its shortcomings, and a very late contender to the waning chopper craze.
@123456bpb
@123456bpb 4 года назад
Definitely not a Chopper craze wannabe. This Jewel is a recreation of days gone by when motorcycles were much simpler in style and function. The advanced technology including Euro5 compliance is mostly hidden to maintain this concept. I expect that the highly desirable inverted forks have been replaced as they contradict this "Simpler" design concept. I see this as a new concept, not a competitive model for any slot.

The R18 concept is beautiful, but looking at the R18/2, they’ve taken away the overall old school look that I fell in love with and no longer love the look of the bike. Being in the US, having ridden Harleys, I personally believe it won’t do well here without forward foot pegs (like said in the video it won’t be possible) and can only imagine the price tag they would be at. For that price I’d stick with Harley.

As you grow so does your way of looking at things. Been riding 40 years now and my style has changed as my body changes. The next gen will get old too, even though at that age you can't imagine it ever coming:)

R18 1 was a winner with its simplicity and styling. I don't like the new headlight, mag wheels, exhausts, levers, forks and tank paint job either. The classic details like the pinstriping gave the 1 a retro romantic custom styling and are all gone and sadly so is me as a buyer! I don't know why Co's bring out the perfect concept bike only to change everything that made it stand out.

The Concept 1 was utterly gorgeous, breathtaking, I would tolerate the riding position for gorgeous. Now it looks like a poor Harley Imitation. I don't know who made these decisions but I was considering buying the r18/1 for the ongoing feeling of riding a functional work of art. Not really interested in the R18/2, like putting a mustache on the Mona Lisa. I think they have made a mistake. I think the original concept would have had broader appeal especially amongst younger riders. I suppose I could buy one and customize it but not worth the expense. Very disappointed. I find the production model eminently forgettable.

Foot placement is ridiculously stupid..... One trip down the dragons tail and you rip the valve covers off..... If Harley tried to build a BMW the outcome would be even more horrific but this is no prize.

7:14 The advantage that HD has. Outweighed by the disadvantage that it's a HD overweight, overpriced and under powered. So if you want forward controls don't buy the Beemer, problem solved. Next😃👍🇬🇧
