2 burrs 1 cup? That is an interesting reference for a channel exclusively about brown liquids.

For anyone struggling to grind beans with a specific handgrinder, what I noticed is that it becomes easier if you use frozen beans (no RDT necessary). It might not be true for every hand grinder, but this is what I noticed from my limited experience. I think freezing makes the beans more brittle and therefore easier to fracture/cut/shatter. Grinding frozen beans also results in more uniform grind size and clearer cups. I freeze beans in ziploc bags with as much air removed as possible. Beans from 1 year ago still taste fresh. You save so much money by buying coffee in bulk and then freezing them.

Absolutely interested in the shape of grounds and flavor profile, I've been interested in balls and grains of sand rounded cylinders to give great results with at most some roundish triangles to fill in gaps and have water pass through more evenly

Congrats on the Sprudgie! Well deserved! As for this grinder, great idea with the burr system but if the UX is bad I don’t know if I could get over it. The coffee coming out of it might taste great but the coffee making process is just as important to me. I’m sure there’s a market for this type of grinder though and we’ll have a dope product that does it all some day soon.

Was in the market for a hand grinder about a month ago and was really considering this but was scared off by the obvious inattention to detail, which I feared would bleed into the cups it produced--also not a ton of reviews. So I went with the safer bet of a 1Zpresso. Not disappointed, but think that this review would've swayed me the other direction.

Great review! Would be keen on particle shape impact on sensory and which grinders produce which shapes. Also, it'd be better if you focus on organoleptic aspects like you focused here than a Gagne-eque focus on quantitative optimizations.

I had one that looked exactly like the Potu but with only ghost burrs, the one with the adjustment mechanism in the middle that worked like the Weber key. And it suffered from a lot of the same issues you mention here but also had a lot of fines. I think it looked like it had a conical pre breaker that was slow to feed the coffee into the burrs. It also wasn't easy to grind with. I think yours seems better. I did notice the same lack of acidity which is interesting but I found makes coffee more boring I like a pleasant acidity in my coffees usually.

@thebitterfig9903 6 месяцев назад
Just because I find it fascinating… and I hope it comes across as love of the subject and interest rather than nitpicking… it isn’t technically the surface area which is larger with these burrs, but the distance the grounds travel. And distance might be more important. Because radius/diameter are squared when calculating area of a circle, the higher outer radius of other flat burrs overpowers the rest of the numbers. As that outer radius gets larger, the area grows at an increasing rate, not exponential growth, but quadratic. However, if you think about the path traveled by a bean, it doesn’t really travel across an area, but a relatively narrow band. If you only look at a narrow arc, about 1mm wide, the area in that small arc is going to be larger on the Orca’s burrs. For any individual fragment of coffee, it probably mostly goes in a straight line, so the larger difference between the outer radius and inner radius on the Orca leads to a longer distance traveled. Probably. Coffee might move around more side-to-side than I know while being ground up. If I had to guess, total area probably matters for grind speed and the total amount of coffee ground, but the thoroughness and quality of the final grounds probably has more to do with distance traveled and that inner-outer difference. With the way that the Orca tends to brew rather well, but be on the slower side, that fits. But I’m not a burr scientist. I just did some basic geometry after a different orca review I watched. Overall, the Orca looks like an interesting grinder, a good idea, but an execution which isn’t quite there yet, and a not-that-great build quality experience. I personally wouldn’t buy one, but maybe the next generation.

@obp3ter
@obp3ter 6 месяцев назад
What I would like to add, considering that I only used it for filter and the only other manual grinder I use is the 1zpresso K Plus, is that 1. I haven't experienced coffee getting stuck in the catch cup this much. Except for the first grind. Then it was an even coat all over the walls. I haven't seen anything like it. 2. After sifting though a few loads with the Kruve, what I saw is that it produces a lot less fines than my other handgrinder, but for me the spread of grind sizes was wider. Over all more even, with less fines, but quite a lot of big chunks. Lastly the flavour profile that it produces is exactly why I got it, and I really like it especially with floral coffees.
@joecal2360
@joecal2360 14 дней назад
at 08:41 you show an excellent graphic grouping the broad flavor categories found in coffee. I'm specifically trying to maximize the bottom tier, which you perfectly describe as having notes of dark chocolate, caramel, and roasted nuts. What would you recommend for someone trying to emphasize those characteristics ? (I'm not at all interested in the upper tiers characterized by citrus and floral notes)

6:16 Those beans look like they’re very lightly roasted. Is that really the case or is it just the lighting or colour grading? Btw, love this video. The intro was quite cheeky but superb! 😁 (Slightly embarrassed that I got the innuendo😊).

@BensCoffeeRants
@BensCoffeeRants 7 месяцев назад
Sounds like a very different profile from what I've heard. Pietro brew burrs are likely more similar to ssp MP 64mm flat burrs. If you want good flavor clarity and acidity that's a better choice but also a lot more expensive and probably not that much nicer to use. I like the zp6 for a smooth tea like pour over and timemore c2 and c3 for a more traditional brew. Timemore c2 and c3 are super cheap too.

@BensCoffeeRants
@BensCoffeeRants 7 месяцев назад
Most hand grinders have a similar bolt on too for the handle so you should be able to that with most hand grinders however it's probably a bad idea. You want a steady slow rpm ideally which is why most of these hand grinders do so well.
@user-ck8of8sk3i
@user-ck8of8sk3i 7 месяцев назад
@@BensCoffeeRants interesting, I wonder what people see with it. With a drill, I get very stable speed, which van be varied. On my jmax I do see a difference with speed, faster is finer and I would need to adjust grind coarser. With ZP6, no difference with speeds. This is only done for pour over and speeds are maybe 60-600x/min, all stable
@BensCoffeeRants
@BensCoffeeRants 7 месяцев назад
@@user-ck8of8sk3ithat's interesting the zp6 isn't as affected by the rpm. Do you have the zp6 that had the slow feeding issue / popcorning? I found some are slow to grind others are pretty quick without that issue. You can feel its not grinding much at one time and takes a while to get the last fragments ground if you have one with that issue.

The ghost burrs version, found as Potu on the internet, exists for years, but people is too much stuck in the conical-flat bubble, to consider such... heresy. The fines quantity is so small that many people simply can't evaluate the taste of such coffee. Just compare under 400 microns fraction, about 8% for ghost versus 11-13% for any other conical. It simply lacks the body everyone is so accustomed.

I see no point with the Pietro out there, better build, best in class burr access, offer also two burrs, little effort in cranking, easy adjustment I prefer over any other that doesn’t loose its settings or calibration when taken burr out and clean a unique feature in handgrinders. It also has the correct orientation of flat burr for a flat handgrinder. It has one shortcomings it is big heavy and use while grinding take times to get accustomed too and some won’t like the way it needed to be hold/hold down… in cup it’s the cleanest, with best seperation and imho beats the 64mm Ssp MP v 1 & 2 that it resembles, the other burr is a more classic profile burr.
@aramse

All fair points but you’re talking about a completely different price point so it’s hard to compare the two.

@mikni4069 6 месяцев назад
@@aramse It’s €272 excluding shipping, import duties and VAT, bringing it into my region would make it around €400 making it more expensive than the Pietro in my location, So while in Asia/India it might be cheaper but it will be in exactly the same price bracket here. The Pietro is €350 so even before all the taxes the price is very close of €78.
