My name is Matt and I'm a coffeeholic. It's not a problem. I can quit any time I want. I just haven't found a time like that yet, and I've been looking for it for the last 40+ years. I actually don't rely on it to wake me up, so much. More of a "comforting habit," I suppose. Maybe I've just grown immune to caffeine? (I don't know if that's really possible, but I know I can drink three cups of coffee and go right to sleep, so... there's that.) My problem is that it gets the old GI machine rolling along, and on a normal day, that's no biggie, but on early run mornings, especially race days, that's a problem. I have generally skipped it if I know that I'm going to want to be running within 60-90 minutes of when I wake up. On a race morning, especially a Disney race morning, where I know I have three hours or more, I'll have some when I get up because I know I have time to work that out. As far as caffienated gels or nutrition on the run, I don't worry too much about avoiding it because by that point I'll be okay. I'm not sure if I can say it has helped me feel more "dialed in" or not, but it's not the first thing I've been accused of not being very perceptive about. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (BTW, thanks for the subtle Star Wars "caf" reference. I'm going to assume that was intentional, whether it was or not. ;-) )

I love my coffee and we don't go a day without it. We're complete coffee nerds and snobs and we do the full bean-grind and French press ritual every single day. I am no kidding when I say when we get a bag of beans that we end up not liking, we just throw it out. But our total intake of coffee is moderate. Over the years we usually did about 500mL of coffee a day each; that's down to under 400mL these days (for various reasons). And more recently I've started to do all my running before I even get a sip of coffee - and I don't notice a difference. Is this a sign I should be chugging the java for peak performance? Nah, I'm good. Thanks for the info about exhaustion and caffeine, HJ. Seems like all the best running advice has nothing to do with the running and everything to do with rest. Great video as always.

I'm not a coffee drinker - I have a little caffeine in the morning before my run (Diet Coke - not necessarily the healthiest thing, I know, but I've cut way back and it helps get me going). I have extreme fatigue in the afternoons due to hypothyroidism (it's much better than it used to be, but still a problem), so after my run, I dump 4-6 "coffee shots" into my protein powder, banana, and almond milk protein shake, and that helps me get through the afternoon (each one is 40 mg caffeine, so 160 mg-200 mg most day, 240 mg if I'm feeling crappy already). (I know that's coffee - I usually can't taste it when it's mixed in with the protein powder). So... I guess I take very little caffeine before and during my runs and a ton after I'm done running. This is what works for me right now.

I'm not a coffee, tea or soda drinker. Caffeine tends to cause me significant issues with my sleep cycle, no matter when I have it during the day. I also just don't like the flavor or bother with it all. That being said, I do find sports beans with caffeine to be helpful on long runs. And sometimes the long run tires me out enough that my sleep isn't too affected. :-)

I love tea, but don't usually drink it before running. During a run, I drink Nuun with caffeine, then depends on conditions/distance if I take Honey Stinger gels with additional caffeine or non. For a marathon or PR attempt I'll take Maurten hydrogel caf 100 for the final push.
