Cage crinoline balldresses from 1850´s and 1860's

Crinoline was used between 1830-1870 and the cage crinoline was patented in 1858. In the 1850's and 1860's the skirt was biggest than ever in the 19th century. This video presents those balldresses/-gowns through different fashion plates, photographs, drawings and paintings. The video is over 6 minutes long, but for enthusiastic fan of Victorian fashion it is not a long time at all.
Music is called Frühlingsstimmen-Walzer (or in English Voices of Spring) by Johan Strauss II, performed by Vienna's Operaorchestra. Now I apologize there is one contradiction with pictures and the music: pictures are from 1850's and 1860's, but the music is composed in 1882... well, at least the music gives the right ball mood! :)
- I do not own the copyrights of the pictures.-
- Please contact if you need any further information about ballgowns in the video or ballgowns overall. -

This era has probably one of my favorite silouettes ever. The low cut, over the shoulder V-line, the copious amounts of ruffles at the neckline, the shape of the front busk, the absolutely gorgeous, flowing elliptical skirts... just once in my life, I want to wear an authentic dress of this era. That would be a dream come true.

I love these styles!!! Back in 1994, I wore a crinoline dress for Halloween, cage and all, except w/out the corset. I loved every minute of it!! Even though the dress was only a cotton print day dress, I felt so lovely and ladylike, and I hated to get back into my regular clothes after the party!! How I wish these styles would return!!
@stephenoshea4207
@stephenoshea4207 5 лет назад
I am pretty sure we could get these styles back in fashion. People would just need to be willing to wear them often. I would sure love to slip into one of these numbers. It seems that a lot of the vintage clothing from the 1950s is popular and can still be worn nowadays.

ghostlylover99123 that's really rude, women can dress however they want. Plus these dresses are dangerous and get catch on fire easily, knock over things, and imagine walking down a street with barely any room to walk because of these dresses ? I think you should have been born in the Victorian era instead
@wilsonsawdemayer5738

@Laura Streeter crinolines are flexible and women back then wore different gowns made from different fabrics depending on the season.

I read somewhere that the English debs' dresses were made of white gauze, which, the article said, made dresses so fragile that they could be worn only once, but which was for show---to show how rich you were.

Sure they were gorgeous and romantic as hell, but how in the world did women go to the privy?? The crinoline was a marketing ploy for whalebone, byproduct of the whaling industry's need for lamp oil. (At 0:41 is Princess Charlotte of Belgium, wife of Emperor Maximilian of Mexico and known as Carlotta. She lived on in Swiss and Belgian sanitariums until 1927.)

+Roger Propes I think that they wore crotchless drawers so they could just crouch over a bowl or something and ... let it go.

Roger Propes women could easily go to the toilet, just go by facing the wall when on the toilet, plus the trousers underneath had a massive hole in them to piss with
