Need to understand how CAGED shapes and pentatonics work together? Gabriel Bergman breaks down exactly where the shapes land on the fretboard and why mixing major and minor sounds can unlock your playing.
Regardless of your preferred style-be it rock, jazz, blues, country, or beyond-the CAGED system serves as a versatile tool. In blues, leverage the system to navigate through dominant seventh chords and blues scales. In jazz, use it to seamlessly connect chord voicings and arpeggios. For rock and metal, explore the system to create dynamic chord progressions and shred-worthy scale patterns. The CAGED system's adaptability makes it a valuable asset for improvisation, composition, and overall musical expression.

I’ve seen several videos on the CAGED system and, to be honest, it’s as confusing to me as that darn circle of 5ths or 4ths or whatever it’s called. Thanks for trying, though.

You can do the open E all the way up the neck, most use a barre but if you dont want to, just play the fretted notes - the notes follow on the low E (5th fret is A, 7th is B etc). Same with a G open shape, that follows all the way up the neck, but I usually just use the Low A and the A and leave the rest alone. As a rhythm accompaniment, it sounds interesting and hendrix-ish sometimes. The open F is the last one that follows the E notes up the neck, and there are a handful of 7ths and sus shapes you can do with that one too. The rest I stay away from - too much thinking and note transposing

The caged system will make more sense if you break down these big chords into 3 adjacent string groupings. Look up a picture of major triad inversions on each string set and refer it back to the caged shapes. Let it be hard but it's not that complicated. I used to think theory was beyond my intelligence but I stuck with it and was well worth it. The alphabet has 26 letters and you can fluently talk, we have 12 musical notes. You can do it!😂

You’re missing out on a system that helps you play in a very deliberate fashion. People who know CAGED don’t know how to “noodle”.

@@user-jq4fz6co8b I know it, my opinion is simply that this is a science based approach to art. Whether or not you like this is up to you.

At 8:45, did you accidentally say - "Including that "major" 3rd with a slight bend...", when you really meant - "Including that "minor" 3rd with a slight bend..."? Thanks! Great lesson.

I’ve seen a thousand “learn the fretboard” things over the years. I’m dumb…I NEVER understand them. Thankfully, I can JUST PLAY somehow.

But bro, you need to unlock your fretboard first. Can't you see it's totally locked?
@markhamblin8194
@markhamblin8194 6 месяцев назад
Its not necessarily locked but blocked, your not "dumb" you just need some fretboard laxitive then your playing will explode out and you will begin to flow freely all over you fretboard. And you will be able to play the funkiest stinky riffs know to man.

I dont know what to say about this. I figure, If you learn the fret board, you will end up doing this anyways I suppose, Practice makes perfect. I suggest all people play all scales on the fretboard as well as using the cage system. I am thinking about trying this, even though I know the entire fretboard minuse beyound the 12. I know it repeats so for me it just means I must practice playing beyond the 12th fret.
