Even though one of my G80s died recently (Panasonic is fixing it), I wanted to set one up in the cage rig. I still need to have one G80 completely naked for vlogging and the occasional bit of photography, so I did the only logical thing I could do. I bought another one.
I still have a few things I need to tweak on this setup, but I've had a few people on Facebook asking me how I plan to set this up, so I decided to make a video. I've also had people asking me about the Desview R5 HDMI monitor, so consider this an introductory overview to that (I'll have a full review on DIYP soon).

23:39 - Desview R5 final thoughts
24:53 - Wrapping up
It seems that the power options I was experiencing with the DC output from the monitor are camera-specific. I tested later with my Nikon DSLRs and the Panasonic GX80 and it had no problem powering them. I also tested the Feelworld F6 Plus with the G80 and that wouldn't power it, either. Interestingly, I could power the G80 using the Type-C USB power cables shown in a previous video without issue. So, I'm not entirely sure what's going on.
Power any camera from USB - • Power ANY DSLR or mirr...
I still haven't managed to figure out what's going on with the LUTs. I think the LUT storage inside the monitor has become corrupted somehow, and I don't see a way to completely reset it. Hopefully, Desview will be able to offer a solution.
Update: So, apparently the Desview R5 doesn't like the 33-point LUT files exported from Resolve, but it has no problem with the 65-point LUT files and they look fantastic! Also, if you're having issues loading LUT files, try a different memory card. The one that came supplied with my R5 was damaged. A new SD card solved the issue.

See the full review on DIYP - www.diyphotography.net/desview-r5-the-new-low-budget-on-camera-monitor-king-of-2020/ What's your favourite on-camera monitor?

I absolutely loved my G85 and regretted trading it in when it came time to get my EOS R. For the money it's one of the best little Vlogging cameras around, hands down! Great video!

Yeah, it's an awesome little camera, especially for vlogging (that's what one of mine is dedicated to). Honestly, I think it's even better for it than the new G100 they're targeting specifically as a vlogging camera, lol.

Did you ever get the dummy battery to monitor DC out sorted? I'm very interested in this. I'm starting to rig out my G85, and want more power!

G’day John, I came here from your Desview R5 review. I’m tossing up between the R5 and the Feelworld F6 and wanted to ask when comparing the two of you found the brightness difference that noticeable between the two? I know the F6 is 500nits while the R5 is 450, but was curious whether you really notice this in practice.
@JohnAldred
@JohnAldred 3 года назад
I haven't really. They're both pretty close to each other actually. What I will say, though, which has me leaning towards the F6 Plus for a mobile rig like this (when on battery power) is that there's no power indicator LED on the R5. And in bright conditions, you can't quite always tell if it's powered on or not just by looking for the dim glow of the backlight on a black screen. So there's been a few times where I didn't realise I hadn't turned it off properly after turning off the camera and killed the battery before I got where I was going. So, now the R5 gets used on my rig here at home (where it's plugged into an AC adapter) and the F6 Plus lives on the setup in this video to go out shooting on location.

John Aldred thanks for the fast reply. And thats certainly a good point. It’s funny I’ve seen other reviewers mention they wish the F6 didn’t have that light as it’s not necessary and just adds to battery drain but it obviously has its benefits in that case. One more question if I may. I was concerned that over time the little snail mount on the R5 would lose its friction and not hold the monitor up anymore, is it possible to tighten the mount if this happens?
@JohnAldred
@JohnAldred 3 года назад
Yeah, there are a couple of bolts there that you can tighten with the right Allen key. I'm pretty sure that's what the one that came with it was for. But, I'd probably look into picking up a SmallRig or Nitze one that's a bit more substantial (and secure, and doesn't fall off the hotshoe, haha).

Hi, question please I have a g7 and I know I can not connect an external monitor to it as soon as I click on the player I do not see anything on the monitor, my question is if in the g85 I want to upgrade you can use the monitor even when you click on Play and something else in the g7 can not connect Headphones also in g85. Can I connect headphones to the monitor but not record the video on the monitor? Thank you
@JohnAldred
@JohnAldred 3 года назад
Ahh, yeah, with the G80/85, when you hit record you can still see it on the monitor. That's the main reason I went for the G80 over the G7. And, yup, it sends out audio over the HDMI, so you can plug headphones into the monitor. :)

Good job! My monitor Feelworld F6 5.7 starts buzzing after the battery Sony NP-F970 is drained to 80%. Why do you think this is happening? And can I connect a microphone Rode VideoMicro if a lock SmallRig 1822 is installed? Thanks!
@JohnAldred
@JohnAldred 3 года назад
That's odd about the buzzing. I'm not sure what's going on there. I've got Feelworld F6 Plus, FW279 and FH7 monitors, but haven't had that issue with any of them. I'd suggest reaching out to Feelworld to see what they say. You should be able to connect the microphone no problem (I had the same issue at first), but you'd need to flip the cable clamp over. If you check out my video for the Synco Mic-D30, you can see how I did that there. I basically just removed the screw, flipped the whole thing over and mounted it the opposite way around. :)

@@JohnAldred Thank you very much for your response. I didn't find any information about installing the lock anywhere. The support service Feelworld advised to buy a new monitor) The monitor is new, I didn't use it, but the 1-year warranty is over. I'm probably the only one with this problem) Here's the video yadi.sk/i/kjPbtBeu1aSVQg

Oh wow, that's pretty loud! That's a strange one. I've not heard of that happening before. I wonder what component is actually making the noise. Is there a speaker inside that model? If it's just speaker buzz, have you tried turning the volume off completely?

Hii John thx for video. I have Panasonic GX85, can i use it (Smallrig 1950) for my camera ?
@JohnAldred
@JohnAldred 2 года назад
No, for the GX85 you'd need the 1828 cage. Unfortunately, it looks like SmallRig doesn't make either the 1828 or 1950 cages anymore. You can try reaching out to them to see if they have any old stock left or you probably want to hit up eBay. :)

Did you ever find out why your dummy battery wasn't working? Is the 8v from the monitor not actually outputting 8v? Or other low voltage issues?
@JohnAldred
@JohnAldred 3 года назад
I never did find out why. I forgot all about it if I'm completely honest, haha. I do remember having the same issue with a different monitor, but those are the only two devices I have had any issues with. I never did take my multimeter to those sockets, though, to see if they're actually 8v. Will leave myself a note to remind me. :)

@@JohnAldred I just found a video that shows that the cam will shut off and show the error when voltage drops below 8.27, so the voltage from the dc might be on the verge since np-f batteries are 7.2/7.4 normal and 8.2/8.4fully charged. A solution is to add an resistor to the dummy battery, search in youtube for video Ti0KRKT4tcc that will show you the voltages.
@JohnAldred
@JohnAldred 3 года назад
Thanks, John, much appreciated! Will check with a multimeter what the DC output is exactly on these monitors when I get chance.

is camera feeding signal while recording?
@JohnAldred
@JohnAldred 3 года назад
Yup, you can record and see the camera's view on both the built-in LCD and externally on a monitor all at the same time. That's the main reason I went for G80 bodies instead of the G7. :)
