Thank you for being so honest about how long it can take for a parrot to bond. I've seen some of the training videos that make it look like you bring a parrot home and 6 hours later it's rolling over and playing dead. It makes you start questioning yourself and your bird. I've also stopped babying my bird as much and pushing her a little since watching your videos. It's working out really well.

Awesome! Yeah, I like feeling like people have a chance at bonding- by expecting it to take time. Glad things are going well with your shy girl 😀 Have you considered joining the membership? I think you’d like our discord group 😀

Yeahhh...I have two budgies that I got over a year ago, and even though I consistently work with them and don't push them to do things they don't want to do, they're still barely hand-tame. And I've watched a lot of those training videos you mentioned. I'm happy for people who are able to train their birds that fast, but a lot of it really is down to individual birds, too. I've had some birds that became comfortable with hands fairly quickly. Not these two though. 😂

I have a wonderful Caquie (1 and half years). She was with our friends, when we were on holidays. It look like she has forgotten us in one month. I am missing the attention that she gave me before. I hope she will be same again in few months.

Fabulous info Kalyn! When my son got his 1st parrot which was a lovebird, the breeder had a pair of caiques. They were playing and fighting with each other and we were like, I don't think we could ever handle one of those! 6 years later we got our amazing, rascally Amazon, who we couldn't be happier with! Luckily there are so many great RU-vidrs (like you, of course!) who've shared so much helpful info like what's in this video so that we know how to handle his BIG personality!

That’s awesome! I live that you obviously work with your Amazon, makes all the difference. Is your Amazon loud?

@@ParrotBliss thank u :) Yes - we work with him a lot on appropriate behavior and he's learned what be gentle and don't break it mean 😊 We also do some training. And a funny thing we reinforce - he wants endless cuddles before going into his sleeping cage at night and we'll often cuddle him for quite a while. It's made him cuddlier in general 😁 He's not usually loud. His sounds are very pleasant and make our home feel happy :) We have music on for him when he's in the aviary or a cage and he likes to whistle or sing with the music 💞 If we don't have music on he's more likely to get bored and start being loud. Also, if he gets hungry in his aviary he'll start getting loud. (He doesn't like going in to eat in the cage we have inside the aviary to help reduce the food mess, although he's fine eating on the play top. Also, because of some of my kids' severe wheat allergies we feed our birds Harrison's allergy formula in the great room. We usually supplement by giving him chop and some grains on the playtop on the cage inside the aviary that he LOVES. We give him some chop and grains usually every few hours and a couple of almonds (that I put inside the smaller cage in the aviary) and that usually keeps him happy :) If he can hear us having fun elsewhere in the house when he's in the aviary or big cage in our great room he'll get really loud. Sometimes he and our pionus have fun yelling back and forth with each other, but it's maybe a few times a week for 20 min or something. Our Amazon (and pionus) is also quiet in the morning! We're so lucky 🍀 !!! (We can sleep in if we want!) We hand raised our Amazon from the time he was 2 months old, idk if that made a difference? And he was our only parrot at the time, so our house was pretty quiet. Our pionus probably talks more and is probably louder because he had an Amazon older brother, though 😆 They're about 6 months apart.

Hi Kalyn, I've had my black headed Caique for 15 years and he is as good as gold, yeh he gave me a couple of bites when he was very young but now he never ever bites. Yeh he can have a temper tantrum when doesn't get his own way but never to point where he bites. He is very playful and likes a lot of attention ( and he gets it) but he also likes to be stroked and cuddled, he also likes to tuck into my neck or face while ime watching the TV. I have got to add that he (Keetu) was really reacting to the sounds of your bird at about 9 mins and tried biting the phone ! Bless him 😂

I loved this video. So true. Mine all have different personalities. Some will fly off before they’ll bite. Then some will sound like they’re ready to kill. The only one I really have to watch is Ivar. That bird can and will bite. The one time he did bite me, he actually bit through my thumbnail. Since I’ve been target training I can work with him. In fact I had to move him yesterday. I was able to accomplish it by having him step up onto a folded towel. Mostly mine delight in pinching. The biggest thing I notice and would advise people is not to get overly excited around their Caique. I find Caiques heighten very quickly. As you wonderfully brought up, what people see on Instagram and RU-vid is usually do to a lot of interaction and training. In my experience most Caiques will hop. Some just do it more often.❤️❤️❤️

Bit through your thumbnail? Ohhhhhh!
@1hawaii21
@1hawaii21 Год назад
Yes. When he bit, Dean was in the room. It was unprovoked and without warning. His upper beak went through the nail and the lower beak sliced through the fleshy pad of my thumb. I probably should have gone to the ER but I dressed it myself. It took about a month to heal. Anyway, Ivar is still here and he’s a work in progress. He can’t help it. And, we love him even if he is a wacko.

@@1hawaii21 Rescue risk… he can’t help it, makes you wonder what happened in his past. On the other hand, he’s not allowed to do it again! Time heals wounds, but parrots need plenty of time for healing emotional wounds

Thank you! I have a black-headed caique who I adore. He was being rehomed at 2 1/2, and my partner fell in love with him. Since my partner died, my caique, Bertie, has not spoken, but I feel now we are bonded - he has forgiven me for not bring the one who died! He is the reason I get up in the morning and he clings to me and plays with me - he is very sociable and missed people during covid. He rarely draws blood now and it's usually accidental. I feel awful because at one time I worried that I wouldn't be able to cope with him, but he has calmed down so much - he is like a different bird. I no longer-term have any fear and I think this makes a difference. If this bird was not in my life neither would I be - thank you for acknowledging that they are not the easiest of birrds - but when you bond it is SO rewarding!

Wow, Kate, sorry for your loss. Yes, parrots can be life-savers. One thing that happened is that you became more comfortable and confident with Bertie, which allowed him to relax too. For me, parrots can give me a deep, loving bond. It's different than a relationship, but it's amazing because they truly share life's journey with us. Most of life is such that when you go through the fire metaphorically speaking, like you have with Bertie, you change, evolve and grow. So glad you guys have each other. Thank you for posting.

i have question.. what gender is good in caique.. male of female ?
@germainelytle9272

My 21yr old male caique was great with my husband and I, but around 7yrs old, turned on hubby! He is very sensitive to stress, and seems to only trust myself and my one daughter when being outside the cage. We recently lost our big dog to lymphoma, and he overpreened and barbed his feathers! They are coming back nicely now, and he understands the dog is gone. So he is back to annoying and teasing the other dog for entertainment !

Hey Kat, I gotta question I have noticed some grey looking spots on my white bellied caiques stomach and I am not sure if they are starting a molt or if it's from them being outside to long? Any idea what it could be? A few of the white feathers look grey around the chest area
