Although Of Human Bondage is Somerset Maugham's more celebrated novel, the one that he liked the best that he had written was CAKES AND ALE. This is the first part of that most interesting and ironic of novels, with more to come.

Born in Chicago darn near 70 years back. If I live another 30, I shall never possess command of the English language this man had among many others. They were born and raised with it, it just came natural exclamation point
While I enjoy Maugham, stories such as this drive me to distraction. Maugham is so unnecessarily verbose. If your mind should wander while listening, you will lose your way in a mire of adjectives, exhaustively long sentences and endless descriptions of the mundane.
It’s a different type of literature… to be taken in leisurely. I probably will listen to it again… he paints his scenes and characters with precision and exacting detail. Like Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon….
