On this episode of Cal’s Week in Review: In the Field, MeatEater’s Director of Conservation Ryan Callaghan heads to the Zumwalt Preserve, which is 37,000 acres of bunch grass prairie that look like heaven at first glance. Owned and operated by the Nature Conservancy, bow and rifle hunting are used as tools in the elk management plan. Hunters move elk around the prairie to prevent overgrazing and mitigate the presence of invasive weeds. Although Cal is the only hunter on the preserve with a bull tag-open terrain and large wary herds make hunting these elk more like hell. In the end he puts the pieces together and earns it the hard way.

I love that these kind of buddy situations occur all the time when u hunt with truly great people. Just a funny moment but has some great representation of the comradery that comes with hunting with good people. Just being in the woods or back country with great people. A great example of this is Remi Warren and Steve Rinella hunting tahr in New zealand and had to get the kill from across the glacier river. That whole situation was just great to watch them work together as two very passionate individuals about what they love. Its on here check it out.

Cal, I really appreciate what you and Meat Eater did here. The Nature Conservancy is doing really good work. We’re working with them to restore forests that are overgrown that need thinned back to natural levels. I really loved your take: Private, public access, profit, and preservation. It’s nuanced, but we can have it all if we do things intelligently with a balanced approach. We’re doing wonderful things similar to this in Eastern Washington. Thanks guys!

cal I greatly admire your patience man. I have only been bow hunting elk in idaho for 6 years but i feel like the first 5 were just me rushing in to situations with no patience and blowing out areas. you have a really good instinct on when u should let off on the trigger. im only now beginning to realize that sometimes passing on a slim chance will net you a strong chance further into a hunt. love what you do brother its educating as hell

Got to work here for part of a summer while I was with TNC. Truly a special place! This prairie's health is dependent on larger grazers and it can be done with smart cattle ranching or wild ungulate management - TNC was doing both while I was there. A good book about the Zumwalt ecology puzzle, "Prairie Keepers". The area is also changing as corporate operations are buying up nearby family farms and grazing too hard. There are still great farms that you can support by buying their beef direct like 6 Ranch. I've been trying to get a tag for the Zumwalt for years now, one of these days...

8:10 that's funny. I went on my first deer hunt 3 years ago with a very good friend (who at the time was someone I barely knew, he knew I was going hunting alone, and asked if I wanted company), anyways trying to get my mulie out of a coulee I fell backwards onto a prickly pear cactus and later he ended up having to pull the spines out of my right arse cheek, "Let's not tell anyone about that" he says. We laugh our heads off about it now. So Cal... I know that feeling.

Thanks for sharing this story. I know there was more to the backstory of the how the bull laid to his final resting point. And I appreciate they way it summarize in this film to focus on conservation side of this story. Lets face it hunting is not always clean and either is nature its nice to see the human side of this. Hope for better luck in the next encounter and may your skills be sharper.

Can’t imagine what a weekend of shed hunting would be like in there
@georgeprice870
@georgeprice870 4 года назад
You bet ! EXCEPT no one is allowed to shed hunt on TNC - they "talk the talk" BUT they "lock the lock" when it comes to access to hunt - there's a nickname for TNC bulls … "TNC bulls" because midway through EVERY season their racks are so broken up from the bunching that their racks are in sad state - TNC is able to purchase these properties because of "joint venture contributions" which is "supposed" to include hunting access which doesn't happen …. they auction off 4 or 5 bull tags every year and that is IT ….. look all you want (from outside the fences), take pictures …. if you want to hunt you had best have DEEEP POCKETS - TNC needs to be held accountable for all the PUBLIC FUNDS from ODFW and RMEF they receive and then do not reciprocate with "agreed" access
@georgeprice870
@georgeprice870 4 года назад
AND don't even get me started on the ODFW - they have an elk biologist for that area that knows more than any 10 "hunter/conservationists" will ever know but do you thing those in Salem listen to him ? not much …. and conducting counts with a HELICOPTER ?? "little joe" knows more about counting elk than anyone around but NOOO, Oregon "needs" to do their aerial counts with a HELICOPTER ….. the "ODFW" first count revealed "0" elk (???) this past weekend there were 1094 elk counted (FROM THE GROUND), and 692 of those were on ONE ranch ….. (no wonder the locals are stirred up)
@odis1115
@odis1115 4 года назад
George Price I don’t doubt it... It’s a beautiful spectacle of an “untouched” ecosystem, but as with all over the west the idea of managing healthy herds has been thrown by the wayside so the fish and game departments can make a quick buck. It really is an unfortunate situation.
