Here in Finland is summer at its greatest and this song is perfect for nightless nights and bright days. I just go dancing every time I listen to this no matter where I am
So much love for Cal Tjader. In addition to his talent as a vibraphonist, drummer, and pianist (his wife was also an excellent pianist), Cal had a knack for picking stellar sidemen. Of course, my favorite quintet of his was when he had Mongo on conga and Willie Bobo on timbales, with Al McKibbon on bass and Vince Guaraldi at the piano - does it get any better? But this 1970 outing was also super hip, with the Escovedo brothers, Pete and Coke on percussion, along with conguero Michael Smithe. Cal was truly one of a kind and is sorely missed!
Chris Velour Older Musician Confirm What You Just Stated About Cal's Drumming And Piano Playing Back In The 70's!!!!!!! He Was Originally According To Them Station In New York And As His Latin Influence In Music Progress Californians Ask Him To Relocate There, Which He Did And Some Say Bringing Willie Bobo And Mongo With Him!!!!!!! Also He Was Only 1 Of 2 Men Who Bought The " First" Electric Piano Back In 50's Or Later But Had To Return Them Because It Was'nt Perfected Yet( Until Fender Rhodes Came Along)!!!!!!! And Yes My Older Musician Friends Stated Cal Would Go " Wild" With His Drums And Even The Piano A Little Bit!!!!!!! As You Know That's Him Switching From Vibes To Organ And Back Again!!!!!!! Go Tjader, Jam On In " Heaven" And May You Rest In " Power"!!!!!!!🌬👌🏾👍🏼👊🏾😮✊🏿☯🕉🛐☮🙏🏾🎹🌅🌄🏙🌇🌆🌃🌌🌉
lord eldauoud WOW! Listening this time, I was wondering who was playing the organ so masterfully-such a great groove going on. Your post says it’s Cal watching from vibes to organ and back. I just love this! It would be BLISS for me to see a video of this recording.☺️
Harriet Johnson Attn: Harriet I Agree With You 200%!!!!!!! I Always Like To Think That When He Switch From Vibes To Organ Playing In The Middle Of This Bad Jam, He Just Threw The Sticks " Up In The Air" And Went To Heaven On That Organ!!!!!!!😱🌬☯👊🏾😊

The title of this track matches the look in Cal's eyes in that cover photo. "I Showed 'Em". Nuff said. Cal does it yet again!!!! So tasty, so cool...!!
YES THIS IS CAL TJADER 1ST BEGAN TO PLAY HIS STUFF IN 1968 I WAS 20 THIS GUY ALONG WITH WES MONTGOMERY GOT ME GOIN ON J A Z Z BIG TIME JAZZ IS, WAS, AND ALWAYS WILL BE THANKS
Cal was raised in San Mateo, California where his mother was a piano teacher and his father a tap dancer. After a stint in the Army, Cal first went to San Jose State and then San Francisco State where he met Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond. He was playing drums at the time and became the drummer, not only with the Dave Brubeck Octet, but several Fantasy albums of Daves. In 1954 he moved to the George Shearing Quintet playing vibes and precussions. Al McKibbon introduced him to Latin jazz. He fell in love with it and for the next twenty-eight years lead bands not only playing straight-ahead jazz but latin as well. (Tito Puente attributed him to being the biggest "gringo" influence on latin music. As a sidenote, he was attributed to making the Montery Jazz Festival a success, being the opening act for the second festival. I loved Cal Tjader's music almost from the moment I first heard him. His vibe playing was quickly identifible because it was always melodotic and tasteful. He recorded two albums playing piano, but, again you knew it was Cal by the way he put music together. When he passed away, I was personally crushed; I had gotten to know him, as well as Vince Lateano, Poncho Sanchez, Tito Puente and Vince Guaraldi briefly. When Cal passed away, I was stunned. He has been sorely missed for the last thirty-six years. I often wonder how much more beautiful music he would have produced if he were still alive.
John Mueller John You Forgot To Mention That's Him" Cal Tjader" Playing That Bad A___s Organ Solo And Then He Switch's Back To Vibes And Organ!!!!!!! Boy He Was And Still Is Bad!!!!!!!😊🙏🏾👊🏾👌🏾🌬👍🏼✊🏿
These are the details of History I appreciate thank you for posting. The son of roaming vaudevillian performers that settled in San Mateo and opened the music school and that launched young man to San Francisco State like you said where he met the key people and then he fell in love with Latin jazz and brought all of the greatest musicians to the world's forefront and then some criticized him saying this swedish boy of immigrants doesn't know nothing but he really showed us something
I have always enjoyed this track by Tjader..It was one of my favorites growing up in LA in the mid to l'ate 60's,along with 'The Phantom 'by the late Duke Pearson and 'Asphalt Canyon Suite and 'Chitlins Con Carne' by Kenny Burrell
I discovered this cut in high school in 1972. Ran out and bought the album--still got it. With it I first learned about the vibes. It wowed me then same as now. Sooooooooooooooo good! Do it Cal!!

1970 out of high school wchd also know as wjzz played this for the first time Marvin cherry was the dj I was of the first to request this tune. Solidify my belief Buddhism, Egyptian magic, occult beliefs, eastern mysticism.

I agree - I started to listen to KBCA in the late 50's / early 60's when it was KNOB (the "Jazz Knob" out of Long Beach State) to get my Coltrane fix - KBCA had my all-time favorite DJ, the late great Ken Jones - "KEEP ENJOYING THE SOUNDS OF JAZZ"
Chuck had the great voice - he was good also - the only other one I can remember was Jay Rich - I think the reason I liked Ken Jones was his theme song was one of my all time favorites - Green Dolphin Street by The Three Sounds (who I saw in the early 60's at a club on Los Feliz Blvd. in L.A. just below The Greek Theater_ - Thanks for the response - "KEEP ENJOYING THE SOUNDS OF JAZZ"

I killed everything in Vietnam while listening to this on one of those new things I purchased in Hong Kong. I think it was called an 8-Track Tape Player. Ooorah!!!
Thank you very much for posting this particular track. I used to live in Detroit and the popular jazz station, WJZZ, would play this every now and then. I immediately liked it
@alfacar54 Hey Man, my brother and I went NUTS over Wes Montgomery- bought "Incredible Jazz Guitar LP" new off the shelf - shortly after that discovered Cal. That was our education in jazz- been playing for almost six decades now. Aren't we lucky to have found these two masters when in our youth! Keep on my friend. You have good taste!
My bad the dj name of wchd/wjzz here in Detroit was Martin Douglass/when he first played this tune, I thought is was going to wind down to a slow nothing/then lord Buddha face flash before my eyes/Amen-Ra
Got loads of MFSB in this, so I presume MFSB copied him, lol, both fantastic bands, and yes, I know Cal played with about a zillion different session musicians, all were too notch in their own right, only dude that died younger than him, and was the best artist ever to grace the planet, JIMI HENDRIX, but Cal was cool, and yes, their both American, so we know where the coolest musicians on the planet come from.
