Here we are planting out some plants of Calabrese. Calabrese is the vegetable that you find in the supermarket under the name of broccoli. The difference between this and broccoli is that calabrese has a milder taste and is grown to crop in the same year, whereas purple sprouting and white sprouting broccoli is planted out in mid summer for cropping the following spring. Calabrese is a member of the brassica family and needs the same growing conditions as cabbages and the other brassicas. Manure the soil in winter and leave on over the winter. In spring fork or rotavate the manure in and a couple of weeks before planting out rake in a general purpose fertilizer at the rate of 60gms/sq.m. Brassicas like a limey soil so if your soil is on the acid side be prepared to add lime to bring the pH up to 7. With brassicas, such as sprouts, which are in the ground for a long growing period a feed half way through with a high nitrogen feed is recommended. In this video we are fixing root collars to the small plants to stop any grubs of the cabbage root fly climbing down the stem and eating the roots. This is a preventative measure that applies to all brassicas as the cabbage root fly lays its eggs on the stem of the plant and the grubs climb down to eat the roots after they hatch. enjoy your greens.

I like that it is explained that it isn't actually broccoli and then at the end she just decides to write broccoli on the label anyway.
