I have two lovely 60+ year old Pieris Japonicas that are relatively carefree and bloom beautifully every spring, but my soil is highly alkaline -- "too alkaline" per the soil testers.
I am looking at your Limestone Wall and see that you are so lucky to have red Valerian. Here in Lancashire we have Acid (Clay) soil which will kill it stone dead.
The easiest way to treat an infestation is to immerse the entire leaf area in a bucket with a solution of washing up liquid and warm water for a few hours. Rinse with a shower head/hose very thoroughly and that should do the trick.
