Calculate Total Seconds in Microsoft Excel (cc)

I learned solutions to several things that have always bugged me. The only thing that could have made it better would been to have elaborated on the brackets. So, I have data taken off of a separate program. The time, in minutes, is formatted as hours in excel. The 4:01 is read as 4:01 AM in excel and it's actually 4:01 minutes into a session. I need this to read as 240 seconds and I am failing at this. can anyone help?

I appreciate the clarity of this video, however even if I do exactly as instructed here, my excell comes up with something different, I'm fed up.

Thanks for showing me the [ss] in cell formatting. What if I want the result to show ss.ss ie 2 decimal place for seconds? I tried using [ss.ss] or [ss.00] it does not work. I want to convert 2:03.45 (2 minutes 03.45 seconds) to seconds. The result I am expecting is 123.45. How do you do it? Please advise.

this doesn't seem to be a good example of lapsed seconds. You just converted minutes and seconds to all seconds (I think). Maybe you should have used a different example where the hour wasn't zero because that confused me. I'm trying to convert actual time (as in on the clock) that is on an excel spreadsheet in a long column of time stamps, and convert that to a column of the total time elapsed from time zero (time in the first cell) in each subsequent cells (time stamp, converted to total time from start, in minutes or seconds). I know there must be a simple way but I con't figure out. THought this video would do that from the title, but doesn't actually - or it might but the example given didn't explain it well enough for me.
