That's what I love about hockey and part of what makes it so much better than other sports. He was named playoff MVP, took an "official" picture with the trophy, then immediately skates it over to the bench and hands it off. Didn't raise it or anything. Hockey is about the team, not the individual player.
I almost feel bad for Makar at this point Stanley Cup, Calder, Norris, Conn Smythe, Hobey Baker all at only 23 I guarantee that in 2 or 3 years people will talking about how he's "regressed" simply because this kind of success is impossible to maintain or outdo.
I remember raging when the Avs lost the draft lottery after having one of if not the worst seasons in NHL history. Who knew that pick would end up winning a Conn Smythe and becoming a franchise changing defenseman.
and yeah just comparing to the guys drafted ahead of them, nothing against hischier and heiskanen who have both developed into really effective guys but not even in the same conversation as makar
I was also absolutely furious after we got “screwed” in that draft lottery, and also in 2019 when we could have had #1 overall. How wrong we all were and I couldn’t be happier for Cale!!
I remember how excited I was when he came straight to the Avs from the NCAA Championship game and scored on his first NHL shot! Then he went on to win the Calder, and within a week won the Norris, Conn Smythe and Stanley Cup!! This dude is so special. I can’t wait to see what else comes!! Let’s go Avs!!!
Keep ur head high Tampa. It took 3 tries at the SCF to be taken out. 2 great teams. It was Colorados year regardless of how bad I wanted Tampa to win. Congrats to them and their fanbase. Makar is fking insane
I’m fairly new in the hockey world, though I’ve rooted for the Avs all my life with my dad being from near Denver (even though I grew up in Vegas, didn’t switch allegiances when they entered the league). I’m just a few months older than Cale, and wow I respect him so much. Great player, and more importantly, a good man. I appreciate his humility, focus, and calm demeanor on top of his skill. Well deserved!
Imagine Colorado "lost" the draft lottery in 2017 after their record losing season with the best chance of drafting #1 overall and lost out on Nolan Patrick and Nico Hischier. 5 years later they got a cup and a playoff MVP out of it.
I remember running into Makar's coach at a Avalanche game before he was even in the NHL. The guy expressed that the level of talent this kid has is like nothing you've seen before, and he talked as if he was a legend before he even joined the team. I knew immediately he was telling the truth when I watched him score a goal on his first NHL game ever in the playoffs! Truly amazing
If he stays Healthy enough, we got probably one of the best offensive defenseman of all time, he could be another great Team Canada great for 10-15 years to come.
Congrats to Cale. I'm sure Cale will be taking the Stanley Cup to his home town as soon as the parade is over in Denver Thursday. To me he looks like he has a few injuries he has been dealing with. Calgary take care of the best player in the NHL this post season.
When will the NHL learn. If a player's scouting report is perfect but he's 5'10" that is NOT a reason to let him pass by. Good on the Avs for drafting a generational defenseman.
Let's be real, Of all 5'10" - 6' players, how many are as agile and astute as Cale Makar? Probably in the 0.00001% range. He's in another dimension regardless of size.
Well deserved. I'm glad he's on my team as in the AVS 🤔🤣🙌. Even down to the last 8 seconds of play he was giving everything he had n fighting for the puck💯. I've been there in a different but similar capacity. Zero quit, hold nothing back and perform like ur life depends on it... Infantryman Vet 🇺🇲 🦾
@@Connor8609 Never said he wasn't. Was just simply saying his 2-way playing reminded me of Keith. Considering how much hockey he has left to play, I've no doubts Makar will surpass his accolades.
And Makar was drafted 4th overall in the 2017 draft , looking who got drafted ahead of him I can say without taking away from hischier, Patrick and Heiskanen , the Avs got the best talent in that year
Eric Johnson was a number 1 pick overall, but he can't do what makar does. Plus makar was number 4 after attaining that pick from a trade and thinking the avs got screwed over by the draft lottery. You just never know how these things turn out
The only person arguable to Makar for this is obviously McDavid, but when they played each other, Makar looked better in the plays against McDavid than McDavid did vs Makar. Its so obvious Makar is the MVP of the cup winning team. Without his defensive skill (not even considering his offense) the avs wouldn't even be holding the cup.
I smell 2017 NHL Re- draft. So far Makar takes overall top pick. To think he essentially fell on the Avs lap. If there are at least 3 players at this moment that teams would RFA Offer sheet, this kid will be on the top list. 😭
When the Avs drafted this kid putting up numbers but playing BELOW the WHL major junior hockey ranks in his draft year, I was somewhat skeptical as I believe a kid getting picked in the top 4 should be playing at least if not dominating major junior hockey in his draft year.
He couldn't play Major Junior without losing NCAA eligibility & he'd already committed to accept a full-ride at UMass. And since very kid matures differently, nobody knows now how long it will take for a draft pick to be NHL-ready. Why take that risk? Major Junior means you've gotta be ready to go in the AHL by age 20 AT THE LATEST. Conversely you could play junior A until 20 then play 5 years of NCAA D1 if you needed it (4 years eligibility + 1 redshirt season). That's just a much better decision for many kids IMO & will become the default choice for top prospects as time goes on.
Unpopular opinion and little bit finnish biased, but Lehkonen should have gotten that with 4 playoff gwg (most in these playoff) and 2 of them were final games gwg and ofc most important was this last goal of the whole season
@@beneaton6765 I can accept that argue as the trophy goes to player who mvp to his team and not the mvp of whole playoff, but still 2 massive goals in the end for Lehkonen
Sometimes you just gotta be a NHL posterboy and be likeable to win it seems.. Makar did great don't get me wrong, but i do not think for one second he was MVP entire playoffs LET ALONE his team... Nichuskin/Palat/McDavid ( Even after getting knocked out was still somewhat deserving of the trophy because of his UNHOLY plays) But i'm leaning the most towards Nichuskin when i think about it because he just came in so CLUTCH with his goals... not secondary assists or whatever 29 points 20 games yadayada, just big game player Valeri! Anyways, doubt they care tbh they own the cup! Just my 2 cents as a Ranger fan watching these playoffs
