How can I love these horrific flowers, while they kill all around them in the most bloody ways, trees, humans, animals! ...I did respond that to me they are not violent and graphic, wonder or they will put it back to the top... I am in California, 7 years ago we were in a long drought, I dug up my lawn and replaced it with poppy, calendula, and lavender. The calendula reseeds every year. My front yard is a birds and bees heaven.
Ana is one of the best additions to Epic Gardening. She needs a full channel (or to have content every week on EG!!!) - I want to learn all the things about herbal uses for plants now. She really broadens the information and adds robustness to Epic Gardening. Your content channel-wide has really become well-rounded and I love all aspects of it but have definitely found myself checking more and more for new Ana content recently :)
Last year, I grew some and in the fall I infused some olive oil with the flowers. Today, my granddaughter was here with some allergic reaction, with a rash that was itchy. I had her put some of the calendula oil on it - and within a few minutes, the itching had stopped … my first wow story with the calendula! And then I come online and this video is the first thing I see! Huh!
I love this channel because of the information that comes with it. Most people: Grow this. Kevin: Grow this because its history talks about calendars and lunar months and shows how it can be used in a variety of ways to benefit health and wellness. Or just have something really pretty to look at. Here are some more benefits! A, B, C, D, etc... The informative and historical side of this channel is a breed of its own. Well done sir.
I grow Calendula Officinalis all over. I make oils, healing salve and lip balm. You can eat the flower. They are coming up now. I only plant one per hole and leave space in between because they get huge. One year I planted them too close and they got powdery mildew. I also make sure now to only water the base of the plant. I love them. They are my favorite.

I grew caledula last year for the 1st year and many plants shockingly survived the winter! I live in northern Utah (zone 6b) so they aren't supposed to survive winter. These aren't plants that reseeded too (I have some that have though and they are seedlings now) these are the same plants I planted last year that didn't bloom. Some of the leaves were yellow due to snow being on them but they survived and are healthy now!
So cool, you should definitely save seeds from those flowers! I had a similar experience with my pansies and violets that I planted last fall. They are tough flowers and will often survive as long as January, but this is the first time they survived the entire winter. Zone 6A, upstate NY. I think it is possibly because we got more rain than snow this year. Now that spring is in full swing, they are lush and pumping out beautiful flowers, while the rest of the garden is either coming out of dormancy or just getting going.
Calendula are cool flowers, they grow best when the temps are not too hot. Cooler climates may get away with growing them into the summer... But down there in z9b Texas, they are a winter flower. I direct sow them in October and typically get my first flower in late December. By mid May, they will be on the struggle bus because my climate is just too hot for them. They are amazing self seeders if you let them go to seed.
Zone 6, Ohio, Mine did fine until an ice storm, the parts under the fallen leaves were fine, but I pulled them, and seeds popped up in the beds and sidewalk cracks!
I do the same and find direct sowing the seed to work great for me in Zone 9b. If you buy one packet of seed you will never have to buy another one. Not good for Botanical Interests, but great for us frugal gardeners.
Just got a ton of Botanical Interest seed packs for my wedding favors! Our theme is a Midsummer Night’s Dream and thought they would go very well. I loved the illustrations on the packets and you know one of them had to be calendula too!
I just can't get enough of Ana and her medicinals! Every time I see her show how easy it is to make things I want to rush out and start planting. My biggest concern is where to get the oils & waxes, etc. if SHTF & stores are out.
I will always hold a special place in my heart for Calendula.. It was one if rhe first plants to volunteer itself as a pioneer when I helped with the Bloomin Nature project in the High Desert. There was nothing growing in the spot we dug out and installed the irrigation at first but we started with some non-native and native seeds, one of which was Orange King Calendula and my did it flourish.... The same patch survived for 3 YEARS and adapted in to a few different varieties because of the biome. It re-seeded and gave new looking blooms each time. Id never gardened or had any experience before but it felt like I was rewarded from our efforts with all the flora that came up during those few years, including the sunflower and bee balm seeds just randomly scattered in the dry swales. It was like a miracle and brought so many birds and insects 😭
In northern England, where it can get pretty cold, Calendula is a very reliable germinator outdoors. If you're running out of space indoors for all your seed sowing, I highly recommend Calendula as a straight outdoors sowing
Calendula infused oil is great for preventing stretch marks from pregnancy. I learned this from a midwife at The Farm in TN. And it worked for my wife for her three pregnancies 👍
You can use calendula as an antibacterial! My dog had an infection and I was able to get him all better with a calendula paste. Whew! So glad I found it! I’ll definitely grow this next season
so funny, after years of permiculture and annual gardening I have also became a lover of growing flowers. I was once in the mindset "if i cant eat it i wont grow it" as well. Once you see how beutiful flowers on vegtables can be it warms you to the thought of just planting flowers for flowers. it must be a natural gardener evolution. We have a few caledulas growing as well. We also have sunflowers, Delphinas, echinacea, marigolds, and a few more. Great Video thank you
I was the same! I only wanted edible plants at first. But my dad taught me how important it is to attract pollinators! I am very lucky to have a neighbour who loves to grow flowers, but without her, my harvests would probably be much lower! Dad got me some flowers that are somewhat edible. Chamomile, Calendula, Lavender, and Echinacea. All of them can be used for tea, some for baking, and after I learned to make infusions, I can use them all for beauty products or herbal medicine! My strawberries have a much better shape since planting flowers, and my tomatoes have doubled in numbers per plant! (I don't prune them) my berry bushes have more fruits too! Plus, they're pretty to look at, and a wonderful gift (bouquet) in a pinch! I'm never again growing only vegetables/fruit. Flowers have to be in the mix!
The flowers are beautiful. I liked the video. After I was left wondering what a mere mortal like myself would do with it. The multi step preparation of skin products is interesting, but please start with some simple options for those of us with lower aspirations.

This video was awesome! I just started watching your channel about a month ago and really enjoy your videos. They are short and sweet, and filled with information that is easy to understand and easy to apply in the garden! I was so happy when I saw that this video was up because I just started making my own hand salve from the lavender I have growing in my garden and wanted to move on to calendula. I loved the second part of the video where making homemade products was included. A really great idea for future videos :) I would love to learn more about what one can do with herbs after they are harvested 😊
This video has great timing. My Calendula is starting to bloom, so I can start to harvest them. I have some infused oil that I use in balms and lotions. It's also a nice herbal tea and can be used in soap.

I brought home a sad little seedling for Mother’s Day in 1996 and my mom put it in the garden more to make me happy than expecting anything would come from it. Calendulas took over our entire garden bed and starting spreading into our grass! Took years to get under control, long before my gardening days but I need to add some to my yard this year. I’m in zone 6a/b Southern Ontario Canada and they came back year after year despite being listed as annual in our region.
I'm growing Calendula for the first time. Pink Calendula. I used the winter milk jug method, they're all waking up and the biggest hit about four inches tall so far.

Thank you for this great video which is very info-heavy! The petals are stunning on salads very waistline friendly. But they also make nice treats when dipped in honey😋. This time of year has loads of edible plants - nasturtium (fab for pesto!!!). Dandelion is everywhere in the UK, I need to find a 🐕-free place, practically IMPOSSIBLE🤨, so I can take advantage of the whole plant and make caffeine free coffee from its roots.... I love the idea of calendula oil👍, I will try it

I'm in z9b (Houston), and calendula are a winter flower for us. They are considered a cool flower, so they grow best in cool conditions. I plant mine in October, have flowers by late December, and the plants start to struggle/succumb to pests by mid May -- depending on how early we get hot. Northerners may be able to have cool enough nights to stretch into the summer with calendula. They are amazing re-seeders.
Love it. It’s a must for me. I’m growing your BI Zeolights this year, I grew a rusty colored one last year that had a ton of variation from one flower to the next, and I’ll be growing the official herbal one next. I’d love to try them all! Thankfully most things tend to leave them alone too.
I struggled with calendula because of many things like my tropical climate, bothersome pests, and unruly children pulling them out. If you live in a tropical climate like I do, you should plant yours in part shade, otherwise they will be stunted. I have the Zen Gold variety if that helps.

I grew last yr 1st time, it was pretty, easy no fuss, I saved some seed, but also noticed it has reseeded itself already! What I hope is that it doesn't work so much as a "trap crop" this year, I didnt know until recent weeks, it is an epic trap crop to keep aphids off other things. It was COVERED, but none of my veg had any. So that's a win.
I haven't bought Calendula seeds for over 18 years. The flower has traveled with me wherever I have moved. I sow it almost everywhere in my garden. I use it mixed in olive oil to apply to dry, damaged skin with bruising or cuts. It's good for insect bites and sunburn too. I adore this orange little helper. Last year I found a few flowers that had more of an apricot color among my other plants. I saved seeds from them and I'm curious to see if they will come up the same color.
EXCELLENT for skin health. Mine are infusing in oil from last years harvest. Avocado oil is an excellent carrier - great for skin and hair. If you are using heat, which I do for better extraction over the six week period, be sure flowers are bone dry and use a garden seed mat set to NO HIGHER than 70 F. After your infusion you can add jojoba or any other oil to your recipe to enhance skin care properties for your skin type. Fantastic with other infused oils like curly dock, dandelion and other skin aids for cream, salves even facial toners. Make your own vinegar with water cane sugar and calendula add pansies, rosemary (great for hair growth) or anything else good for the hair, add 1 part to 4 parts water and use it as a hair rinse after your shampoo. So many uses. From skin issues like psoriasis and burns, to simple moisturizing.
