Session Notes:
I looked at google maps because I wanted to go exploring and I found a gorgeous area to fish in Valley Ridge in NW Calgary Northwest on the Bow River. It was a beautiful new spot with some nice stretches of super fishy water, I checked out some awesome runs, had 2-3 bites, and landed a beautiful 14" brown trout. I encourage everyone to go explore new areas because it can be very rewarding! Be safe out there, especially during snow melt run-off season, the Bow River can be very dangerous!

Enjoy Vancouver! Hit the Fraser River, Chilliwack area up to Hope. Or the Vedder Canal/Chilliwack River. Totally different fishing, you will need a heavier spin caster rod for the Chinook and Coho salmon.

Ya my brother lives in Chilliwack and September and October coho and chinook fishing is a blast . It gets busy but stay away from the gong shows and find a secluded spot on the river with a bit of exploring. Also its an odd year so the pinks be running in September I believe.

Thanks for your bow river videos. Great location reference and commentary. I've used your valleyridge location with similar success ( one fish in 2.5 hours), but its only a 15 minute drive, where as fish creek was 45 minutes. Sorry you had to relocate! All the best in the future.

Hey Paul! Thanks for letting me know it has been helpful for you! And that you got into a fish in the NW, that's tough to do 😉 It's Ok, there is plenty to explore here and I'll tell you a secret noone else knows yet... I bought an 8 weight rig today!!!!! Pressure is now on to figure out the Salmon game, which is a tier or two higher than the Bow River nymph game! Wish me luck!! And good luck with future Bow River monster browns 🙂

I want to wish you all the best on your new adventures. I started fly fishing when I was 40, so like 18 years ago. I started in the Ottawa Valley catching Bass. I recommend finding an area inland and hook a few bass as well. Might be interesting to start "X" ing off the different species you have caught and the ones you want to catch. Again, best of luck.

Thanks Jim, this is one of those hobbies where it doesn't matter how old you are, it will hook you in all the same! I haven't fished for bass since I was a kid in the eastern US on vacation. Maybe I'll use that idea of a fish checklist in my content moving forward! Hope it isn't too many skunks before the first fish! 🙂

Use to love fishing up at the Dam, there was some big bad ass fish hanging around up there. Lets get the Steelhead fishing going !! no Skunks Rosin, i want you doing Heli portable steelhead fishing on the Dean River and Skeena River with daily up dates.
@RosinFlyFishing
@RosinFlyFishing 3 года назад
Haha I need at least a dozen skunks in a row before catching fish, you know that!! Wish I had more time to explore the Bow. But daily Heli steelhead fishing the summit lakes of every mountain peak with two-a-day videos is only a fair trade 😎

Good luck in Vancouver! Curious why you wear the nitrile gloves, for yourself or the fish? I've been wearing them lately due to developing a fish allergy. Certain species will give me hives if I touch them.
@RosinFlyFishing
@RosinFlyFishing 3 года назад
Hey David! It started for me to keep my hands warm and dry in winter. I've stopped using them now in Vancouver, I just got into a habit in Calgary :). But I do think they are as good as hands when wet for handling fish, I've never had slime on my wet gloves after handling trout!
@johnprudence9167

I’ve watched several of your videos and whenever you hook a fish, you are constantly whipping your rod from right to left while playing it!…what is with that, why do you feel the need to do that? I have been flyfishing for 68 years and have never done this and have never seen anyone else do this in all those years. I get angry every time, which spoils an otherwise enjoyable watching experience. If you really care about the fish, then think about how this affects it, having its head whipped from side to side. My grandfather always taught me to visualize what is happening under the water while fishing and how your actions affect the fish and their reactions. Smooth and gentle and you will never lose a fish even using barbless hooks, which I have also used for 68 years. Good luck in Vancouver! So much more diversity in BC with regard to fishing, be sure to enjoy it all!
@RosinFlyFishing
@RosinFlyFishing 3 года назад
Hi John, first let me say that I appreciate the patience you are showing me. I can see how this would be very frustrating to observe and it's something I've been noticing more myself. I think the reason I started developing this habit was after reading about keeping the line tight and playing the fish in the opposite direction it is running in order to keep it on and in control. As I started employing the technique of applying opposite pressure to gain control I believe I developed this habit of very fast movements to immediately play every directional change, and I think it has gotten worse and more abrupt over time. I agree that it is important to think about what is happening to the fish and I haven't been doing that enough in all aspects of my fishing. I appreciate your comments and I think you hit home on something that I was perhaps subconsciously aware of but not conciously considerate of. Perhaps as a new fisher I have been more focused on landing the fish than how I landed the fish. Thank you for calling me out while being patient and supportive, I think that is a difficult thing to do! I'm looking forward to Vancouver, to the fishing diversity, and to continuing to improve my fishing skills and ethics. I know that the next fish and the fish after that as I play them on the line I will remember your words and work to improve. Thanks for keeping me honest John. Good luck fishing 🙂

@@RosinFlyFishing First, let me thank you for responding in a very positive way. When I was a very young child I was fortunate to have a grandfather who first of all instructed me in the art of fly fishing, but secondly and more importantly, introduced me to all aspects of observing and appreciating wildlife in the UK. His philosophy was that catching a fish was not necessarily the only objective of a day on the water. It doesn't matter if you don't catch, as long as you learned something! Sometimes, it was more exciting to sit and watch the trout and how they fed off the surface, or cruised sucking in nymphs off the bottom, and then apply that knowledge. When the be all and end all of catching a fish is not as important as you think it is, you relax, you learn and you find catching becomes much easier. I was well taught by a great man and I hope that by passing on this little piece of knowledge helps you in the same way it has helped me all my life. Tight lines!
@RosinFlyFishing
@RosinFlyFishing 3 года назад
Thanks John, I really appreciate your understanding. I find many people get triggered and defensive and don't recognize and appreciate constructive criticism (especially on the internet!), but I am very willing to self reflect and improve upon myself as I think that is an important part of life, and I thank you for your kind intervention today. You are very lucky to have had your grandfather as a strong mentor and instill these values and lessons, and I wish I had the same before starting my journey. I fell in love with fishing as a kid, but even then it was largely without supervision or instruction. I know this will make me a better and more conscientious angler and I hope you keep me honest as I continue this journey! I hope you are having a good fishing season in the UK and I hope we can continue to share stories and experiences in the future!! 🙂
