I worked at a theater when 'Fury' was out and a WWII vet came in with his wife to see it. I chatted with him for a minute or two after selling him his ticket and thanked him for his service. Real nice guy. About an hour later I'm driving back from my lunch break and I see a bunch of emergency vehicles outside the entrance and I as I walk in paramedics were wheeling the vet out on respirator, apparently he had a heart attack during the movie. To this day I'm haunted by that because I wonder if the movie caused it and even worse, I don't even know if he lived or not.

Reminds me funny enough of my Uncle during Rambo. Nothing bothered him until it hit the speech at the end. "Nothing is over! Nothing! You just don't turn it off! It wasn't my war! You asked me I didn't ask you, and I did what I had to do to win, but somebody wouldn't let us win! Then I come back to the world, and I see all those maggots at the airport, protestin' me and spittin', callin' me baby killer and all kinds of vile crap! Who are they to protest me?! Huh?! Who are they?! Unless they been me and been there and know what the hell they yellin' about!" He'd always get silent at that part and just stare off into space long afterwards. He was infantry from January 30, 1968-1969. Was hit by two landmines. one he stepped on, the other was stepped on my a squadmate

Peter S Are you from the 30's? That's the only way I could see you saying that and be serious.
@DefThrone
@DefThrone 6 лет назад
Peter S. 700,000 Brits died in WW1. A lot that survived came back broken and in physical pieces. Nobody wanted to go to war after that. Chamberlain saw to that. Even after Poland was invaded, it took Churchill to properly mobilize England. The French weren't prepared for the Blitzkrieg. They believe the Maginot Line was effective enough. Both England and France halted massive funding for advanced tactics and weapons due to the belief that WWI was The Great War and the War to end all wars. There was no reason to. So now you have militaries that are under funded, not ready to be mobilized, aren't keeping up with newer tactics and military technology, and a public that is VERY anti war. Poland was invaded and England and Britain entered the war, but they simply weren't ready to mobilize. How do you get people to invade Germany and get to Poland yet hasn't been mobilizing at the rate of Hitler. Now Hitler turns his blitzkrieg towards France by way of Belgium and smashes through forest. Your people have little combat experience and the Germans have already had a proxy war in Spain as well as a recent invasion of Poland. They easily break through and take cities quickly. What would we do differently today? Go in deep so as to slow the progression of armor and make them vulnerable to infantry. But the French and British weren't up for it. They get pushed back all the way to the coast. Now, do we do what YOU would do? An internet armchair general who would fight to the death because it's honorable? Or would you do what tactically makes sense and evacuate the bulk of your army to fight another day? If Hitler would have pursued instead of being worried about his supply lines, the western front would be over. The French knew the sacrifice they were making because they believed the British would come back. Despite Churchill's insistence on leading the Americans through the Mediterranean into "Hitler's soft underbelly" eventually the Americans got sick of it and Churchill conceded to the D-Day invasion. You know nothing of history, especially regarding pre World War II.

Art The Great War is Hell. That is what we all can relate to. Even know few of us haven’t been through the war, we see it through the news, we see it through true stories. This man’s words didn’t also depict what happened in dunkirk, he had to fight for his life watching himself suffer, watching his childhood friends from school or back home die without getting to hold them in his hands. He’s all that’s left now. Just himself and his wife. I feel very bad for what he had to experience in the past, I broke down when he admitted that he was in the battle of Dunkirk. It’s safe to say the Germans are our allies now, but our History will never be forgotten. War is hell.

Me too. Speaking as a Yank, I can only say, Amen, Brother. As long as we insist on hate and divisiveness, there will be more slaughters. And it has to start with the individual. Who do you hate and resent in your own life? I've got my own list, and I'm working on forgiving them and moving on. It's not easy, but it's necessary. For individual peace and WORLD peace.

I don't like war either, but what do you do when Kim Jong Un is holding Asian countries hostage, and now he wants to hold the US hostage? Peace has only made the North Korean problem worse. My Grandad was in the Royal Navy at Dunkirk & D-Day. He once asked me when I was about 18 when I'd been the most scared in my life. I shrugged & mentioned a football match with England in Marseilles at the World Cup in '98. He looked me in the eye & told me that during D-Day his was one of the Allied ships tasked with drawing fire from the big Nazi guns arrayed on a cliff top so that the troop carriers could get close enough to the beach to get their men ashore near Caen for the 'Sword' objective. For 13 hours his ship sat there, as basically a target, whilst the huge German cannons blasted away. He told me they were powerless to do anything & every time they saw the cannon recoil & heard the huge 'boom' they all wondered if this one had their name on it, as ships exploded & sank all around them. He said some of his shipmates, better men than him, lost their nerves & fell apart under the pressure. Some dived overboard & were lost. Fortunately for him (& me of course), his ship wasn't hit but his brother (Jack's) ship went down (Jack lost 2 ships but survived them both) & another brother (Edward), was killed when his ship was sunk by a U'Boat whilst escorting a US convoy across the Atlantic. Pretty much trumped my story by a mile or ten lol.

Ian McDaid your grandad sounds like a very brave guy indeed. To be scared and still do your duty is the true meaning of bravery itself. My Dad was in the evacuation from Dunkirk and was wounded before he even got to the beach, he got off on the last day. All severely wounded were left behind and all walking wounded were taken home to Britain so my dad said he made sure that he could walk.

The only person from my family who fought in WW2 was my Grandma's uncle, he was a paratrooper for the British airborne division and was tragically killed in a miss communication between the British and the US which resulted in American soldiers raining fire down on the British paratroopers, from what I know he never even touched the ground and his body was never found.

Ian McDaid My grandad was drafted for the German army that invaded Stalingrad. He was from Slovenia like me and we were under occupation so he got drafted. While fighting in Stalingrad he told me stories of crazy people rushing trough fires, trough open fields while a German machine gun rained on them and they pushed them back he said he had never seen anything like that and as the winter held he decided it will be death or life and fleed one night and walked all the way home from Stalingrad to Slovenia while being shoot at by any Ally he came home with a bullet wound in his leg, which he later died because. Funny thing they used us as soldiers and raped our women, there is also a story my grandma told me her cousins and their mother watched the murder of their dad by a German officer in the basement. He shoot him in the head. For allying fellow partizans.

Ian McDaid Grandpa was in the french military, he got caught by the nazis during the blitzkrieg and released a year after to work on the railroad tracks... So yeah. Well from what he said to me regarding the whole "surrender" jokes, our generals are to blame for the fiasco that was our defense, the average soldier was well aware of what would happen, and it did, so they had to surrender without too much fighting and were pretty damn pissed about it, they all wanted a good fight and they never got it

Just take a moment to reflect over this veterans words... "It will never end. It will happen again. We are so intelligent and do such astonishing things. We can fly to the moon and still do such stupid things." This is truly the paradox that humanity is stuck in. Always striving to be better yet while striving we push others below us to get to the top in a never ending cycle... "Why can't humanity realize that war is futile and the only way to end the cycle is to put aside our human nature?" Though I wish this could be possible it's in our human nature and can't be put aside - War will repeat itself due to different beliefs and morals in this world and theres nothing we can do... God bless this veteran and all like him that haven't been recognized for doing what nobody else dared and went beyond all expectations to protect his country, I can't express my gratitude enough.

It only takes one person to want to fight, but everyone combined to bring around peace. The truly astonishing part about war is that some people crave it for whatever reason. I myself wanted nothing more than to be a warrior, to test myself in battle and call other men who did the same brother. Years later I wish we never had to go through any of that, the thing is though that I know at 17 signing my enlistment papers no one would have been able to tell me it's not something I needed to do and now when I speak to kids getting ready to go I can see my words have no effect on them. For a certain kind of person nothing but the experience of combat will do and until they get it anyone telling them about the realities of war might as well be someone drinking a beer telling them not to themselves.
@jengel05
@jengel05 7 лет назад
As someone who is enlisting next yearI feel the same as how you described yourself when you enlisted... Others I know that have enlisted and served have said very similar things like you described, but their words have had little to no effect. And it's sad because there will always be evil out in the world that is trying to quench out the good, (ISIS) and as long as they last I can't live knowing that others have gone and fought for our freedom while I've sat back my whole life doing nothing...

When I was in high school, a WWII camp survivor visited us to talk about his experiences. After the presentation, I (and many others) walked up to him to either shake his hand, give him a hug or ask a question they had about it all. I was standing right behind, when a guy in front of me asked the survivor *how he dealt with deniers of the holocaust* . He answered that he did not just visit schools, he also talked to neo-nazis. Letting them ask questions about the time and confront him if they had questions about something they didn't agree with. He told us, that at the start of such discussions, many neo-nazis looked at him with defiance and ridicule, even talking among themselves as he started telling. At the end of their meeting, many of those same neo-nazis couldn't look him in the eye and he had many who came up to him afterwards and said things like "I didn't know" or "I always thought that was a lie" ... but not everybody. At one of those meetings, one young neo-nazi had stood up, walked up to him, and to his face said: *"I don't believe you!"* When he heard that, he told us at the high school that he wasn't angry by what the young man said. *He felt truly, and extremely, sad* .

You only have to go to one of the camps to see that it's true, they are mostly still there with horrible evidence. And don't even start this stupid immigrant stuff honestly I see that written under every video that has Germany in it and the people who write it just have no idea what they are talking about and it's sad to see people from developed countries so racist, even if it's not about their own country. These men suffer, either by being injured or traumatized by the loss of good friends, all because some people don't agree with each others. These man were sent to fight in their youth and few of them came back to tell the tale. These men are no heroes, they are victims. We should treat and care for them as such. That man relived his past and he lost so much in his past. He doesn't want to be glorified, he just wants to be listened and understood. It's a.....an...... I think the only semi-adequate way to describe this as a "Bittersweet compliment" Or a "Begrudging compliment" I am not happy to be saying it....AT ALL.....but it is true.... All the old horrors this movie brought back up for him...all the screaming...all the blood...all the death and destruction....all the terrors and losses... ... ... Just like he was actually there again.... Seeing this movie, to him, was just like being there again...... For people like me, who love history, authentication, and replicas, we, almost ashamedly, consider that....nothing but complimentary to the movie. I feel dirty inside saying this.....i feel like im saying that his pain is a good thing......which IS NOT the case.....and i truely feel like a bad person for saying it....even though that context is ABSOLUTELY WRONG! He has all my sympathy and kindness, But i am kind of glad i wasnt watching this movie in the same theater as him.... His reactions would absolutely destroy my soul.....and break my heart in all the worst possible ways..... I hope he never has to see so much as a frame of this movie again....for his sake... Bless him for all he has done....

Rob Erickson after Saving Private Ryan was released, the number of WWII veterans shot up at facilities for treating PTSD. After having seen both movies, I’ll say that Dunkirk was dramatic and intense, but Saving Private Ryan was horrifying, especially the first scene. I still watch that movie and get chills as they approach the beach cause it’s so graphic

It’s sad really, There are no WW1 vets left, men like this are precious their stories must be told and recorded for history. Thank you for your service, your sacrifice, your lives. Gone but never, ever, forgotten.

Who are those six people disliking this! Shame on you, guys! May this man live a peaceful life and hopefully he´ll see his former comrades, who died at the beach of Dunkirk, again in heaven peace. God bless him! This man´s one reason why I´m so eager to watch this movie - probably one of the best war movies ever run on cinema screen?

Oh but it was. It may seem that the world is just as violent, but I assure it is not. We live now, in the most peaceful age in human history. War on steady decline ever since the Second World War's end. There are more than 7 billion people crammed onto this planet, yet in the past ten years, only half a million have perished due to the effects of combat. Most not due to combat directly., but the state it puts a country in. Fewer and fewer die every year, and it's all thanks to the heroes who fought World War Two.

The look in his eyes when he's talking about his buddies that passed away killed me. And his speech about how smart we are but how we still do stupid things is so true. What a solid gentleman he is. I hope he's still kicking n if he has passed away I really hope he went peacefully n surrounded by family
