Thank you for putting this video up! It really helps. I think the Fowlers like you have are made in Japan by NSK.

Awesome Video. I learned everything I needed to know from your video! Thanks for your effort to help others. My cheap digital micrometer now will zero correctly.

Thank you sir! My very best micrometer got the sight glass broken under one of the screws years ago, and all was good until day before yesterday, when somehow some crud finally made its way into the analogue, and everything was screwed up. The crud in the analogue gears prevented smooth action, which in turn prevented accurate measurements. I was just about to throw in the towel, but decided to see if some kind person would post how to re-calibrate one of these awesome units (after I cleaned it). That person is you. I don't know what possessed you to share this knowledge with the world, but I would like to thank you very much indeed!

Thanks for making this video. I just got a vintage Mitutoyo (maybe?) similar to yours off ebay super cheap sold as an ornament. After calibrating it seems to be working fine!

Wow, thank you greatly for taking the time to show us this tutorial! My micrometer was off .002 at 1" but now its perfect!

You are very welcome. When I bought the micrometer in the video it was off quite a bit. I figured that if I try to fix it but made it worst then there would be no loss because it was useless the way it was. I spent some time learning how these things were constructed then took it apart and began calibrating it.

Nice video. One thing i noticed is u calibrated it directly on 3.000" where as i think it may have worked better if u would have one it at 3.0003-3.0005" as when u put it back together and ratchet it tries to roll halfway to the 9 in the tenths column. Kinda a pep peeve of mine. I like to use the "digital" scale alone so if its halfway between 0 and 9 in the tenths column that would be 2.9995" now really what u did is fine it is suppose to be a reference as anything under a thou u should use the tenth vernier lines but if u calibrate it like i said u can read the digital part to half thou pretty reliably. If it is halfway between a number u estimate it if it is 3/4 of the way that is roughly 6-8 tenths. The digital scale has to be calibrated perfectly to do so and having 2 forms of readings can cause issues especially if ur company calibrated ur tools they may okay it because the vernier is in and the digital is within a thou therefore the digital cant be used for very accurate readings. This is why i upgraded my 0-1 and 1-2 to mitutoyo absolute coolant proof electronic digital .00005" resolution mics. These are insane accurate like no other. Anytime any co worker needs a second opinion measurement they ask me to check with that. People are very sketch with electronic but in todays age they are the most accurate way to measure. Vernier is reliable but not as accurate resolution wise. Dials aside from indicators are not great anymore. I have a 12 inch brown and sharp and even though it is accurate it has gear teeth that are very easy to break if any little chip or metal gets in there and a broken tooth will cause it to skip and just like that a $350 tool is junk. Brown and sharp already replaced one and refuses to do more so i am forced to use it sparingly. Electronic is my favorite choice. Although dial indicators especially brown and sharp interrapid are still the best choice. Unless u know of a better alternative i do have mitutoyo electronic plunger style indicators but for test style the kind i use 95% of the time its dial only

I have got to say, thank you. I create band saws with wood mills. We recently got a complaint saying that our "kerf" was .005 off what it was supposed to be. Turns out that everything was messed up with our Mics. I just finished calibrating it, i am going to test it in the morning at work. One thing. i was told i did not need a standard with .0001 and 1, is that true? or is their something i need.

Great video. One question if I may... Did everything as the video shows, and while it operates and is accurate, there is now a near constant ticking noise when it's being used. It will get better if I loosen the screws and back the gears off slightly, or worse if I try to push them in closer, but I can't seem to get it totally quiet. Am I just not getting things lined up perfectly? It's the exact same model micrometer as the one in your video.

Try backing off the gears a little and make sure you don't have them installed on an angle.

Very useful video. Can you tell me how I can fix my micrometer? It is a Mitutoyo o" to 1" and the gears are not engaging ie; when the thimble is turned the reading stays at zero.
@denouch358
@denouch358 8 лет назад
+George Henry Hi George,I can only assume that the Mitutoyo works the same as all other Mics, the digits are held to the Mic with 2 screws. Loosen the screws and move the digits up or down until the gears mesh.

Be interesting to see if it was accurate at 2 " or 4 ". How did it get off in the first place? Are the gears stripped?
@denouch358
@denouch358 7 лет назад
It came out-of-the-box that way, gears are not stripped. Everything is working great.

When i said 12" dial i mean calipers not micrometer

Now all you have to do is calibrate the standard lol. Should use ceramic gauge blocks to calibrate it.

You got 1 teeth misalignment on lower digit...
@denouch358

Hi Kevin, If you are calibrating a 0-1" mic then you don't need a standard, just close up the mic and make sure it reads zero.. Anything greater then 1" needs a standard.
