I met Tony C. during spring training in 1971 (Holtville, Ca. / Angels). Just me and him in the locker room. So easy in the early 70's to walk up & see your favorite players.

One of the saddest 'what could have been" stories in MLB history. Tony C had to sit out '68, had a good '69, hit 36 HRs in 1970, then got traded to California where his eye trouble reoccurred. Youngest player to lead the league in HR's

Right? Also, both the Red Sox and Angels uniforms were made at the time by Tim McAuliffe's company, which is why they have similar lettering and the same number styles. I think McAuliffe did the ballcaps as well.

I enjoyed how Curt Gowdy mentioned Babe Ruth as once being a great Red Sox pitcher who eventually became a great Yankees hitter. With all the great hitters that followed Ruth I find most amazing how he was a great pitcher as well as a great hitter.

Tragically, the day before on August 18,1967, Tony Conigliaro was horribly beaned by Angels pitcher Jack Hamilton. Sadly, Conigliaro was never the same. Tony Conigliaro is very beloved by Boston Red Sox fans! R.I.P. ANTHONY RICHARD "TONY" CONIGLIARO.

Notice the batting helmet flap worn by Mike Andrews...this was in response to what had happened just the night before to Tony Conigliaro when he was struck by a fastball from Angels pitcher, Jack Hamilton, and was nearly killed...before the Tony C beaning, helmet flaps were almost never worn...but that accident changed baseball forever.....and has saved thousands of ball players from serious injury over the decades...RIP Tony C

This was Koufax first year on The Game of the Week. I'm sure they eased him in, one of the reasons why he was so quiet. Gowdy had to almost introduce him to get him to say anything. I wonder what the NBC execs were saying? Back then, they didn't have analyst per say. They would interject only when something pertinent was going on. One of the reasons why Tony Kuebek was so good was he was a natural and lived to talk baseball. He and Gowdy were so good together. In fact Kuebek was just as good with Garigarola and Costas. A rarity. This was basically the format we came to know as the 70's came around and the "Color" commentator was just as important as the PBP guys! I can't imagine sports on TV without Curt Gowdy. He was everywhere and ' to never have off. - Gowdy didn't. Gowdy was in my home more than my mom.

I agree, I would say that Gowdy and Kubek were the best team in sports broadcasting. In Canada we were very lucky to have Kubek doing colour for Blue Jay games through the 80's. He always had something interesting to say about the game and never talked too much, the way they do today.

5:53: Curt had to correct Sandy on why Parnell was such a good left handed pitcher in Fenway park. Sandy assumed it was because Parnell got right handers to hit outside pitches for outs while trying to pull, but Curt tactfully clarified that it was actually the inside sinker that Parnell used to get getting right handed hitters out. Curt not only had great baseball knowledge, but he was a consummate gentleman.

gowdy was the best. he had an ease of delivery of the play by play and was an encyclopaedia of baseball knowledge given in storytelling style that was very compelling to listen to. these dimwits today like joe buck can't hold a candle to him

First baseball game I ever attended. Wonderful, exciting display of hitting. Final score was 12-11 Sox. I remember that the night before I was at my Uncle Frank’s home listening to the Sox-Angels game on the radio when Conigliaro was accidentally hit in the eye by Jack Hamilton. Ugh.
