California: Best Fig Varieties?

Awesome as usual ! This video is informative and enlightening specially to those who live in hot and dry state of California. I picked up a lot more the 2nd time I watch this video am not start to not stay away from the Smyrna and San Pedro type fig, blessed to be living in the wasps country. Thank you Ross.

Hi Ross, Sf Bay Area Cali guy here and lives about 1hr away from Harvey's Location. We are truly blessed here in CA to have the climate to grow all types of figs. I have been to Prusch Park in San Jose, CA and have seen the Fig orchard there first hand. I personally have a few Col de Dame's (Cuello de Dama) in my humble collection. I also have CdD Noire, Blk Madiera, Preto and I-258 planted in the ground that I recently planted. Can't wait to get some figs off of them. Maybe one day I'll get to visit Harvey's Place. Btw..your videos are very informative. Thank you!

As a new fig grower in SoCal, I can confirm that DFIC 0023 is an absolutely amazing variety, I'd say if one were to choose just a single variety to hand pollinate, DFIC 0023 simply HAS to be on the short list. I enjoyed these figs more last season than just about any other fig, and only the very best Panachee and Unknown Pastiliere could even come close, and prime examples of those two are extraordinary. It gets brownie points for having such a different flavor profile than most, while also being very sweet and juicy at the same time. It's also probably the fastest grower, and puts out the healthiest looking leaves. A winner all around

been watching all your videos because I just picked up my first fig tree... never even tried a fresh one, I'm air pruning the top to get a 2nd tree. Black Mission, that's what the local nursery had besides Brown Turkey. Interested in Black Madeira from all the videos you've done praising them.

A lot of nice varieties mentioned there Ross, thanks for the info. As I'm starting to grow in Las Vegas I've paid attention to figs that do well in hot zones and I think that Paul (Tyro) thinks that Vista (as well as other bordeaux's RdB, etc...) are prolific producers but are secondary because of their thin skin. They produce, but don't hang well. A couple of others he grows that take the heat are I-258 and CdD Roja (probably all the CdD's). The staples in LV for 40 years has been BT, Kadota, Black Mission & Conadria which all take the heat and do well but we're trying to expand the flavor profile a little more here now and mix in some different varieties. Thanks for the suggestions!

I am in beginning stages of learning the science of Figs. 2016 I moved from LI NY to Newport Beach CA (zone 10b) I brought a cutting of my 120 year family tree (we call her Carolina Fig). She’s doing great here and I’m having success with propagation for friends. My question is related to fig wasp. Can you explain what the wasp does and how fig growers get wasps to do their thing. Also, what do you think about LSU Tiger and Victoria for my area? Thanks for your help!
