California franchise owner discusses the impact of $20 minimum wage for fast food workers

California's Fast Act legislation took effect Monday, mandating all fast food chains to raise their minimum wage to $20 per hour. Pretzel Power Inc & Johnson Java LLC CEO Alex Johnson joins Market Domination Overtime to discuss the implications of this law on his business operations.
Johnson states that the legislation has forced him to raise prices at his franchise locations, saying, "This is truly something I don't want to do." He notes events like the COVID-19 pandemic have previously resulted in price increases, which ultimately impacted sales. Johnson expresses concern that customers will "trade-off" to other food options in the face of higher costs.
For the time being, Johnson is not looking to open any new locations. He highlights that workers benefiting from the bill express fears that living costs in the state will rise even more as a result of the new minimum wage, potentially "compressing their spending power even more."

The answer was ; he can’t pay these people minimum wage if the government doesn’t force it. Because the profits margins don’t allow it. Owners tell people “ if you would like a job, this is the pay” worker say” I want the job; or , I don’t want the job” this is how it should be

I experienced it in real life and spoke with people about it after... ambulance drivers make around $21 an hour which is nothing after taxes. they only have to know cpr and basic life support to my knowledge. they can get speeding or camera tickets and have to pay for them... it's a junk job that people only take because it's their best option or to move up... but all the money goes to the owners. it's disgusting... the main point we need to focus on is that way too many people have trouble paying for rent and daily living. they can't afford mental health breaks that other countries give like France. we're guaranteed nothing most times. everyone should have a shot to thrive similar to the 70s and 80s and 90s, even the 2000s weren't too expensive. and the owners still take home multiple millions and the people directly below are overpaid

People, $1.11 an hour pay raise per employee would never justify raising the prices nearly double by going from $5 or $6 to $12-$15. That's insane. This f****** raise has everyone focusing on the wrong thing The real problem is the greed of the companies that own everything The companies that started jacking the prices up the moment Americans started to say I want to work less and spend more time with my children I had fun with my kids during the pandemic lockdown I'll work out as a lawyer out of my house instead of a firm so I can spend more time with my kids and then at the same time that was when we were trying to raise our ability to monitor what pharmaceutical companies charge us for prescriptions Right after they said hell no and made sure we didn't get what we wanted and Biden kissing their corporate addiction machine executives asses all along the way. The raise is not the issue. Why people need this raises the issue. And the next issue coming is going to be had a deal with all the people that are going to be robbing each other because it's impossible to shoplift for food in the store because these stores have put everything on such a lockdown that when everyone gets fired from losing their job to AI and no one's done anything to watch out for this even though you seen what happens when 30 people Robin Nordstrom at the same time in Oakland and they get all the handbags they want well next time when they can't get handbags or food cuz there's none on their shelves you have to ask for it all to be brought to you or have it delivered they're going to be rubbing the delivery man they're going to be robbing the people that have it at their doorstep they're going to be robbing the person walking down the sidewalk who looks like they might have cash in their pocket and then the person that gets robbed well one they get robbed that sucks it does and to the person that does it well they're going to start throwing them in jail and they know where everyone is because just like Mr wonderful said a couple weeks ago we can scan your retinas in photographs and moody and film can be wearing a mask we'll find you still and you'll never work for him again and if you steal something from these things well there's a reason why all these rich people have been invented investing in corporate prisons and by corporate I mean funded privately They plan on filling them up and then the next 10 years I think it's going to be like the hunger games without the enjoyment of the games it's just going to be people hungry and then those on the other side of the f****** city or state with all the money inside bubble protected worlds of beauty. No one's keeping their eye on the prize except for the people that hold all the keys.

Wages have not kept up to the cost of living because just look at how many families require both parents income and even more than one job! Saying you don’t want the state to require living wages be paid for these profiteering franchise style business model is like saying go back to dumping waste in rivers downstream of my home or burn trash in the community when the wind blows it away from my home! Since I'm from Australia, which has the highest minimum wage in the world, I find that Americans don't appreciate labor-let's face it, slavery was historically the main driver of your economy. Allow these companies that are unable to pay a fair salary to close. Low-paid workers contribute to the poverty of others; better wages encourage consumer spending, which boosts the overall economy. These companies that are collapsing have unsound business plans.The Australian economy hasn't had an economic recession in over 32 years. e.g $27 an hour minimum nationwide - no business is exempt its legally mandatory - Saturdays 50% more or $37.50 an hour, Sundays double $50 per hour and public holiday minimum $75 per hour - we have no tipping in services areas, all taxes are including in all pricing - e.g minimum first year salary of a teacher here is $107k per year - yet it all works well across the country -including McDonald's etc Plus all businesses must pay 12% on top of your income to your superannuation - pension plan

Obviously this cinnamon bun franchise owner has been profiting or he wouldn’t have so many stores! Why doesn’t he just stop paying for his franchise and cut out using all the corporate logo if he can’t pay living wages? No it sounds like these franchise owners feel the extra cost leaving the community for fees and logos are more important to them than employees making living wages. These owners don’t care if their workers children are on free school lunches and free healthcare because the franchise makes more by cost shifting the need for living wages off to others in community rather than paying employees living wages.

It's unreasonable for many advanced jobs to require certifications while paying less than $20 an hour. Opting for fast-food jobs seems preferable to accepting such positions. I hope this bill compels non-food companies to reassess their employment practices, making roles more attractive and equitable for workers, instead of perpetuating low-wage, high-demand positions. If it forces the non-food business out of business because they can't find workers or keep up with demand even better. This is what young & older workers today do not understand and that is, there are not short cuts to making good money on a job. As I understand that these workers need to make more money as the cost of living continues to out pace daily prices on goods and services. But just like the UAW and SAG/AFTRA strike there will always be consequences to actions. As in California the Gov. of that state championed this new wage increase as a win but for who is it a win for the workers or the state. You every state that has pushed the boundaries of working wages are states that collect state income tax like California. So here is the issue California state income tax rate increased on January 2024 to 14.5% this means that your $20 dollar per hour pay check is going to be paying a lot more in state and federal tax as well as all other deductions that apply. Now your wondering how this new hourly wage translates to the UAW & SAG/AFTRA strikes, the UAW strike cost each of the big 3 auto makers 1 Billion dollars over the 3 year contract and SAG/AFTRA costs the studios about the same 1 Billion per year. Now as in the California wage increase the money you payout has to come from some place just like the other 2 strikes I mentioned. The big 3 auto makers and the motion picture studios have to find that money some were in there budget so the result in finding this extra money is in increase cost to consumers or layoffs and hours reduced. Now with this in mind California's min. wage increase will result in store closures reduced hours and layoffs, Remember the majority of these franchised restaurants operate on a 2 to3% profit margin and the corporate stores run differently. Some posted a response to one of my earlier posts stating you can look up McDonald's budget info online, but this is just for the corporate stores and not the franchised stores, As for the Big 3 auto makers they have closed down plants and have laid off over 175k in employees, and as for the SAG/AFTRA strike we are seeing less content and shorter TV series episodes down from 22 per season to just 8 to 13 episodes per season and longer wait times in between season most cases one year or longer and only experienced seasoned writers are getting the jobs new writer are not getting any work. Always remember this in a strike there are no winners and in this California wage increase there are no winners either because the more money you pay out as a business the same money needs to come from some other budget item. I thank you for your time and good luck to all.

Except not all businesses operate on same level. These are franchises of massive corporations which add on franchise fees and require consumables from corporate all at markup which leaves local communities. These franchises also have the advertising power of corporate which are funds coming right out of community just like taxes. So not only is that advantage over the potential small competitors there should be bulk purchasing power of franchise system which competes against small competitors. I haven’t seen the media, which profits greatly from franchise advertising budgets, truly present the facts. If a state or community has these massive fast food franchises’ workers needing social services a state has every right to require living wages. Every fast food worker not earning living wages is burden on someone else in communities. It just seems all these celebrities and sports stars getting rich from endorsements isn’t right when actual workers handling your food are not making a living wage! Especially when in some places there are no other jobs except below living wage service and retail jobs!
@user-jf6pz5jx8g
@user-jf6pz5jx8g 2 месяца назад
@@musicgram08 I am not disputing your post, But reality is franchise stores have to adhere to strict guidelines when it comes to how a franchise is operated. The playing field will never be level when it comes to franchise stores and independent stores, I also believe that people should earn a living wage, but at the same time these people who have championed a living wage laws and have won must also understand the consequences of this action. And this is the major issue with all strikes and wage increases as we move forward --For example a franchised store runs on a 2 to 4% profit margin as I have indicated before, these same franchise store are required to pay in some cases up to 20% monthly of there gross income to the corporate office and this is just one fee and there are many others, for example if you want your franchised store to be remodeled it has to be done and approved by the corporate office and you pay extra for this above your franchise fee, these are just two examples of what a franchised store must do or pay. Lets not even talk about the impact on the community because that is a mute questions, corporate guidelines and rules are put in place for each franchise to increase revenue to the corporate office and in turn the corporate office will guarantee profitability for that location thru corporate assisting in advertising and operation of that franchise. McDonald's, Burger King, Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried chicken and fosters, Denny's, Village Inn, just to name a few. As much as we would like to see the playing field leveled on these type of businesses we also know it will never happen. and one last point to make this California board that is over seeing the wage hikes in that state has the power to raise the hourly wage even higher if they feel the need to. This is most defiantly goring to happen in the near future and you will see more fast food businesses closed there doors. But lets swing back to that $20 dollar wage increase and remember the state will be collecting 14.5% in state income tax,this 14.5% tax will bring the $20 wage down to around $17 dollars (so you just lost $3 dollars just by taking out the 14.5% state tax, now add in all the other deductions and you will see your net income and the higher wage may put a lot of these full time employees in a higher income bracket which will mean less net income per year. Also it is my opinion that California increased the min. wage to get more of the tax that comes with the wage hike.Look I get it people need to make more money as as the daily cost of food and durable goods increase and out pace income. But if anyone reading this post remembers just one thing in this post. "it is always about the money" any decision that is made wither to fire or close a store it is all about the money every time. The communities are a concern as stores continue to close or lay off employees, but in the end it is the owners who will make that call As one worker from Fosters said in a new cast "if I know all this would happen I would have never voted yes on the state bill for higher wages" And businesses are just getting started within the next 12 months after the dust settles we will see the entire damage to the system.
@musicgram08
@musicgram08 2 месяца назад
@@user-jf6pz5jx8g Not all states tax wages. No matter taxes are just part of the cost of living, unless work is off the books which many states with illegal employment is the case. I once saw statistics which indicate the federal government tracks how many employees each state has per different businesses. It was glaringly obvious some states known for illegal employment practices had significantly fewer workers in a business than comparable business in another state not known for illegal employment. Taxes are collected to provide community infrastructure and services. Some states take advantage of tourists or other ways with tax programs that don’t require state income taxes. Also federal government taxes take those state income taxes into account so it may not matter in the complete picture of cost of living from state to state. So perhaps California has determined that the franchise owners, who are told by a corporate entity how to run the business, are too inexperienced to determine living wage for employees. Maybe California has determined if the business franchise overlord making so much they can pay huge celebrity endorsements but can’t pick a few of those expensive ticks off the low wage imposed upon those inexperienced dog of a franchisee then good bye fast food franchises and don’t let the state’s door hit you in the greedy backside.
