California Has A Nearly Perfect Geography... So Why Are People Fleeing The State? 

High taxes, high crime, high cost of living, plenty of homelessness, very high housing costs. People should enjoy living there.

They are leaving because of high living costs, bad politics, crime, unaffordable housing, etc.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock the last 10 years, it’s pretty obvious why people are leaving.

Extremely high cost of living. Same reason people are fleeing other states like NJ and NY.

Simple: Taxes and cost of living.

Native San Diegan here - it’s just too expensive really lol. I moved down South to SC.

This is just an inkling of what I paid in CA. The property taxes on my 1700 sq ft home and it's 2½ acres in Sonoma county went up to $16000 a year. My PG&E electric bill averaged $400-500 a month. There are SO MANY MORE reasons, but now living in Prescott AZ, property tax is $1800 on my 1800 sq ft new home and my electric bill is $75 a month. I left not because of geography or microclimates

Before even watching I’ll tell you it’s because it’s unreasonably priced. California is by far the most naturally beautiful state and the weather is great so it should cost a LITTLE more than everywhere else BUT NOT TWICE AS MUCH. Sacramento is the “inexpensive” part of California. For what I pay to live in the hood here I lived in the suburbs in Vegas and Dallas. I’d be crazy to buy here knowing what I know. A good portion of Californians don’t have the financial freedom to go enjoy the natural beauty or get away from work and home very often. It’s sad. And people with power make it impossible to build the amount of homes needed to change things because it would drive down their own property value.

I moved to California in 1976 when I was 20 years old and retired to Thailand in 2017. I lived in the San Francisco East Bay. I loved my life and career in CA but I had had enough once I had found someplace new and enticing. One geographic feature contributing to my decision to leave was the Bay Area fog. It was not an issue when I was young and at work but became unpleasant and tiresome retired at home. The warm tropical climate in Thailand immediately attracted me. Looking back at CA 7 years later I have to admit that the cost of living, if I returned, would be a barrier but more importantly, I think the CA politics and government and political divisions in the whole of the US is a bigger deterrent to my return. I think I will stay where I am. I have a beautiful new home, enjoy the lower cost of living, have access to great healthcare, and can enjoy a safe and peaceful retirement.

For me it was 100% the money. As a Gen X'er who grew up in San Jose and entered the workforce in the 90s, my goal was always to own a house, but sadly the steady increase in housing prices outstripped my ability to save up for a down payment. About 20 years ago, the houses in the neighborhood where I grew up were nearing the better part of a million dollars, and I knew that there would be no way that I could afford a house without moving to Tracy or Stockton. I ended up moving to Oregon and buying a nice house for less than a quarter of what it would cost in San Jose.

I think it’s mostly the high cost of housing. Most young couples and families, even with good dual incomes, could not possibly save enough for a down payment on a $1.5 million home, the starter price in my California county, Marin. Then the mortgage payments, taxes and insurance would be very high. Plus, the cost of everything else here in California, like fuel, transportation and food, is very high in this state. I know I want to move since the “homeless” made a huge encampment a block from my house, but when I sell my current home, I probably couldn’t get anything equivalent in other respects. Only the wealthiest can afford to raise a family here, especially if the mother wants to spend the pre-school years at home with their young children, I know I would. Many of us Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964), boomers have an advantage, if we have inherited the assets of our parents, or received financial assistance from them while they were alive. But, we Boomers are in our 60s or older now, much too late to start families. I know my ex and I could never afford to have children, although we are both degreed professionals. We just couldn’t afford for me to not work full-time and our tiny cottage would have been too small.

California was in a drought for most of my adult life and I moved to Vegas in 2022 right before there was a bunch of rain in CA. Every time I go back to visit, from Sacramento to San Diego, it's so much more green and beautiful, it's really good for your soul. My bank account is doing much better out here in the desert though.

Alot of other comments have already stated what i wanted to say myself. Think the buffoons in Sacramento will order 4 million new apartments & condos to house more working class residents? WRONG! The people in rich areas will object. The farmers in the Central, Sacramento, & Imperial Valleys will object. Long-time residents will object due to many things, including traffic congestion. As for people that left, it's more than the high cost of living. Many companies like Tesla & SpaceX moved to Texas and took many of its employees with them. Those that moved to Idaho, Texas, & Florida did so for political & cultural reasons. Geoff, the politicians & their rich donors want to turn California into their own version...of Monaco or Dubai.

As a California resident, back in the mid-20th century, the default mode of city planning changed from walkable dense neighborhoods and grid-planned streetcar suburbs to car-centric suburbia. Public transportation was almost completely gutted out and the freeways began to be built. Housing was cheap and plenty from the 1950s-1990s due to endless suburban growth, but the suburban sprawl was soon constrained by the mountains that surround California’s largest cities. Still, people kept moving and the amount of housing built could not keep up with demand. Traffic on freeways became even more clogged (it’s always been this way since the beginning of the freeways themselves), and nowadays it’s quite popular to expand whatever current public transportation system exists in order to decongest the freeways. Also, last year to alleviate the housing crisis, single-family zoning was eliminated in an effort to provide more housing.

My family left CA to the north east. CA is a beautiful place, but the costs were our primary factor for leaving. second was wanting to buy a house on a decent size of land, and in CA you need millions for that, or live in the desert, or live where there are fires. Instead of driving for 2-3 hours to get to the wilderness, its in my backyard now.

Rent is the sole reason. In Metro Detroit I live in a zero crime suburb and pay $1150 per month for a two-bedroom apartment. In a zero crime suburb of LA or SF I would imagine paying $5,000/month. In more average neighborhoods around me you're paying more like $800-900/month. If you're doing really bad then you can probably find a place in the metro area for $200-300/month. You could say homeless people or mental illness or crime or politics but facts are facts: People can't afford a place they'd actually like to live in in California. Texas and Florida aren't far behind.

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. People flocked there in droves, california struggled to support their booming population but couldnt. Now its home to the very rich and very poor with a serious drug problem. And dont get me started on swimming pools in the desert

It's not just housing. I lived in CA for 16 years. Many jobs are also leaving CA - its much easier to find good housing and a good paying job elsewhere. The tax burden is also very high by leaving CA I got an effective pay raise due to the lower taxes. The same goes for the cost of utilities - I live in a colder climate and my electric and gas bills have gone down. CA also won't fix its freeways with mass transit. The freeways simply move way more people than could be moved by train and/or bus.

Short answer: appalling poverty and homelessness, drug epidemic and wealth inequality. Overall, the place is unliveable unless you're rich.

I'm a Baltimore native and moved to northern California back in 2017 for a few months working on a farm but it didn't work out and have been back in Maryland but I'm considering moving back. I miss it. I grew up in big city but once you get in touch with nature its all you need. Coming back to Baltimore is so depressing lol Also considering salt lake city (is a good balance of my life living in Baltimore but has the mountains like in Humboldt and Vermont and a perhaps Maine. Maryland is way to expensive and boring in my opinion. Was just let go from my job so the world is my oyster

How many people “from California” were born there? How many people born there have roots there further than 50 years? 80 years? If your family lived there before WW II, you are in a very rare situation. Now look at North Dakota. Nearly every resident has family roots from before 1910.

I left California in 2016. I was born and raised in Sacramento. The writing was on the wall and had been for decades. I couldn't survive financially out there without being rich so I moved East.

I've got a different one. I worked in Los Angeles for 25 years. As I single guy, I dated, looking for a potential life partner. I found nothing but spoiled, entitled brats, horrible attitude feminists, and serial cheaters. Two decades of time and money wasted with no positive result. While simultaneously watching all my friends get destroyed in awful divorces. So I took early retirement, and moved to the Philippines. Found my partner in less than a year. I had to leave California to find actual "partnership" with a woman.

Horrible government policies, high taxes, lack of school choice, extremely unfriendly business climate are all more significant than the cost of living - since much of the cost of living has to do with bad policy (save housing prices). California has no excuse - could be so much better. This state is a sadly in serious decline.

As a current Californian; The housing (rent and ownership), crime rate, and relatively low pay per the housing costs isn't great. Even my friends who have useful degree's, not a liberal arts or any of that crap, in IT or Bio Med are struggling to own a home or barely make it here. It sucks!

so im a true california native born here and im 35. in my lifetime ive seen entire apartment blocks populations replaced with central americans. this primarily explains people leaving california. the locals are priced out of the market by the onslaugjt from central america. i was one of few to survive because and my dad were among highest tier toughness, he worked hard until age 70, i became a trucker traveling 48 states successfully. and i didnt have kids while maintaining good relationship with my dad thriugh my 20s. these reasoned allowed me to afford to stay while most people have no choices but to flee or join military and usa was war with afghanistan that usa predictably lost and so i didnt want to join military. also another big factor is antitrust in the big sectors of the market. so cartels buy up big sectors of commerce that are hard for new competition to join and they set prices rather than take prices. and so they have politicians under undue influence. they also at any time can destroy usa economy through antitrust violatins. even if you google oligopoly the words cartels comes up alot and for good reason, the riche cartels are few rich enough to gain control of these sectors of markets especially in commerce. its also very closely resembles mafia. but it all contributes to central america having an advantage over general usa population. there is also a thing called trade based money laundering that occurs and international trading is big player in how its done. etc. all these factors combines play big roles. for those who dont know, when antitrust is violates it inhibits economy growth and jobs and raises prices and gives foreign nations advantages over usa. etc.

Californians moving to NY is just silly.

Your thesis is not about the physical abundance, resources or the culture. The PRIMARY cause of the migration is Rules & Regulatory Issues like the Coastal Commission, Building Codes and for Employment. If all imported goods were subject to California’s environmental & employment rules, there would be no imports. The political system is ONE PARTY which throttles education, creativity and one keeping the fruits of their labors unlike slaves. In the 74 years association & appreciation of your geographic presentation, I feel that the new arrivals do not appreciate those resources as much of cultural “natives” of all economic condition. Just imagine that California went from a part time government in 1962 to a full time government piling on layer upon layer of a corrupt, vassel structure.

I left in 2019 because the state essentially regulated me out of my family farm, taxed/fined me for the most absurd stuff and outside of that they do this to everyone else so everything is expensive and it just made it a real struggle to live there despite making decent money. Thankfully it's been the single greatest economic, quality of life and personal freedom upgrade I've ever experienced living in a more pro-freedom state. California is the greatest example of why not to vote for the things California votes for.

It saddens me that a state with such potential has leaders that are destroying it for their own self interests. Sickening, really.

You really nailed it when you said that California doesn't build enough housing and that's why it's so expensive to live there. That's the biggest reason why it's so expensive, but not the only one. But many of the people who live there don't seem to understand basic supply and demand when it comes to home prices and rents and/or they don't care about the negative effects of not building enough housing as long as they've got what they want.

California covers a big area, but much if not most of it is uninhabitable mountains and deserts. The Bay Area is a good example of why it is hard to build enough housing. Most of the Bay Area consists of water and mountains. There is a large body of water called San Francisco Bay in the middle and a mountain range on both sides of the bay. In San Mateo County, where I live, the cities are squeezed between the bay and the mountains, with no room to expand. The only way to add more housing is to build high density housing on underutilized land such as surface parking lots and strip malls. People who want to live in a single family detached house with a yard are out of luck unless they have lots of money to buy one of those houses. The median home price in this county is $1.7 million. The only reason I can afford to live here is that I am old enough to have bought my house back in the 20th century when home prices were still affordable.

Been to California three times, I love it, best combination of natural resources and diverse climates unmatched by any other state. Big cities to beautiful nature. Nothing grows forever though and the same will happen to other fast growing states in the future. California has everything .

I have lived in California for 60 years. Comparing my lifestyle with other states is no contest, it’s California! I went from city/suburbs to a rural/small town which I would highly recommend. 😂

Wow... he sure glossed over criminal justice policy and ridiculous COVID restrictions. Everyone I know who left California starting in 2020 cited at least one of those two as their reason for moving out.

Everyone left because they sold house's they bought for 100k for 400k-to 500k. And bought huge homes in other states for half the price.

I'm a native San Diegan. I've lived in 2 other states. I couldn't wait to come home. I may not be able to buy a house, but I found a nice apt in a nice neighborhood near my job in Los Angeles. Now I'm retired and I will NEVER leave California again. BTW, there is NO place in any state or city that is "crime free". That's just ridiculous for people to say.

That is not true. The population has actually grown again lately according to the latest numbers. I live in California and I would choose to live here over any other state. It still has the 5th largest economy in the world and most of the high tech and entertainment companies are still based in the state. All those people who talk bad about the state must watch Fox News or something. There are a lot of states in worse shape.

Count me in the large group of people who have left or are planning on leaving. I absolutely *love* California, but unless you're making a tech salary or something close to it, or have inherited property/other forms of generational wealth, it is very difficult to get ahead here. Most people are already familiar with the incredibly high home prices and rents in the cities, but what's not talked about as much are the $5+ per gallon gas, the exorbitant energy costs (43+ cents per kilowatt hour charged by PG&E during low demand times or 53+ cents per kilowatt hour during peak demand periods), car registration costs that set me back $329 this past February on a 4 year old Honda Fit and now my auto insurance rates are set to increase to over $230 per month, despite zero tickets or accidents as a 41 year old. This is just the tip of the iceberg of all the extra costs associated with living here; I could list many more. I'll be relocating up to Washington state, which is still expensive-ish, but at least I'll be able to register my car for $68 and my auto insurance will be dropping down to $75 per month for the same exact policy I currently have here in California. Gas is a dollar cheaper per gallon, and electricity costs are 5-7x cheaper per kilowatt hour, depending on your utility provider. Plus my rent will drop by 2/5, even though salaries and job opportunities are quite similar. There are other serious issues here; the very lenient policies that only encourage crimes such as retail theft and auto theft/burgularies to flourish for starters. I will definitely come back and visit friends/family a few times per year, but as someone who has spent significant amounts of time up in Washington state , I'll definitely have a better quality of life overall up north. Washington state definitely has its issues too, but definitely not as many as here in California.

Simple-many think they can move to somewhere like Texas, support and vote for the policies they had in California, then expect it to be cheaper and better with zero consequences or repercussions.

(1) When talking about population declines by state, shouldn't we convert numbers to percentage of population to start with? I haven't looked, but I'm sure your channel has already pointed out that the metropolitan area of Los Angeles alone is greater than like that of the ten smallest population states combined. So anyone saying that more people left California than any other state is purposefully misleading. (2) How many of those who "left" actually died from the pandemic, and thus didn't "migrate" away to another state. People like Ron DeSantis have tried to point out that California lost more people to Covid than any other state, again being misleading since by percentage of population, it's like in the lowest 15 of states. In fact, New York, the state that lost the most people since it was the epicenter of the first wave when we didn't know how to deal with it, is now lower per capita than most red states. (3) Could someone please tell me where these population figures are coming from? The U.S. census only happens once per decade, and I believe the last one was largely conducted in 2019. Can we say with any true accuracy how many people have left the state? Anecdotally, we know some who could continue to telecommute and keep their jobs left for cheaper housing and lower taxes, but that's all anecdotal, and I doubt THAT many were allowed to keep their jobs while moving out of state. Tesla moved to Texas, so that surely took some employees, but not all--and now Tesla has left Austin for some other location.

I left 2018 to new zealand for a lady but was planning to leave CA by 2020 (of course not knowing about covid would've hurt that) mainly due to jobs not being tech were notnpaying enough for housing in the Los Angeles area. Our bubble of politocs and self entitlement (most of America really) keeps most people stuck but many flee for funds, homes and new life

Housing prices have skyrocketed because of lack of construction but that is because of the rampant increase in regulatory restrictions and the legal clout of NIMBY entrenched residents. Add the very high taxes, gas prices, insurance premiums and utility costs to the lousy union dominated public schools, skyrocketing crime rates and rampant homelessness and when Covid hit, CA’s super strict over the top restrictions sent families fleeing lockdowns, mandates and kids forced to do on line school long past other states. Any Phoenix area resident will tell you if the nightmare of being priced out of local housing by cash rich CA home sellers fleeing all of the above.

It's worth mentioning that California is unique geography is what kept it from being settled for hundreds of years. The Spanish tried from the 1500s until the 1700s. It was the mountain ranges and the oceans that kept people from truly settling there.

Even the best climate isn't worth the cost of living in California.

I wouldn’t want to live there either. Would I pay $7 a gallon for gasoline when it costs half as much literally anywhere else in the United States. Those are Europe prices. And I left there for many reasons that is one of them. And high taxes like California has. I don’t like California’s high crime rates either.

Californians have ruined Idaho and Arizona ... they earn a 6 figure retirement and move to States where housing "was" practical, and many retirees live on 1/6th of Californians income ... which they can no longer do, because the Californians cause prices to rise. I had to leave Prescott Az because Californians caused prices to triple. If I could relive my life ... I would struggle living in California for twenty years ... get a 6 figure retirement ... and live happy ever after by displacing people in States where the medium income is under $50K ... Oklahoma, Kentucky, West Virgina, New Mexico, Arkansas, etc ... and live like a King.

I left California and moved to Michigan in 1995. Main reasons were cost of living but what expedited the move was the earthquake in 1994. None of my friends believed I was leaving until I was gone. On a modest income my wife and I bought a house, raised a child and have a better quality of life here.

California's unique geographic and climatic features seem central to its success. Since 1850, its development has been extraordinarily fast, which has led to unsustainable mismanagement of its resources. This is interesting because under Spanish and Mexican governance development was essentially stagnant. The state will never again be the mid-twentieth century Shangri-La it supposedly was, but with better governance and an informed electorate it actually could be better than ever. Btw: people who leave California for other states all have their own reasons. No point in oversimplyfing that. And as all Americans benefit from the state's enormous success, let's hope most Americans want California to prosper in the future.

Ex-Californian speaking: cost of living, especially housing. After my wife's death, my property tax rose so much, I had a whole new appreciation for Proposition 13. At retirement, it was impossible to stay. And I loved California - the best years of my life.

I never wanted to leave California, I lived in the same zip code for 80% of my life and I loved it there. Part of the reason I left was high housing prices, I did not want to spend $1.5 million for a three bedroom house in a "decent" neighborhood. The final straw was the results of 20+ years of one party rule, the state is becoming a wasteland. I have never understood California voters, supposedly intelligent people who continually vote for a political system that leads to government control and the breakdown of society. It definitely got worse over the past 5 years though. I am just hoping that the Californians joining me in Arizona do not ruin this state also, it is teetering on the edge right now.

The important question about the people leaving California is how the people staying there feel about the people who leave.

I have believed only two primary reasons California is super expensive to live in: Population, and Hollywood's industries. Actors, film producers, and filmmakers do get paid a lot of money, and there are still branches of the film industry growing probably at a ridiculously fast rate, so cost of living may adjust only to the wealthy. Tourism would basically vanish. Also, California has a huge population, and so much land, thus it's hard to secure housing even in areas people want to move.

As a California to Portland refugee, I'd say that politics ruins the state. It's not democratic leadership but rather the fact that cities aren't built to be lived in. Every single inch of developed land is owned by raging violent capitalists that must achieve maximum profit at all times. If you're not paying a lot in rent you're not located in a popular area.

California's geography while great, is not the best for housing development. Large areas of the state are inhospitable for it such as the deserts of southern California and the mountainous regions to the east and north. Cities like San Francisco, LA and San Diego would inhabitable it were not for shady deals made in the 19th century that routed water from the Sierras and reservoirs to them. California also has some of the most inefficient and wasteful land use of any state in the country with suburban sprawl especially in LA and inland empire. This is the result of longstanding regulations and NIMBY-ism that suppressed more efficient land use by high density housing and mixed use zoning. People complain about it, but they are a part of the problem. Whenever a solution comes up to increase housing supply, the existing homeowners are the first to vote against any measures to deal with it. Aside from that, California is among the heavily taxed states and have one of the highest tax burdens borne by its residents. Its a state that is a victim of its success.

Even though that was before I was born, I have heard California was hyped across the country as the state to relocate to after WW 2 due to its climate and jobs. Apparently, that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

I lived in California for a year back in 2013, and though I loved it back then and it's a place with so much going for it, there's no way I'd want to live there today. It's mainly political - their incompetent government have absolutely ruined what should be paradise and turned it into a dystopian wasteland of crime, homelessness and hopelessness. It really makes me sad.

Good video. I have been asking this question for 25 years. In a nutshell the three main reasons on why people leave: taxes, cost of living, and politics. I thought a lot about moving to Southern California back about 21 years ago and it was the cost of living that really kept me from doing so. I also saw what I call the California boomerang where people would move away (in my case Reno, NV) only to go back home. Reno had the same issue (they moved away and then moved back to Reno) where I knew dozens of people who did this. California is really cool but you have to land on your feet. The majority of people I knew who lived in California bought their homes decades ago.

The population actually went up by 67,000 in 2023.

Both my wife and I are Native Californians. We met in Encinitas. I spent a career in Cal Fire protecting the citizens of California. Unfortunately, thanks to Newsome, it became unrecognizable compared to the California I grew up in. Leftist policies ruined the state. We didn’t want to raise our daughter there. I took an early ish retirement and we move to the Northern Rockies. It bums me out to say it but you couldn’t pay me enough to live there now. It’s really a sad thing to see

Lower income renters and struggling retirees are the ones leaving. Originally from the NE, lived 17 years in FL, due to work I've traveled to almost every state. CA is by far the best place I've lived and have visited. Beautiful weather, LOTS of high paying jobs, specially for professionals. You'll never run out of things to do. The state with the most safest larger cities in the country. CA has almost 40 million people, lots of people, lots of different people. The homelessness, majority from the midwest and NE, even they know CA is the state to be in. No tornadoes, no hurricanes, no shoveling snow, no humidity. It's expensive, need to pay to play....

It's expensive to live in a place that is highly desirable and cheap to live in a place that is not. There is no mystery. The sinister part is that the same type of people that made California expensive to live are exporting those dynamics all over the country for places not half as nice. Any escape will be temporary. It's a systemic issue, not a California one.
